We've only been on the southern part of this route recently, and it's
fine for travel. To connect SGRT and LART, we take Westminster St.
west from the SGRT. There is no bike path, but the road is wide and
fine for cycling. Go across Pacific Coast Highway and cross Naples
Island. Immediately west of Naples, turn left on Bayshore Blvd and
join the Long Beach Shoreline Bike Path along the beach. Follow the
signs to Shoreline Dr. and then to Queen's Way and to the LART. A
free map of these trails is available (Long Beach Bicycle Route
Map)--I think we got it from

Long Beach Parks, Recreation & Marine
2760 Studebaker Road

Happy cycling, Lee

I commute into work along the Coyote Creek.  Recently the Los Angeles Flood Control District (LAFCD) was tardy unlocking some of the gates.  I found that I got a prompt response when I used the "Report A Problem" link on the Los Angeles Public Works -- Water Services page (hyperlink provide below).

    Flood Control -> Report A Problem ...

If anyone has a phone number that is direct to the LAFCD, I would appreciate it if you could send it.

I rode from Santa Fe dam to PCH via SGRT on Sat 3/26 – we had no problems, a couple of underpasses have a small amount of water and mud so you may need to slow down a little.  The bike path is good to go.  A section of Rio Hondo was closed (flooded) earlier, the west side from the golf course to the main path.  It still may be closed; however you can exist at end and get to Santa Fe dam via the streets.

Greetings All---

Our bike club (Goodrich CyclePaths, Riverside, CA) is planning a
ride along the San Gabriel River Trail from the Santa Fe Dam area to
Long Beach and possibly looping back around along the LA River/Rio
Hondo Trails.  Tentative dates:  April 2 or 9.

With all of the recent rains, does anyone have any information on
path conditions for this route?  Should we keep these dates, or
postpone this ride out a couple of months?

Also, when we do this ride, what is the best connector route thru
Long Beach from the SGRT to the LART?

Thanks in advance for any input.

I don't think you will have any problems riding either the Rio Hondo or San Gabriel bike trails.  On 19 March I rode Tour de Sewer.  The ride went up the Rio Hondo and down the San Gabriel River.  I did not see significant issues; just beware of mud in some of the under crossings on the San Gabriel.

Hi all,

I'm happy to have just found the web site associated with this
group, but I'm new to the area and have no idea how to get to any of
the places listed.

Is there any way the path description pages could be updated to
include (a) Specific directions on how to get to a parking area, and
(b) Where the trail entrance is, relative to the parking?

I'd be glad to help flesh out the directions with some digital
photos, if that would be useful.

Also, has there been any talk about joining forces with other local
biking groups like CORBA? Seems like there are many separate
pockets of people who have part of the story / logistical
connections and volunteers, and if they all got together the result
could be a real powerhouse -- and possibly less of a maintenance
headache for the web sites and other resources.

Best,

-- Tom Guyette

For what its worth, I had a similar experience about a year ago (March 17th) when I was hit by a small pickup truck that blew a red light on Admiralty way in Marina Del Rey.  The truck hit me going about 35 mph. I shattered his windshield with my head/helmet (a life saver - no doubt.) Although I managed to "walk away" without any broken bones, I did undergo chiropractic and neck muscle therapy for about 6 months afterward. In addition, I had quite a few big, deep bruises and a number of significant contusions (as well as 6 hours of amnesia following the impact - not that I remember it  ;-)     ) Even a year later, my head and neck are still not quite back at %100.

If your friend needs any legal representation, I can suggest a lawyer that took care of everything for me. It was definitly a relief not to have to worry about dealing with the insurance companies and hospital over the financial bickering. In the end, he did manage to more than cover my out of pocket expenses for the whole ordeal.

I hope Paul makes a recovery at least as full and speedy as my own. Please extend my well-wishes to him.  There is a bike path at the end of this long road.

Cheers,

Jeff Croke

Hi Guys:

Just to let you know I rode from Encanto Park Duarte to Long Beach mostly on the LARIO bike last weekend.  The route was as follows:

Encanto Park to Santa Fe Dam via bike path

Exit Dam to Arrow Highway – Go East

Continue East on Live Oak

South on Peck Road

Enter RIO Hondo bike path at Peck / Mayflower.

Rio Hondo bike path clear to Whittier Narrows

Exit bike path on San Gabriel

West on Rosemead and take upper LARIO bike path

The east section LARIO bike path is closed just passed 105/710 interchange

Cross over to west side of the river bike path until end of bike path and cross back to east side of the river

The path finishes at Ferry Terminal in Long Beach.

Total round trip 80

Anyone know the status of San Gabriel River trail? When is it going to open etc.

From my experience, Sports Chalet has a better selection than
Sportmart. Sportmart's bike dept is not much better than an upgraded
Walmart bike dept. but neither store having much selection or higher
level gear, both too department store-ish. As for local bike shops,
they usually have what you're looking for but it depends on your
budget since most LBS' charge top dollar for their gear (and I have
run into some real snobby a-holes at some of those stores too, like
if you're not spending $1000 they could care less about you). I have
personally found the best deals and selection between Supergo,
Performance and Nashbar. Hard to beat some of the clearance deals on
components, apparel, and accessories these superstores offer. I can
understand the lack of personal attention that some of the hard core
bicyclists are refering at the superstores, but not all of us that
ride can afford the extra expense involved to get this service when
many of the same items can be purchased at the other stores for much
less. The bottom line, if you know what you want, buy it at the
superstores, if you don't, then you might just have to chase the
expensive advice and service of the more expensive LBS'.

It was kind of fun to ride on the streets of L.A., but it's a zoo.
All levels of riders. Don't expect to move very fast most of the
time. Some pretty bad potholes last time and probably worse now
after the rains.

The main drawback was having to go the day before to pick up the
numbers.

Still worth doing at least once, though.

Lots of fun early in the morning but very crowded for the first 5 miles. Watch the fast finish. You can get clipped on the last turns.

The Acura bike tour is a blast. This will be my third time. 15,000 people,
largest bike tour in the world. It's very festive; even at that hour people
line the streets and cheer you on. The streets are closed and it's a great
opportunity to experience the city. The route is pretty hilly from a
runner's point of view but pretty flat from a cyclist's. (runners don't
have gears)

Within reason, you can go as fast or as slow as you want. You do have to
pay a lot of attention to other cyclists, though. It is very crowded the
whole way, at least if you're going medium-slow like me. There is actually
one bottleneck toward the beginning where you have to walk your bike.

To get your bib and other stuff you have to go to the marathon expo a few
days before and go past all the vendors' booths.

There is a lot of traffic at the Exposition Boulevard exit of the Harbor
Fwy - go early and/or take another exit.

Afterward, there are activities at USC or you can walk over to Figueroa St.
and watch the runners go by.

Have fun!

YES! Thousands of people, most of whom don't know how or what to do in a
mass of people! Some of them have not even checked their tires for air (if
they know how). The ONLY way to do that ride is to be up front and stay
there no matter what you have to do!!

Just imagine 12,000 bikes all trying to get to the starting line and you
are in the back. I did it for several years.. staying in the front and
desided that it was not worth the potential injuries to my body.

I must say that the expo, which is for 3 days before the ride, is well
worth going to and it FREE, whether you are a participant or not.

I have done it twice.  Riding with 15,000 other riders is a real experience.  My primary advise is to be careful and ride very defensively.  Many of the people doing this ride are inexperienced and may do unexpected things, like fall in front of you for no apparent reason.  Also, there will be roller bladers who really interrupt the flow of bicyclists.  In my opinion the roll bladers pose a real danger and should not be allowed.

It is a fun to ride through the streets of LA and not have to stop for lights or stop signs.  And some people come out and cheer you on as if you are in a race so it can be a real fun time so it can be real fun.

You can get free registration and t-shirt for the ride if you volunteer to work at the Expo the week before the event.  Check out the Marathon website.

Be careful and have fun,

Larry

The gates at Ballona Creek are always locked when there is a threat of rain
or a danger to people climbing into the creek (not that the gates stop
them). I is never clear who is responsible for the gates because they cross
into mank cities (which all have keys) and the creek, I think, is County of
LA.

You can call the Culver City Park Dept and ask them, they DO have keyts to
their gates.

Dear Larry,

Yes the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works locks the gates during storm events to protect people from the swift water. The County has been quite busy with storm clean-up projects and is probably just overwhelmed with projects. I am cc’ing the folks at the County that will be able to help take care of re-opening the bike path. Thanks for the alert!

I finally found an open gate and got on the path between Sawtelle and the 405.

Does anyone have any information on the closure?  I assume it may have been something to do with the storms.

Billy,

I'd go with a LBS.
Specifically, I'd go with Incycle because of how they have treated me or helped me in the past.

Doesnt hurt that they sponsor a club or two I belong to either ;)

Good luck,
Patrick
