The following page contains links to the Santa Clarita trails map:
http://www.santa-clarita.com/cityhall/parks/trails/trailsmap.asp
Note that last year there was construction along Soledad Canyon road
that cut off the west end of the system from the east end. Also note
that the trail was washed out part way up Francisquito Creek. So it's
not a huge trail system like the San Gabriel/Rio Hondo, but it's fun to
explore. The pavement is generally new and the area pleasant enough.
However, I wouldn't try it in the summer since it's really, really hot then.
Santa Barbara on the other hand is really great in the Summer. The
following is a gateway page to their online maps:
http://www.trafficsolutions.info/Bicycling/bike.html
However, I would suggest you order a free map which they will happily
send you as the online maps are of poor resolution. The longest class I
ride starts on the UCSB campus and is very nice but not very long
either. There is another Class I section along the beachfront which
tends to be crowded with pedestrians but is otherwise pleasant.
Fortunantly, the Class II bike lanes in SB are generally not too bad and
I feel relatively safe riding them on my trike. I[ve done a loop from
the beach to UCSB and back and survived quite nicely.
Also, I've done a ride from Ventura to Carpenteria and back. You can
start from Ventura beach and travel along a short class I section. The
class II bike lane then parellels the 101 and the railroad along a
secondary road that people use for beach access. It's wide but a litte
rough and you have to watch yourself a bit around the parked RVs but
it's not that bad. For one section the bike lane actually is up on the
101, so there you are huffing along at 15 to 20mph while people are
whizzing by at 80. It's a little odd but you are well out of the way so
it's OK.
I can't believe I left out one of my favorite places to go triking:
Irvine! This city in Orange County has one of the best trail systems and
it's close enough to the ocean that it's tolerable in the Summer. This
is a map:
http://www.cityofirvine.org/depts/pw/projdev/city_of_irvine_bikeways.asp
Highly recommended for triking if you ever get down that way.
Have fun and see you on the trails!
