Subject: maintenance on LA River bike path
I'm writing to call your attention to some maintenance practices
along the LA River Bikeway on Wednesday of this week--practices which
caused major inconvenience to a group ride I was part of, and could
have caused danger.
We started at Grant Rea Park in Montebello, and rode round-trip to
Long Beach--a round-trip of about 40 miles. We noticed at several
points along the way maintenance crews were trimming away foliage,
grass and other growth along the path. A great deal of debris was
scattered along the bike path--so much so that at several places
there was nothing to be done but ride on through it. On the way back
from Long Beach, we noted that much of the debris remained on the
trail, even in places where the crews had finished their work and left.
We began to experience flat tires. By the time the ride ended, all
but one of us had either flatted out or was struggling with leaks.
We stopped several times and removed thorns, goatheads, and other
debris stuck in our tires, but to no avail. One rider experience
three flat tires in less than 12 miles!
If one of these many flats had been a front tire blowout, the
results, on a narrow path, could have been quite serious.
It's important to note that we are all veteran cyclists, with well-
maintained bikes and tires and tubes in top condition.
Thanks very much for your attention.
Bernard M. Weinraub
