RE: [bikepaths] Newbie questions...

Hi, Just read your post to the bike paths groups, and I can possibly help with the lower part of your route.

If you can get onto the LA river path that is a good way to start, I would the get onto Riverside at about Fletcher. Riverside will turn into Figuerroa as it crosses over the LA River. Instead of going strait, hang a left onto San Fernando / 19th Ave. and take that up to Pasadena Ave. Turn Right on Pas. Ave. and then Left onto Broadway (and over the LA River again). This will take you through China Town, and hen on into downtown.

I am sure there would be a way over Stadium way, but I have not worked hard on finding it, and use the above if I need to get to Burbank (though I would normally take a route through Griffith Park rather  than the river path.

For the bike, if you intend to ride this a lot, get the best you can afford! When I ride a 'normal' bike I either ride a mountain bike (though with no suspension) or a "cross bike" basically a strong road bike but with flat mountain style bars, rapid-fire shifters, and disk brakes. As I also carry cloths and work stuff I have a rack and panniers which weighs the whole thing down a bit.

Good luck
Andrew

Subject: [bikepaths] Newbie questions...

Hi everyone,

I just joined the group and have a few newbie questions.

1. Is there a FAQ that sums up questions asked on this list?  (I
couldn't find one on the site and the link in the introductory email
goes to a broken page)

2. I am thinking of making a jump to bicycle commuting, although my
route will be rather challenging, I think.  I ought to be physically
up to it though (I run marathons)... but we'll see.  :D  Any general
advice?

3. I need to purchase a new bicycle for commuting - any
recommendations?  I only have a beach cruiser and that just ain't
gonna cut it, I know.  :)  My budget is roughly $100-300.  I'm 6'0"
if that matters.

4. The route I am considering riding is from northwest Burbank to
downtown L.A. and back.  This means, I think, either finding a bike
route along the 5 Fwy / L.A. River, or riding to the red line metro
station and (if it's possible?) taking my bike with me that way.

I would *very* much appreciate any advice on the above topics.  I've
been reading up a bit and I have some rough ideas of how to make
this work, but I'd really like to ditch the car for my daily commute
and see how that works out.  Can I do 15 miles each way per day?  I
think so.  I'm willing to give it a shot.

15 miles a day should be no problem...but not on a beach cruiser! But, don't buy a cheap dept store bike...it would be a waste of $300.. However, you can...

2. Being a marathon runner, you should have no problem biking. Try it one day per week and work your way up. 3. I bought a "cheap" racing back. It was around...

I'd suggest used too - it would be hard to find a road bike for under $300 new. I switched from a hybrid to a road bike recently and found that I had to spend...
