I go down Cochran, to Venice, and at some point, around Jefferson, go onto
the Ballona Creek river path. I'm not exactly sure where you're trying to
get to, but Venice Blvd. has a bike lane. I rode it a few weeks ago, and
much to my surprise, the bike lane made me feel safer. I've read stories
about the bike lane being a false sense of security (I'm guessing that if we
feel too safe, we aren't super aware, like when riding in heavy traffic),
but I know that with all that extra room to ride, it will be much harder to
get hit by a car. Hope this helps.
