I think you are referring to the gates West of Overland Blvd in Culver
City. I think they installed them to herd the kids that use the
pedestrian bridge there. They close them during storms so the kids can
use the bridge but are discouraged from walking along the bike path
when the water is high. I make it a point to never ride the path there
when the middle school lets out at 2:20 pm. The boys at that age seem
to need to prove themselves by harassing the bicyclists as they pass.
Plus they are not looking and don't expect anyone to be riding through.
