I often ride Ballona Creek, and have never had any problems. That said, it is not a bad idea to carry a spare tube and cell phone, to have a riding buddy, and leave the mp3 player at home. Tempt not the kiddies.
Avoid beach bikeways during the summer - they're jammed full of rollerbladers, clueless pedestrians, and incompetent rent-a-cyclists. The first two categories are evidently incapable of reading "bikes only" signs. I have heard of cyclists ticketed for not walking bikes where required, but if "bikes only" signs are enforced, I've never heard of it. Our police are missing a huge revenue source, there are thousands of offenders on any weekend.

I ride the Rio Hondo path every Saturday and I never encountered any
problems. There are many bike riders that take this path so I think
it keeps the danger away.
