fyi, Nick Peterrson and other Onion River Nordic Club folks will be giving a free skate ski clinic to Mambans this Sat. at 1pm at U32. Hope to see you there, and please consider supporting ORSC and becoming a member.
Cheers,
Brad
ps Onion River Sports is dumping all winter gear and apparel, some great deals to be had down there on equipment.
We don't care how much and what
consistency, snow is snow and there's decent skiing to be had with good reports
coming in from U-32. All of our programming will be taking place through the end
of the week.
Thursday noontime clinic will be led by Dan Voisin at 12 pm
at U-32. This will be a skate technique session aimed at beginner to
intermediate skaters looking to get some "professional help" with
their skills.
Saturday Youth Program will begin this Saturday at
U-32. Meet at 10 am for some fun in the snow. Club membership is encouraged for
all participants, and if your kids are planning on attending consistently there
is an additional $20 Bill Koc League membership required for insurance
purposes. Feel free to bring sleds, skis, snacks, hot chocolate or anything
else you think would make for an enjoyable 2 hours in the snow (oh, you can
bring your kids too!)
Local Sports Clubs Unite! With the good skating
conditions at U-32 we will be holding the postponed clinc at 1 pm this
Saturday. This is an open invitation for all members of MAMBA, CVR and GMM to
come out and get some free hands-on technique coaching from a few of our
charter club members. If you know anyone who fits into this category please
spread the word as we should be able to handle 20+ skiers.
Sprint Races
should be a go next Tuesday. More info to come.
Ok, that's it. No time to
write when there's skiing to be had.
Hi All - I'd just like to comment on Chrissy's spinning note. As someone who
has never done weightrooms or fitness centers, I was suprised at how fun indoor
spinning is. It's not boring, and it's a really good simulation of an outdoor
ride. I'm not a member, so I buy a punch card for the class. For several years
now, I've found spinning to be a nice complement to the outdoor things I do in
winter. You may enjoy it too.

Hi Mambans,
The long awaited Mamba/ORS bike lids are in, I had hoped to have them
by the Mamba party, but placed my order too late. They are a sporty
"Euro" design, black with red/green stripe down middle, Mamba logo
off one ear, ORS logo off the other ear. Thanks to Ryan/Tom at ORS, we
can sell them at an affordable rate, $15. Let me know if you want one,
they'll make great Xmas gifts. I have 25 in stock, and can order more.

Can anyone help build trail off of Upper Horn of Moon Rd Sat. 11/4, from 1-4pm. We have almost 2/3 of a trail connecting Jacobs over to HOM done, and we need a bunch of rakers/benchcutters to hopefully finish the job. Even with all the precip, it's been mostly dry and will be an early/late season trail to ride, so come on out. Meet at S turn on upper HOM rd, before North St intercepts HOM rd, near where VAST trial crosses HOM.
Cheers,
Brad
ps we have most tools, bring a sturdy rake if you can. Tools will be in the back of Chuck's truck if you arrive late and need one, it is about a 10min. walk into where we will be working, just follow existing trail that has been raked to find us. Wear bright colors, youth hunting in progress.
The Ecotour is back and is scheduled for Sunday, June 24, 2007.
We are fortunate to have the services of Maureen McIntyre, a Vista volunteer assigned to the Youth Services Bureau. Maureen will be organizing the event.
We are looking for some creative suggestions for a name that better reflects the purpose of the ride (to benefit the Washington County Youth Service Bureau and Russian youth). Here are some of the names submitted by Jen and Pavel Cherkasov, the creators of the original Ecotour:
Hope Tour
Tour d'Esprit
Speranza Tour
Humanitour
Do you like any of these? If not, put your creative energy to work and help us come up with a name that is suitable for this venerable event!
It's time to celebrate and reward our members for all the hard work they put into building new trail and maintaining the old favorites around Central Vt. To that end, the Mamba board announces the Mamba Tour 2006, to be held Sat. 9/30, rain date Sun. 10/1.
Schedule of Events:
730-8am- Meet at ORS parking lot for coffee, pre-ride preparation. Please park in another place besides ORS lot.
8-10am- first leg of Tour. From ORS to Hill St., over to Irish Hill single/doubletrack, back to ORS. Mod. to advanced in terms of fitness/technical trail.
10-11am- Refresh/regroup
11-1pm- second leg of Tour. Leave ORS to new North Branch trail off Cummings St. Climb up to Sparrow Farm trail, over to Horn of Moon Rd, into E. Montpelier Town
Forest, back down Sparrow to North Branch, back to ORS. Moderate single/doubletrack with a couple of long climbs.
1-2pm- Refresh/regroup at Watson's house, 513 Towne Hill Rd, Montpelier.(1/2 mile up from old NECI school).
2-4pm- third leg of Tour. Leave Watson's, head over to Dodge rd, pick up EMTI trail over to Center Rd, back to Morse Farm. Moderate fitness and technical loop, Morse Farm is a great place for younger kids to join the fun.
5pm- PARTY at Watson's(Mamba will provide beverage/grillables, please bring dish to share).
We do hope you'll plan on joining us for any part of this fun day, we will try and provide more than one leader should we have different ability levels on each leg. The Tour is for Mamba members only, but if you know of someone who would like to join the fun, we would welcome them
becoming a member that day, and will have membership forms available.
To help Ryan and the guys prep for this event, we need people to help with the course. Lauri Sharf has generously donated time mowing the field portions of the course with his sickle bar mower. What we need are a few people to go out and rake the grass cuttings from the course. If interested, please email me at dvoisin@... so I can point you to the right areas of the course. Their will not be a formal work day for this, so go out whenever you want!

Hello Brad,
Could I trouble you to forwar this to the MAMBA list? These two attachments
are wordy, but essentially Pierre Couture (the fella who's trying to make a
go at Millstone Hill) is trying to raise awareness of the Central Vermont
Rec. Path.
He's hoping that the Montplilier contingent can create a friendly 'critical
mass' of riders on the morning of Sep. 9th.
read on..
WIth your help .... and a large group of Norwich students we are hoping to do the bulk of the remaining finish work on the mountain bike path.
A key need for help this coming Saturday is for transportation. For each person you can transport we will gain almost 5 hours of work on the trail.
If you can transport 5 people we will gain almost 25 hours worth of trail work.......
So if any of you would like to "leverage" your effort this is a good time!!!
Even if you can't work at all.... just the transportation would be a huge help!!!!!!!
Transporter Needs:
be at Norwich University (Northfield) by 12:30 and prepared to transport back at around 4:30, on Sat August 26th.....
Please let me know as soon as possible if you can help!!!
Thanks,
Geoff
For those willing to lead students in work groups the tasks listed below are on the agenda. Please let me know ahead of time what you would like to do or lead so we can plan accordingly.

Install culverts 8 2 groups of 4
Roll stumps further out of sight 6 2 groups of 3
(stumps have been already removed)
Spread gravel on slippery sections 8 2 groups of 4
Tool needs:
Sturdy wheelbarrows
Shovels
Rakes
A couple picks
Iron bars
If you can lend or bring any please make sure they are easily identifiable as yours!
If you don't have time Saturday but have time before then there is also some important preparation task.....
Also please pass this along to people who you know might be able to help!
Hello Folks, After an extremely busy July and early August, the North Branch Trail is nearing completion. It's amazing to think that a little over two month ago, mountain bikers had no legitimate way to ride on trails from Town to the East Montpelier Trail network. Thanks to some extrodinary efforts by Geoff Beyer, Montpelier Parks Commission, Americorps, many volunteers and, recently, a candidate for lietenant governer of Vermont, there are now 15 new bridges and over two miles of new trail.
HOWEVER, the trail needs some final touches to make it safe and rideable. As of today, the punch list includes: 1) Construction of ramps on either side of the bridges 2) Positioning of a half dozen or so culverts. 3) Armoring existing culverts and inproving drainage 4) Feathering the tread 5) Moving brush out of sight
On Saturday, August 26 at 1:00, there will be a MONSTER of a work day until late afternoon. Geoff has wrangled another
day of volunteer work from the Norwich Cadets. We expect to have around 50 volunteers from Norwich (although this number could grow depending on availability of transportation, see below). We will be breaking this number down into manageable groups of 4 to 8 people and assign specific tasks. What we need are: 1) DRIVERS!!! to pick up Cadets and to drop them off afterwards. PLEASE email me or Geoof (geoffbeyer@...) if you can drive. For every cadet we can get to the trail, there is five hours of additional volunteer labor! 2) leaders for the crews. Please do not be scared off. If you have ever been on a MAMBA work day, you qualify. Contact me if you are interested in leading a crew. 3) VOLUNTEERS. The list may seem short, but there is a lot of work to do. Many hands make for light work! Email me if you can come for ay part of the day so that I can plan accordingly (aka buy enough
beer).
Hi MAMBA,
Another exiting race at Morse Farm last night, with Bliss Racing of
Chittendon County bringing some excellent riders. Photos and results
are posted at http://bikemamba.org/albums/2005_morse_5/. I've finally
gotten photos up from a week ago, at
http://bikemamba.org/albums/2005_morse_4/.
Please come out and help with trail work at Morse Farm next MONDAY,
July 18th at 5:30pm (fine to arrive late if you can't make the start).
We'll be continuing the work we began last Sunday. We really need
lots of people to get this project finished in time for late-Summer /
Fall riding. See http://bikemamba.org/trailwork.php for more info.
Also note that the work day scheduled for July 30th has been moved to
July 31st.
Finally, we'd like to announce the 1st annual "Tour de MAMBA" to be
held on Saturday, August 27th (rain date Aug 28th). We'll be doing a
series of rides on local singletrack, including East Montpelier
Trails, Irish Hill, Morse Farm, and some new stuff that we're cutting
in July/August. We'll announce the start location/time of each ride,
so folks can join for as much or as little as they want (great tune-up
for the VT 50). The day will wrap up with a cookout at Brad Watson's
house, beer provided by MAMBA. This will be a celebration of what
MAMBA has accomplished thus far and a big "Thank You" to members and
volunteers. Open to current MAMBA members only, so get your 2005 dues
in soon if you haven't yet...
Cheers,
Jase
Hi MAMBA,
Thanks a ton to those who came out and helped at Morse Farm today:
Steve, the Ward family, Dan, Ryan, Rick H., Rick E., Kip, and Jen. I
also neglected earlier to send a particular thanks to Chuck Eldred,
who donated, prepped, and delivered a couple hundred dollars worth of
bridge decking. We also need to thank Burr for his help with
tractor-powered truck extraction after a bit of a mud incident...
We got some great work done today, shown briefly at
http://bikemamba.org/albums/2005_morse_work_july/ . This whole
project is a tremendous undertaking (by far MAMBA's biggest yet), and
I'm very happy with what we accomplished today with a fairly limited
number of volunteers.
It will take us at least three more big days this Summer/Fall to
complete the "large loop" at Morse Farm, which then greatly opens up
our riding options. Can folks offer suggestions as to how we can get
more riders out at these and other events? We did great work today,
but we needed another 6-8 people to reach our initial goal. I know a
number of our regulars were away today at a pre-scheduled event, so no
worries there. Are there ways we can make these work days easier or
more attractive for folks to attend? Please pass on any thoughts you
might have. The next four scheduled events are listed on
http://bikemamba.org/trailwork.php, some weekend, some weeknights.
We're working hard to improve biking in the area, but we need help!
Finally, I'm thinking of running a mountain biking mini day camp for
kids & pre-teens at Morse Farm later this summer. MAMBA parents,
please give me some feedback as to whether there's interest, what
dates might work well (before school's back, obviously), and what sort
of format would work (2-day weekend event, or several weekdays)? I'd
plan to cover riding skills, basic maintenance, and of course a bit of
trailwork (gotta start them young!). Anything else? Any comments
would be much appreciated.
Again, thanks so much to those who came out today. We can all feel
great about what we accomplished!
...And don't forget the next race at Morse Farm Tuesday night. The
course should be dry and *fast* this week...
Cheers,
Jase
Hi All,
The sun's shining, temperature's great, scones just came out of the
oven, and all's looking good for today's work day at Morse Farm. I'll
be there by 8:30 if you feel like getting a little bit of an early
start. If you can make it out any time between 9am and 1pm (earlier
better, of course), that's great. If not, please add a future date to
your calendar:
SATURDAY July 30th, 9 AM - 1 PM
WEDNESDAY August 10th, 5:30-8 PM
SATURDAY August 20th, 9 AM - 1 PM
See http://bikemamba.org/trailwork.php for full details.
Finally, thanks in advance to a few people whose extrordinary efforts
are key in pulling today off: Steve Bolduc and Nick Ward for fetching
gravel, Brad and the camp crew for loading, Dan Voisin for planning
help, and of course Burr Morse for giving us a venue! Thanks much to all.
Cheers,
Jase
Hi MAMBA,
Here's your final reminder that we're meeting at 9:00am TOMORROW,
SUNDAY THE 11th at Morse Farm. We'll go rain or shine, though it
looks like the weather will clear up fairly well by tomorrow. We
have a really big day planned, with two loads of gravel and a load
of lumber being delivered to the work site. We need lots of hands
to turn all this raw material into trail! This will *greatly*
expand our FREE riding options at Morse Farm.
This is MAMBA's most ambitious work day yet, so please come out and
help us make it a success!
Tools we need if you have them: wheelbarrows (especially), 5-gallon
pails, shovels, hammers, axes, come-alongs, and chains (for moving
logs).
Bog bridges, by definition, go through wet areas, so please bring
muck boots if you have them (otherwise you can work on stuff where
your feet will stay dry). For your own comfort, please bring bug
repellent, sunscreen, rain gear, and work gloves. I'll provide
coffee and fresh-baked scones for breakfast.
If you need directions to Morse Farm, you can find them at
http://www.morsefarm.com/neDirect.tmpl. If you have any questions,
you can call me at 802.272.6406 (I'll get messages Saturday evening).
See you SUNDAY!
-Jase
Hi All,
Reminder that we really need your help THIS SUNDAY the 11th at Morse Farm at
9am. We're doing some major bog-bridges in the far low area so that we'll have
good access to the singletrack in the sugarbush. We need a lot of hands to pull
this off.
There's a few tools we could definitely use if you have them: wheelbarrows,
5-gallon pails, hammers, shovels, axes, come-alongs, and chains (for moving
logs).
We'll meet at 9am in the Morse Farm parking lot and plan on working until about
1pm. Don't forget work gloves, sunscreen, and bug spray. I'll arrange for
coffee and fresh-baked cranberry scones to fuel our
work.
See you Sunday!
-Jase
I am forwarding, hot off the press, a new trail map of the Irish Hill trail project on Berlin/Montpelier forest on the backside of Berlin Pond. We have worked hard in gaining approval to build a non-motorized, primarily mountain bike friendly trail system, with an eye towards expanding the trails onto Laffal land(see map) and Boyer State Forest(approval pending). At present, the loops on the map offer approximately 45 mins of moderate/advanced singletrack which will only get better with riders breaking in the route. With expansion onto Laffal land in the next 2 months(stay tuned for work party notices), we will be able to offer you all a good hour or two of sweet singletrack. The Conservation Boards of both towns will be monitoring the trail system, making sure there are no obvious signs of erosion or other problems which could effect water quality downstream(this is Montpelier's watershed area), so please stay on designated trails and tread
lightly(or just get off your bike) when wet/muddy areas are present. The goal is sustainability, with an eye towards trail expansion(Berlin has more land available), if we do things right. As the conservation folks have stated, we would like bikers to treat this as a conserved area first, recreation area second, so thanks for doing your part to preserve our right to ride Irish Hill. We will be placing both a trail map and trail open/closed signs at a kiosk at the parking lot in the near future, and will have a limited number of trail markers at entrance points/intersections soon. For now, one loop is marked sporadically with pink ribbon, the other with yellow ribbon. Hope you all are able to get out soon and ride it, once you complete the loop, adding on the ATV/logging road to the tower makes for a couple of hours of riding. Have fun.
Cheers,

Brad,
Here's a first cut at a trail map. I may have missed a few of the connector trails but I think I got most of it. I can easily add new loops once they are marked out on the ground. Let me know what you think. We should probably get the OK from City Council before you put up the trail markers- I can present the design to them along with a draft map at one of their meetings in July. I'll forward a copy of the design to City Manager Bill Fraser and see if he wants me to make a presentation. I don't think they will have any problem with it, or the trail locations, but I want to keep them in the loop. I'll leave it up to Andrea about how public this map should be. At this point it sounds like we don't want to post it on the web. Andrea, feel free to use the map for your presentation to the Selectboard.

Thanks Kris, will do some more flagging on Laffals, then get you up there for a walk, sometime in July. We worked all Sat. am raking/pruning/clearing the Berlin Loop, hoping we wont have any problems with Andrea's group, it really is an ideal area for trail, good drainage, not to steep etcc. We also re-routed that steep switchback descent on Laffal's land at the end of the Montpelier loop, should be much better riding and less erosion issues. Have a nice vacation, see you around.

Hi Kris,
Thanks again for coming out at the last minute to hike around with Andrea, am forwarding the Mamba trail marker design for your opinion. Another question, do you want to be involved with surveying our next loop on Paul Laffal's land, seeing as it most likely will fall into conservation interests at some point. Thanks a bunch for volunteering the GPS help, it will be neat to have a map of the trail system when it's done.
Have a nice wkend,
Brad

Hi MAMBA,
Another reminder that we really need your help this coming Sunday,
July 10th at 9am. We're doing a lot of work in a low area at Morse
Farm that restricts a connection to our singletrack in the sugar bush
near the road. This isn't just for races -- this connection will help
make Morse Farm a great place for everyday riding. There's a lot of
work to be done, but a big crew will make it go quickly. See
http://bikemamba.org/trailwork.php for the schedule of all remaining
work days this summer.
The results from last night are posted on ORS's website at
http://tinyurl.com/dkuxd . Photos and results from a week ago are up
at http://bikemamba.org/albums/2005_morse_3/ . Photos from last night
will be up soon.
Thanks and see you Sunday!

Hi MAMBA,
Don't forget the third ORS / MAMBA race at Morse Farm is tonight.
There are some good rivalries going already this season. We got some
great press in Saturday's Times Argus: http://bikemamba.org/press.php
. The views for spectators are great even if you choose not to race.
Please come out this coming SUNDAY, JULY 10th 9AM TO 1PM for trail
work at Morse Farm. We have a big day planned, doing bog bridges and
"gravel boxes" in the wet area where Brad built a temporary pallet
bridge last year. This work will provide good access to the
singletrack out in the far sugarbush, greatly expanding our available
riding. Please bring: shovels, 5-gallon pails, wheelbarrow if you
have one, gloves, sunscreen, mosquito repellent. I'll again provide
the coffee and scones to kick off the morning. Bring your bike for a
post-work ride.
All upcoming work days are posted on
http://bikemamba.org/trailwork.php -- please add to your calendar. We
NEED your help at these events!
Also... for anyone who saw the blurb in the paper about my bike being
stolen (4 of you already wrote me): it was my "townie" bike that I
left unlocked next to my car at Wrightsville while I paddled. A
bummer, but no great loss. Thanks for your concern, and keep those
bikes locked!
Cheers,
Jase
Hi MAMBA,
Results from Tuesday's race at Morse Farm have been posted on Onion
River's site: http://tinyurl.com/9s6lk . Photos will be posted within
a day or two. Congratulations to all who raced!
We need your help at summer work days! Please come out and join us as
we work to improve the local riding opportunities. No trail work
experience needed, just a good attitude and a willingness to learn. A
couple of big projects this summer will be pretty impressive
accomplishments. Check the schedule at
http://bikemamba.org/trailwork.php. The next scheduled day is Sunday,
July 10th to do some serious bog bridges at Morse Farm.
Happy riding,
Jase

Hi MAMBA,
TRAIL WORK TONIGHT
Reminder that we're meeting TONIGHT, Wednesday the 29th at 5:30 pm at
Morse Farm to do a bit of work to improve trails for racing and
everyday riding. If you can't join until 6 or 6:30, no problem. The
plan is to improve the "Take 2" singletrack that we cut on MAMBA's
first ever workday last year.
Please come out and help if possible. I know I haven't advertised
this one well, so sorry if this is the first you've seen of it. The
rest of the work dates for the summer are posted at
http://bikemamba.org/trailwork.php. Please add them to your calendar.
Bring any favorite trail tools, especially a shovel. Bug repellent
would also be a wise choice.
MORSE FARM RACES
We had another great race at Morse Farm last night. Results and
photos will be up soon. If you haven't tried racing yet, please
consider coming out next Tuesday. Kids race starts at 6:00, adult
race at 6:30pm. Keep spreading the word about the races -- more
competition will only make it better.
RIDING AT MORSE
Burr reiterated last night that he enjoys seeing mountain bikers using
the trails at Morse. Feel welcome to come out and ride for FREE
anytime. The smoothest riding will be on the racecourse (starts up
near Burr's driveway at the very top of the drive circle), but you're
welcome to try any other ski trails that are ridable. We'll be
working on expanding the bike network throughout the summer.
Cheers,
Jase
Hi MAMbA,
Thanks a ton to those who came out for the first Morse Farm race of
the summer. The course was a bit soggy/slow, but seemed to work out
alright. Photos and a link to results are posted at
http://bikemamba.org/albums/2005_morse_2/.
Morse Farm remains open to FREE riding any time. For those of you who
haven't been out, the race loop begins up above the buildings by the
entrance to the Maple Trail. It's very non-technical, so would make a
great place to bring kids or anyone new to mountain biking.
Knowing that many of you need long advance notice for trail work days,
we've posted the schedule for now through the end of August. Please
add a couple days to your calendar now. We've tried to include a
number of different days of the week to work around folks' particular
schedule conflicts. Next scheduled day is the evening of WEDNESDAY,
JUNE 29th.
http://bikemamba.org/trailwork.php
Finally, don't forget the Eco Tour coming up THIS SUNDAY!

Cheers,
Jase
Hi All,
The MTB race tonight at Morse Farm has been cancelled due to weather
(Duh). We'll ordinarily hold the race if it's a little wet, but this
constant downpour is would turn the course to mud soup.
Hope we'll see you next Tuesday!
Cheers,
Jase
Thanks Jase for the updates, I would request that noone ride the new stuff on Irish Hill until it is formally approved by Berlin Conservation folks in the next two weeks. It also is being GPS mapped by Kris Hammer(Vermont Land Trust/Montpelier Conservation Committee), which will be made available to Mambans. We will be putting in another loop in July/August on Irish Hill, connecting to Paul Laffal's land. We will keep you posted as to when a work crew will be needed, but by summer's end, should have enuf singletrack laid in to keep most folks happy for awhile. Thanks to all Mambans who have helped out to date, the amount of LEGAL trail riding will continue to grow with your support.
Cheers,

Hi MAMBA,
The 2005 racing season at Morse Farm begins tomorrow, Tuesday the 14th. We've done quite a bit of work on the course and it should ride even better this year (including a ripping new downhill into the meadow). Registration is from 5:00-5:45pm, kids race at 6, adult race immediately following. Entry fee is only $8/adult ($6/MAMBA), $5/teen, $4/kids, with categories for anyone from first-time racers to seasoned experts. Be sure to invite your moutain biking friends. Spectators are very welcome -- there are several excellent vantage points in the meadow and nearby in the woods. See you there!
Thanks a ton to those who came out and helped this weekend at Irish Hill (Brad, John, Tim, Kate, Andre, Eric P) and Morse Farm (Ryan, Andre, Ben, and me). I hear Irish Hill is looking great!
Finally,
don't forget to add Eco Tour to your calendar. It's coming up Sunday, June 26th. See http://www.athletesfornewideas.org/ for complete details.
Cheers, Jase

Hi MAMBA,
To those of you who race at Morse Farm (starts NEXT Tuesday), Ryan and
I could use some last-minute help this Sunday, June 12th, to finish
buffing out the course. We'll meet at 10am at the Morse Farm parking
lot. Join us for as much or as little as you want. As an extra
incentive for giving up your time at the last minute, we'll offer free
race registration on Tuesday for anyone who helps out this weekend.
If you come, please bring a shovel, any Mattock or grub hoe you might
have, gloves, water, sunscreen, and bug repellent. A wheelbarrow and
5-gallon pails would be great, too. Depending on how many show up,
we'll work on smoothing some of the singletrack in the woods and maybe
adding a berm or two in the field. We've made some changes that will
definitely make the course even more fun this year.
If you can't come Sunday but want to help on Saturday, talk to Brad
Watson (rbradwatson@...). He might be heading an informal crew
at Irish Hill or Morse on Saturday morning.
As an aside, we know that many of you need several weeks advance
notice to be able to plan work days. We're lining up our priorities
and will develop a work schedule for the rest of the summer within the
next week or so.
Cheers,
Jase
