The Four Immeasurables
[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Sorry about the delay, I meant to post this earlier in the week but
it slipped my mind.
Just back from the North American Hand Built Bicycle Show in Indy.
Talked to the people making and selling Kretiler rollers. Heard the
story about Al's first set of rollers. He made them from the
cardboard tubes that newsprint was supplied to a newspaper on.
The final race will be March 1st in Cedar Falls.
State Championships medals will be awarded to the top 3 in each
category.
Riders need 3 or more races to qualify.
the drawing for the grand prize of a new set of rollers will be
held. Riders need to enter 4 of the 7 races to qualify.

With just one event left in the "preseason" if you will, and just before the
Des Moines gravel races start the outdoor season proper next weekend, this
seems like proper time to start abusing people.
So Jack Piper, this is your call out!
pickle, i KNOW you're generally correct about such matters, so much so that
you have long been my reference guide for questions of the bike, but i fear
you've gone astray here.
the jack piper that i know has long ago hung up his cleats, and no lo
nger seriously rides a bicycle, much like another historical cycling footnote
with burlington connections, lowell kellogg.
ah, yes, such fond memories they evoke, but i think they'd both be the
first to tell you that they haven't "turned a peddle in anger" for YEARS.
maybe even decades.
hell, if i thought there was a SERIOUS chance that piper would actually
show up to do a roller exhibition, i'd be there snell-equipped.
but the jack i know would never do such a thing. i'm as confident about
THAT as i've ever been.
but it WAS a pleasant ride down memory lane, wasn't it, gee?

Forgive me, I tried to respond publicly since that's where the
question was posed, and apparently I did something wrong. Trying again....
I'm sorry if I didn't make this clear before, but I was suggesting
that you add a comment at the end of the Chicago Tribune story to help
educate the general public (i.e., people who don't read the messages
posted here).
My thoughts?
1. Encouraging defeat of the legislation is a really bad idea. Among
other things, it would reinforce the notion that bicyclists don't
belong on the roads. I think motorists who believe that are less
inclined to pass safely.
2. The law will make it easier for even "spineless" prosecutors to
press charges and make them stick.
3. The comment about riding the trails more and spending less time
talking about them was a cheap shot (for lack of a better term). The
IBC folks are doing a good, professional job.
Thanks for asking.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
despite repeated assurances that debate had been re-set for monday at 100
pm, the iowa senate voted 30-17 to approve the so-called cyclist's bill of
rights, sending it to the house, where it faces an "uncertain future."
all this means is that (1) no one really knows what is going to happen
on any given day up on the hill, and (2) you STILL have a chance to affect
this bill's future.
my personal feelings notwithstanding, you should contact your legislator
and help educate these poor, lost souls.
on this score, even our strongest supporters are left pushing for a bill
that they did not draft, and admit that it is at best a first step.
but which direction are they leading us? they need to understand that
we don't NEED more trails. jeezuz! who's in charge here?
maybe the best thing to do is kill this bill, and then come up with some
legislation that won't have to be re-visited next year, and the year after.

Last year, we had a meeting with the Attorney Generals staff why
additional charges weren't applied to bicycle crashes. They pointed
us to 321.482A which required additional fines for certain charges
including a $500 fine and 3 month revocation for serious injury and
$1000 fine and 6 month revocation for fatality. It's still not
appropriate, but that is what exists in the code.
After Randy VanZee was killed by a woman texting and driving, we
contacted the O'Brien County Attorney to make sure the penalties in
321.482A were enforced for failure to safely overtake a vehicle.
The CA wrote us and said he would not charge her with failure to
overtake a vehicle because under the definitions in 321.1(90)(a) a
vehicle "cannot be human powered." He said since the bicycle is human
powered, it is not a vehicle. Since it is not a vehicle, overtaking a
vehicle could not apply.
We went back to the Attorney General's staff. They were unaware of
the definition and spent some time researching the issue. They
concluded that there was a conflict in the Iowa Code that gave an
advantage to the motorist in any case where the code referenced a
vehicle.
We also asked Jeff Goodman and his staff, as well as another attorney
to take a look and see if they concurred. They agreed a problem
existed. Two measures were recommended - repealing the definition or
adding bicycle to problem areas of the Iowa Code. They also thought
repealing the definition may cause unforseen problems in other areas
of the code.
Legislative Services drafted the passage a little differently.
Instead of adding "vehicle or bicycle", they added a new section that
says a vehicle shall not be operated in a manner depriving a bicycle
operator of the full use of a lane if the lane is of insufficient
width for the vehicle and a bicycle to share.

Can some one from the IBC please explain this bill to me. Why are we fighting
for rights we
already have? The way it was reported on Iowa Public Radio today makes it sound
like cyclist
don't have the right to the lane and if this bill passes then we will. What
happens if the bill
fails. This gives people the notion that we don't have the right.

The shop was either owned or partnered with Dennis Malone, who owned the shop of
the same name in Iowa City. Don't remember the name of the person that ran it,
although I certainly remember him. Tall, almost anorexic looking guy with one
of those really scraggly beards that only covered the point of his chin. Equally
recognizable by the beer in his hand.
Don't know the exact address, but it was across the street from Coe College,
probably around the 2000 block, I'm thinking a little lower.
They sold jitneys and pukers (Gitane and Peugeot). Also sold a few Steyr
Clubman's from Austria. Approximate existence from 1972 (pretty sure on that)
to 1977 (Scientific Wild Ass Guess).

Dear departed Dave Holmes, rest his soul, may have added 10% or more to his
series of events on average, but individually they were a bit more variable.
If I recall, his 300km was only about 175 miles, about 10 too short, but his
200km was over 140 miles, or at least 16 miles too long!
I also remember that his 1000km in 2001 followed his regular 200km route
back from Bellevue to within 5 miles of Eldridge, then headed out on an
extra loop of 10-15 miles or so to make the required distance. Boy did we
laugh when we reached that line on the cue sheet!
Still miss the guy for all that.

PS, the previous trivia time didn't generate what I consider the
correct answer.
What was the longest USCF sanctioned race ever in Iowa?
The Iowa Road Race State Championships in, 1979 (?). 6 laps of the
Columbus City road course. At the time USCF rules required 100 miles
for the mens road race state championships. The Iowa District Rep
and race organizer, Tom Clayton, measured with that old dodge van
with the wildly inaccurate odometer. The course was later surveyed
at 20.5 miles, that worked out to 123 miles, 1 more lap than required.
Other long events, Dave Holmes 24 hour race based in Eldridge, which
later became the UMCA sanctioned 24 hour worlds. The longest
distance covered was over 500 miles on a regular road bike. Many of
Dave's brevets, officially 200km 300km 400km and 600km but Dave
always added an extra 10% or more. Ugh, but his participants
finishing rate at PBP was tops as a result. The various 'cross
state' rides. One or two got official recognition by USCF as record
attempts. The UMCA also recognizes numerous cross state solo rides as
records. But since these weren't head to head, I don't count them as
races. The Tour de Iowa was 750 miles but as far as I know, all
participants bailed or took short cuts and it wasn't USCF.
I got several answers thinking I was asking for the longest ongoing
race in Iowa. I'd have to say the state road race or the state time
trial. Those were the only two annual races going on before I
started in racing. The Moline Crit started before Old Cap, Melon
City and the Burlington Crit but the Iowa state championships were on
before any of those.

The dates are: Saturdays: March 7 and March 14, and Sunday March 22.
Mitchellville, IA: "City Park" on the corner of 3rd St NE and Jasper Ave NE.
Start time: 10:00AM, registration opens at 9:00. Online Registration will be
up soon.
Open category, 2 laps, 50 miles, 20 miles of pavement, 30 of gravel.
You can expect great training and a truly competitive event, an official to
record results, but, in all other terms it is truly a "training race". There
will be arrows marking the course but not corner marshalls and no lead or follow
vehicles. Entry will be $10 for one race, $20 for all 3.
I'll email when online registration is up.
Also, as the races come closer, I'll email with gravel conditions.
Thanks,
Lane Anderson

LK, you and your double barrel answers. I don't think I read past
the first one. :)
"Longest sanctioned event in Iowa would be the Old Capitol
Criterium. The longest race would be any senior mens 1/2 state road
race championship held in Columbus, IA. Clayton would run a one man
show following in his light blue VW bug convertable. No race numbers
since he would know everyone and he would drive around the weathered
few riders in the lead with about a mile to go to judge the finish.

i've also posted a bonus podcast, recorded following stage 2 of the

car as the race unfolds, while the latter part is from the team dinner table,
with ben, who was awarded the most courageous rider jersey for his efforts.
