My Bissell warm-up coat was last seen in Geoff's Bike and ski tent
towards the end of the day yesterday during Rock 2. If anyone know
where that is, please contact me at 206-947-7793 or email at
john.meehan@.... If found, please mail to

4300 East Mercer Way
Mercer Island, WA 98040

Thanks

I've often commented about the similarities between RAGBRAI
and traveling in foreign countries.  A recent article in the dsm register
on the opinion page amplified on how the author's trip to China helped prepare
her for RAGBRAI; I'm not so sure it isn't the other way around.

My
sojourn in Armenia as a Peace Corps volunteer only reinforced that idea.
Although Armenia is a former Soviet state that is not exactly 3rd world, a
large portion of the country is below the poverty level.  My host family
had to store water in the bath tub during the winter because water was only on
for two hours.   I had already
mastered the bucket bath from RAGBRAI; I only needed to add the bucket flush to
my skill set.I have been working on a power point presentation relating to some
of these ideas.  I need something on religion, and hope to get a picture of
Cardinal Sin.  What I need to do now is relate the night markets of Thailand or
the shukas to RAGBRAI.  Both are populated by street vendors selling a variety
of products.  While both can sell either food or hardware, the night markets
tend more towards merchandise while the shukas tend more towards produce and
other food.  Am looking for crowd scenes particularly of the downtown square
food courts, although the bike shop areas will also be of interest.  Your help
will be appreciated.Dick (Dirty) Thompson

May all sentient beings have happiness, and the causes of happiness.

May all sentient beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering.

May all sentient beings never be parted from the happiness that is free from
suffering.

May all sentient beings abide in equanimity,

free from attachment and anger that hold some close and others distant.

?? Thank you to all who participated in the DICE Cross series.? The racing was
fun, fast, and good times were had by all. There were some really good battles
for the Category title.? We will be doing the whole thing again next year.

After hours of failed attempts to get any kind of format of results onto the
bikeiowa yahoo that will be worth trying to read, I am giving up.?I have better
things to do with my time than attempting to?take?perfectly good modern
technology and try to make it?work on an Apple IIe.??

I will get all of the results posted with links to a PDF and?have them put on
the DICE site and?at Healthy Habits site ASAP.?

Can't wait to see you all at?the Jingle.???

TRIPLE D WINTER RACE is returning for its second year. Last year this race
turned out to be one of the most difficult 60 mile bike races in the history
of the sport with only 4 (Ben Shockey, Joel Cahalan, Josh Peterson & Dennis
Grelk) of the 35 starters finishing the shortened route in -30F wind-chill
temps. However all the runners and skiers finished as the snow conditions
were more favorable for those groups in addition to their routes being
entirely on the sheltered Heritage Trail (Rails to Trail System).

Check out my blog site www.SavedByTheBike.BlogSpot.com for all the
historical information on the 2008 race, and the updated information for the
2009 race which is just 6 weeks away!!! If you click on the 2008 results
there are links to some of the racers blogs. This race made national news on
FOX last year along with the Iditarod (Alaska Ultra Sport) and the Arrowhead
135.

Please forward this to other news groups that you are a member of for biking
or skiing or running (thanks).

While last year we just over 50 paid entries, this year the preliminary
feedback indicates we may have well over a hundred, if that's the case there
will be over $3000 in prize money (last year we gave out over $1100 in
cash). New this year are ultra distance running and skiing, and a PUB Crawl
by moon light after the awards ceremony at the race headquarters which will
again be at the http://www.grandharborresort.com/index.cfm

Be a part of a grass roots movement in endurance racing. this race is a
great starter race as it doesn't require the costly gear of the multiday
races, and if you start you get a finish distance. If you're considering
doing www.ArrowheadUltra.com this is a good tuning/prep race. If you think
you'll need a really fat tire bike for snow racing, check out last year's
winning rig ridden by Ben Shockey (he rode his 29x2.3 to victory over a
field of about 20 Pugleys and 15 other standard mountain bikes). However,
I'm getting a full fat tire rig for Christmas. just to be safe ;-)

Please note my new email address as I no longer work at EP.

PS, I'm living in "Winter Haven, Florida" right now and last week in they
had a "Wind-chill Advisory" the overnight low dipped in to the low 40's with
a 10 mph wind. burr. LOL.

PSS, we are also looking for some additional volunteers to help with the
race (some inside spots, some car based, a couple outside in the elements).

PSS, for those of you who raced last year, here's a quick summary of the
major changes:

1. New Ultra Distance Ski and Run Categories

2. ALL racers will finish at the Durango Bar

3. There will NOT be an alternate Bike Route (route will be the
same as ridden in 08 except the bikers will finish at the historic Durango
Handle Bar. - about 8 miles shorter than last year)

4. Awards for all ULTRA distance finishers not just category
winners

5. Guaranteed cash for Category Top Finishers

6. Nicer weather. ;-) although some of us really enjoyed it last
year.

Thanks to everyone that came out for Cranksgiving.
Even with the cold and snow we still had a great
turnout with 95 people who collected 2483 pounds of
food for the Food Bank of Iowa. Awesome!

Check out the results and pictures at
www.punkrockcycling.com

Thanks again to all who participated, donated and
volunteered to help make Cranksgiving '08 a success!!

I have reicently picked up a couple of older bicycles. I though that
they would fit me... lol too small. I thought that I would post them on
here and see if there would be any intrest in some classics.

posted is the link to my Flicker site where the pics are posted.

I would like to get $40 out of each and it depends on where the
delivery or pick up would take place.

If you have any questions about the rides just ask they are in the
garage.

To continue and confuse the ongoing roller racing saga!

Should they be inside? Should they be outside?

I dunno, but with the raging popularity of the Dirty Duathalon there seems to be
no question that the rolleur races would be more exciting and better attended if
a runners category were added. The technology exists to "run" these indoors or
out so please continue your bickering

1--no.
2--lee is an historical revisionist, in the great russian tradition. i have
an inside track on sanskrit [ask me about my ex- sometime], and as such, i
happen to know that these merry pranksters not only loved riding long hours on
their cyclos, but in their spare time, they enjoyed creating undecipherable
languages.
little known fact: while working to make sanskrit unaccessible to the
masses, sanskrit cyclo riders created their own lexicon of terms to describe
the various aspects of cyclo riding. later romans would discover these "lost
sanskrit cyclo texts" and--in a fit of nationalist pique--would claim full
credit not only for the development of the modern day bicycle, but also for
the language of the cyclo, "latin."
explains a lot about current tensions in the cycling world, doesn't it?
i mean, consider this: the french have long loved all things obscure,
useless and unobtainable, right? every have an old french bike with their
odd-sized bottom brackets and such? well, the french also just adore things
sanskrit, and this long-festering animosity between the french and italians has
older roots than many people appreciate.
it's true. but you won't find it in many history books, because the
italians refuse to print it out of nationalist pride, and the french don't want
anyone else to know the real truth because, well, they're french.
if you have any other questions you'd like to have cleared up, don't
hesitate to ask.
and thanks for asking, lee. now, don't you think it's time for you to
ride your rollers?

     quite simply, no.
"cyclo," from the latin "bike," and "cross," from the snaskrit for
approximately "chasing monkeys in the courtyard," cyclocross is nothing but
good
harmless fun [the monkeys never get caught or hurt]. ancient sanskrit
scholars used to ride their rickety wooden cyclos [ironically, ancient sanskrit
scholars preferred latin] during class breaks, shooshing their little nimble
mascots for fun.
eventually, the professors began awarding meaningless trinkets, called
"swag" [from the latin for "gilded crap"] to the student who "put the greatest
effort into doing the least" during these class breaks. for example, rather
than riding simple from point "a" to point "b," a swag would be awarded to
the scholar who first bunny hopped over the meditating student.
the ritual expanded from there, as you might imagine.
     good question, grasshopper.
now, go out there and have some fun. nyla and i have some runners to
heckle.

Question to the Almighty racing SaintS . . . . is cyclocross considering bike
racing? After all, there is running and jumping included too. If roller races,
time trials, and cyclocross races, I mean "exhibitions", are excluded then the
