Congrats from afar Johnny!

Thanks to all the riders who raced Kent Park. It was certainly one of our
better years as far as weather goes.
Special thanks to Michael Edwards and Mark Guthart without whom this event would
crumble into total chaos under it's own weight. Thank you to Cindy Shelangoski
for helping with registration.
Thanks to Bikes To You for bringing out the tasty donuts, it's always nice to
have extra support.
And of course thanks to Lee and Jane for taking the cake! (the new tradition at

There are still some spots open for Kent Park. Registration is in the 90's now.
The gates to the park will open at 7:00 am and number pick up will begin as soon
as we can get set up. Racing will start at 8:30.
There will be people directing you where to park. If you may for any reason
need to leave during the race i.e. on call for work, you will need to park in a
lower lot that is not on the course. Let them know if this pertains to you.
Once the race starts, no traffic will be allowed on the course!
As soon as the race is finished the park will be opened back up to traffic, so
be aware of this when cooling down.
Please be respectful of the park and the park rangers. They have been very
gracious in the use of the park for this event so if given the chance a quick
thank you to them would be great. Please pick up all trash, wrappers, bottles
etc.
We are once again racing for pies and beer, please race safe!
Everyone keep your fingers crossed and hope the rain holds off until the
afternoon.
Thanks,

hey, folks--
i can't nail a date certain right now, but i want to tip you off that we
are gearing up for a mid-april opening at the bike kollective in des moines.
as such, we're going to want to have maybe 15 to 20 bikes ready to roll out
by then. i'll be announcing a bike drop-off date in the near future, but if
you folks are so skilled and so inclined to help, we'll be asking you to
bring your handy tool box with you to the kollective location to spend a couple
hours checking out donated bike, making them road-worthy. no heavy lifting
required. we already have requests for four bikes, two of them to folks who
have never had bikes before. that's cool.
we'll have building times on saturday through friday, days and nights,
available, so if you think you might be interested, drop me a line, and let me
know what day or night might work best for you. you won't be locked in to
anything, but it would be great to know how many folks we might expect.
thanks so much to all of you who have helped thus far. we'll be hitting
you up for more of the same, but once we get going, you'll ride your own
bikes knowing that you've helped put old bikes under new people.
and ain't THAT grand?
thanks, and i look forward to hearing from you soon. see you all friday
night, too.
special note to folks who volunteer: i might interview you for my radio
show. isn't THAT special?

Greetings all! Wanted to formally announce that information and online
registration is now available for the Old Capitol Criterium and Iowa
City Road Race on April 26-27 in Iowa City.
There are a number of changes (improvements?) we've made this year,
with a couple of special ones I'd like to hilight...
** Collegiate Racing **
We have added a collegiate road race, team time trial, and criterium
to the weekend's festivities. In addition, the road race and team time
trial have both been selected as the NCCC Collegiate Conference
Championships, which should make for some exciting racing to watch.
** LAJORS for Junior Racers **
This year's Old Capitol Criterium has been selected as a Lance
Armstrong Junior Olympic Race Series (LAJORS) event, meaning that
juniors will be competing for the opportunity to gain valuable points
in the LAJORS competition.
** Women Cat. 4 Races **
While the Old Capitol Criterium has been a supporter of Women's racing
in the past, we've expanded this to create a separate Women's Cat. 4
event for the Iowa City Road Race as well.
** Women Cat. 1/2/3 Races **
With the separation of the Cat. 4 women, we've modified the "Women
Open" events to now be Women Cat. 1/2/3 events. As in year's past, the
winner of the criterium will be recognized as the Women's winner of
the Chris Lillig Memorial Cup. Additionally, the Women's road race is
also longer than it has been in the past!
** New Race Schedules **
There are a number of new time slots this year, so check the schedule
online or through the race flyer. For example, Women 1/2/3 road race
is now in the afternoon, Masters crit is now in the afternoon, Men
Cat. 4 crit is now in the morning. Check out the schedule for all the
details.
** New Website and Online Registration **
With this announcement, we're formally presenting the new race website
at oldcapcrit.com. There is a new "shopping cart" online registration
process available as well, allowing you to pick and choose races from
both days with one registration process (still working out a few
little quirks, but it's functional and we have people already signing
up). An online checkout/payment is also available with direct tie-ins
to PayPal for payments via credit card, eCheck, or PayPal.
More information will continue to be posted on the website, with
further announcements made here as well. I'm excited to be part of
this event and invite everyone to come, have fun, and enjoy the weekend.

Thanks to the 33 riders who braved the cold morning to come out and race at
Lake Macbride. This was a 2 hour race with the lead group completing 31 laps
around the course. I believe someone mentioned about 45 miles were covered.
We had a team from Wisconsin as well as a riders from Indiana and Connecticut.
Local rider, Jim Cochran, pretty much dominated and rode away with the win.
Other riders of note, Jimmy Carrico's 5th place finish (16 years old and
didn't he just start racing last year?).
7th place Ben Lewis who was riding in his second race ever.
And there's my husband who says his stench as a rider has already reached mid
season form. He says somewhere around an hour and forty minutes he passed gas
and even it passed him back.
I think it was unanimous, everyone was glad to be back out on the roads.
We sure did miss the smiling face of our friend, John Meehan. He would have
loved this race!

Another feather in Jim's already bristling cap, reportedly his front der cable
broke with 20 minutes to go so he had just the 53 or 39 up front plus whatever
his small cog is (11 er 12?) to fend off the rampaging field! What a guy, truly
a Regional Phenomenon!
