I guess it depends on how wide the median will be. I would guess a
couple of feet minimum to accmodate the inevitable parking meters and
sign posts. I think another risk is hitting pedestrians at the
intersections and those going to and coming from the cars to the
sidewalks across the bike lane. Whap! From the description of the
'safe zones', you would have to negotiate your way thru a crowd every block.

I did get nailed by a right side door one time. This was before bike
helmets so of course I landed on my head. I was riding thru stalled
traffic between the parked cars and the stalled cars and some
passenger decided to jump out of the car on the right. I've managed
to miss all other doors since.

Riding in NYC isn't as scarry as it looks. The over all speed is
lower than what you get around here and the drivers are much more
predictable. NYC has some pretty steep fines that seem to deter some
of the really bone headed moves you see here. Bigger challenges are
not getting your bike stolen in a New York minute, avoiding the thick
steel plates on the pave that cover construction everywhere and not
getting lung cancer from all that exhaust.

NY Times:A Busy City Street Makes Room for Bikes
  By WILLIAM NEUMAN
  Published: September 23, 2007
Cyclists and pedestrians never quite imagined it this way, but maybe there is
a use for all those cars after all. The city is planning to remake seven blocks
of
Ninth Avenue in Chelsea into what officials are billing enthusiastically,
perhaps a bit hyperbolically, as the street of the future...
[link]

The most unusual aspect of the design, which will run from 16th Street to
23rd Street, is that it uses a lane of parked cars to protect cyclists from
other
traffic. It does this by placing the bike lane directly next to the sidewalk on
the
western edge of Ninth Avenue, which is the left side of the street for those
facing north, in the direction of traffic. The plan also takes a lane from cars,
creating more room for pedestrians and for the bicycle lane. "I think it's a
sneak peek at the future streets of New York," said Janette Sadik-Khan, the
city's transportation commissioner. "It represents the kinds of innovative ideas
that we can explore to make the streets more livable." Next to the bike lane,
which will be 10 feet wide, will be an eight-foot section of pavement that will
act as a buffer, with plastic posts and large planters to keep cars from
entering. The parking lane will be to the right of the buffer zone, and beyond
that will be three lanes for traffic. The result will be a barrier of parked
cars
between cyclists and moving vehicles. "For cyclists, you've got a physically
separate lane that prevents motorists from coming in," Ms. Sadik-Khan said. It
is a design that has been used in cities in Europe but never in New York City.
Another feature will make life easier for people on foot. At each intersection,
a
raised island will extend into the avenue. Called a "pedestrian refuge," it has
the effect of shortening the distance traveled to cross the street to 45 feet,
from
70 feet. Ms. Sadik-Khan said that work would begin shortly and that the
remade street would be completed by next month. As part of the plan, single-
space parking meters will be replaced by Muni-Meters, which control many
spaces, and the cost of parking will increase to $2 an hour from $1.50. Ms.
Sadik-Khan said the makeover of the avenue was possible because traffic
volume in the area was low enough that cars could move as smoothly in three
lanes as in four. It is not difficult to see how that rationale could dovetail
with
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's proposal for congestion pricing, which would
charge drivers a fee to use the streets of Manhattan below 86th Street. The
fee is supposed to reduce the volume of traffic, which could theoretically free
up street space for other uses. Noah S. Budnick, the deputy director of
Transportation Alternatives, an advocacy group that works to improve
conditions for cyclists and pedestrians, said he thought a protected bike lane
would encourage more New Yorkers to get on bikes. "If you talk to the
average New Yorker, they'd ride a bike, but most people say the traffic is too
scary," Mr. Budnick said. He pointed to the example of a popular bike path in
Hudson River Park. "If you provide protected space for riding bikes, New
Yorkers are going to use it in droves," he said. Mr. Budnick was asked if the
idea of parked cars protecting cyclists changed his view of the oversized
S.U.V.'s that are often the bugaboo of bikers and environmentalists. After all,
the bigger the car, the better the barrier. "As long as they're not moving," he
said.

Well, it is here again, the next race in the Iowa Cyclocross Series.in the
Quad Cities, Illinois. On November 11th will be having race number eight of
nine total. We normally have this race at Green Valley Park in Moline, IL
but late summer flooding from the Rock River made the park a mess and too
much to clean up. So, we got busy and found another park to hold our event.
The map to Stephens Park is here http://dicetraining.com
<http://dicetraining.com/> and you will also see the race flyer there as
well. If you had ever done the famed Moline Criterium.the park is right off
of 7th Street Moline, just north of the start/finish line in the Belgium
area of Old Towne, Moline. New this year is on-line registration with Get
Me Registered and you can get to that right here
https://secure.getmeregistered.com/get_information.php?event_id=811. Within
Get Me Registered, we also have a course map to view as well. Registration
opens at 9am and the first race starts at 10:30am for those that don't
pre-register. Come out, race the new course, or view a very friendly
spectator course, and have some fun! Speaking of family fun, there is a
playground area for the kids, sand volleyball courts and a big fire pit for
those that want to bring some firewood and have a big fire. In the woods
around the north side of the park, there is also a small network of
single-track mountain bike trails. There is plenty of food and spirits in
the area for after race refueling. If you've never had a Belgium Village
VandeRuben or the VandeRaisin your in for a treat, come out and try a
regional favorite!!

"Messenger" is a film by Gary Beeber and is available for download in DVD
resolution for $1.99.

http://www.caachi.com/Members/garybeeb/messenger/landing

- About the Film -

Take a ride with Kamikaze, New York City’s most legendary bike messenger and
world class character. Be part of the action and learn the street wisdom he’s
gleaned about work, women and the meaning of life from his 25 years on NYC's
streets.

The film, which was shot in various locations throughout New York City, shows
Kami on his daily rounds making deliveries, and philosophizing about life as a
messenger and other subjects. The interviews introduce his boss, his coach for
his amateur baseball team, and those who earn their living working the streets
of Manhattan.

The film shows the hardcore side of Kami, riding like a bat out of hell up 6th
Avenue, as well as a kinder, more gentle Kamikaze at home. He puts Martha
Stewart to shame as he gives us a private tour of what he likes best in his
refrigerator, and we meet his dog Dukie. At the end of the film, Kami let’s us
all in on the meaning of life.

Exactly. What a great day of racing. We also need to thank Mark for
his excellent officiating - as always, it was the best.
And I want to thank Rich Hopson for a terrific race. After sitting on
his wheel for three laps I past him and his single speed, and he gave me
a gift 20-25 second lead, but not by choice, he crashed. I held the
led for several laps and with two to go he took the gift back with an
amazing effort. Such determination. And when he pasted me in the last
lap there was no response for me.
So, there's part of my report. I was honored to be a part of this fine
event.

Huge thanks to Marco, Paul, Rob, Donny, and everyone else who helped
put on today's state cyclocross championships. It turned out to be a
fantastic day for the race, with nice large fields and excitiing racing.

I wasn't sure of the best way to post the results and still have it be
clear on what they say. The results show the placement within each
category, the overall time for each rider (to help people see how far
ahead/behind they were from the next person), and how many laps down
each rider was from the leader of the main group. In the first race,
the leader of the main group proved to be William Huntsberger (winner,
cat. 4) while the leader of the main group for the second race proved
to be Brian Eppen (winner, cat. 1/2/3).

The race for the Cat. 4's was very exciting, with William Huntsberger,
Michael Edwards, and Chad Bishop each trading blows throughout the
race. Michael would lead a lap or two, then William would storm to the
front. Then Chad would make an appearance at the front only to then be
brought back by William and Michael. In the end, William would come
out victorious by 5 seconds over Michael and 9 seconds over Chad.
Great racing!

In the second race, Brian Eppen took the lead early and never looked
back, gradually building up a lead to finish over two minutes up on
2nd place John Olney. There was some suspense, however as John Olney
and Sean Walker would fight it out for 2nd/3rd place. Another great
race to watch and be a part of.

Thanks again to everyone for everything. I had a blast!

I noticed no costume for the brevet rider. : ) Might I suggest a glazed look
on the face, a blinking red light on the ankle, reflective tape on the
uniform, a route guide sticking out of the shorts, and a steady stream of
references to the number of centuries ridden this month.

Not sure what to wear for Halloween? This article, passed along by a
good roadie friend, will solve your dilemma. There's even a helpful tip
specifically for triathletes.
8 Halloween costumes for cyclists
As a cyclist, you are much, much better equipped for Halloween than the
average person. Why? Because you already wear outrageous costumes on a
daily basis.
Think about it. Even though you are a (presumably) sane adult, you wear
a shirt that would look much more at home on a superhero. You wear
shorts that are much, much too tight, as if you were on your way to lead
a jazzercize class. You wear a hat that belongs on an alien.
And, to top the whole look off, you wear what sound and look like
tap-dancing shoes.
It's no wonder, then, that cyclists tend to be pretty lazy about
dressing up for Halloween parties. Instead of putting time and money
into it, you just show up in the outfit you rode to the party in. Hey,
why not? A little sweat completes the effect, right?
What you don't realize, though, is that all your friends, family and
co-workers are rolling their eyes at your lack of imagination. "There
goes Tim," they say, "pretending again that his cycling outfit is a
Halloween costume."
It doesn't have to be that way, my friend.
By spending just a few extra minutes, you can alter your cycling outfit
for the evening, making it so you're not just "a cyclist" at the party,
but a very particular sort of cyclist. Simply follow these easy
instructions.
Doping Cyclist: Dress up in full pro kit. Use a marker to draw needle
tracks up and down one arm. Tie a length of surgical tubing above one
elbow and leave a syringe sticking out of your vein. Wheel around an IV
tower for the duration of the party. Stuff your jersey pockets with
bottles of drugs. When anyone asks what / who you are, respond that you
are a professional cyclist. When they ask what all the needles and drugs
are for, say you have no idea what they're talking about. No matter
what, do not admit you have any drug-related items on hand.
Mountain Biker (If You're normally a Roadie): Prepare for the party by
gaining 10Kg and getting 20-30 tattoos. Wear baggy pants -- baggy enough
that they keep falling down. Arrive drunk at the party and continue to
drink once you get there. Insist you have mad skillz.
Roadie (If You're normally a Mountain Biker): Prepare for the party by
putting a stick in your butt. Wear uncomfortably tight cycling clothes
for the party, drink nothing put thrice-filtered water and tell everyone
exactly how many calories and fat everything they're eating contains.
Triathlete: Don't come to the party, because you've only done four
workouts today and still need to get in one more and you don't want to
break training, no matter what.
Recumbent Rider: Tape your glasses together, somehow manage to affix a
pocket protector to your jersey, and loudly and insistently explain to
all and sundry that recumbents are really much more comfortable and
practical than "wedge" bikes. Talk a lot about prostates.
Recreational Cyclist: Wear street clothes with your right pant leg cuff
completely greasy and shredded. Wear a bike helmet backwards and cocked
to one side. Tell people that you're starting to bike again to get back
in shape.
Commuter: Wear street clothes, but carry a backpack or messenger bag
full of what are clearly stinky bike clothes the entire evening. Make
your helmet hair extremely obvious. Keep looking for opportunities to
casually introduce the fact that you are a bike commuter into every
single conversation in which you participate.
Fixie / Track Cyclist: Dress the same as a road cyclist, but you must
always either keep walking or -- if you must stay in one place -- you
must trackstand by moving a couple inches forward, then back, then
forward and back again.
See? Easy, effective, and totally transformational. Nobody will
recognize you. Better start preparing that "Best Costume" acceptance
speech now

More food for thought . . . . . . . . . . I still ride the same Raleigh 3

driving back from ames this morning, i lost count of the number of old,
raleigh-style 3-speeds with white-tipped front fenders cruising around the
town.
i noticed these as i drove by gas stations reflecting the overnight 12
cent per gallon price hike.
i couldn't wait to get home to park my car again.
