The Dan Bockenstedt Cup, aka the Iowa Road Race Championships, is coming up this
Sunday, and it's coming fast!
You still have time to send in your preregistration forms.? Get them to me by
Friday.
You can find a flier for the race at our clubs website,
www.chainreactioncycling.org
Entry forms are available at www.usacycing.org
If you bailed last year because of the downpour early in the morning, the
forecast is currently only a 10% chance of precipitation.? That should be much
better for the 50+ riders this year.
We look forward to seeing you there.

Amazing stories of dogs, dirt and pizza!
While it may seem that the summer has past, it is never to late to begin your
quest for the cup or the watered down version - a Cup O' Mississippi Mud (you
only need to complete 6 dirty centuries to earn said mud)
RAGBRAI is over, so hang your road bikes up, get out your fatties and join the
chase! What fun you'll have!

Kim, it is a DRAWING of a HED wheel. If you want to trade me a drawing for a

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) _ A Waterloo man who was pulled from the
Wapsipinicon River during an overnight stay on RAGBRAI in
Independence last week has died.
Sixty-two-year-old Rich Droste was unconscious when he was rescued
from the water on Thursday night. He died Monday night at a Waterloo
hospital. Eric Locke of Locke Funeral Home in Waterloo confirmed his
death. Funeral services are pending.
Droste was camping near the river. His son, Stewart Droste, says his
father was caught in the undertow below a dam.
RAGBRAI is the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. It
started on July 22nd in Rock Rapids and ended Saturday in Bellevue.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa
39th Edition Le Tour de l’Abitibi July 16-22, 2007
The Tour de l’Abitibi is the largest international stage races for junior
men 17-18 in North America. The UCI sanctioned event consists of a prologue
and 8 stages. The event is one of nine World Cup events for juniors on the UCI
race calendar where teams from all over the world compete. This is a stage
race based on time and riders must finish within the time cut to continue on
to the next stage. There were 26 teams consisting of 6 riders each in this
year’s tour.
Casey drove the team from Road Nationals in Seven Springs, PA to Val-d’Or,
Quebec in the rental van. Joe and I drove the UCI legal ISCorp wagon from
Milwaukee, WI to Val-d’Or. Casey and the athletes arrived within an hour of
Joe and me. Along the way, Ben Sharp (USAC Junior Programs Manager) called me
on my cell phone to inform me that Joe Kukolla would be riding for the US
National Cycling Team at l’Abitibi and that he got a rider to replace Joe.
Brett Jacoby from Wind Gap, PA would be Joe’s replacement. We were tight on
room
in the rental van so USAC transported several of our bikes and luggage while
we transported all the athletes including Joe and Brett.
During the week, we had our highs and lows associated with international
stage racing. Alex got a tenth place in the prologue consisting of 400 m
street
sprints which got us a 9th position in the caravan for the first road stage.
Car order in the caravan is not based on team overall classification but
rather individual GC. In the first road stage we lost a lot of time by losing
three riders in the last few miles of the stage. John Caldwell and Alex
Wieseler fell off the back and Dave Hackworthy was chasing after a crash and
got
caught up in the caravan and missed the final turn to the finish and had to
turn around and lost some time. After the first road stage we went from a
great caravan position to one near the rear for the rest of the week.
Stage 2 was the TTT and ISCorp finished 14th out of 26 teams.
Brett Jacoby had a great finish in Amos for stage 5. Stage 5 was a new
criterium course that consisted of a grueling climb that had riders falling off
the back each lap. Brett got into a late break away group of 13 riders and
finished 7th in the stage. Brett fit in really well with everyone on the team.
The overall winner of the tour was Taylor Phinney riding for US National who
is the son of Davis Phinney and Connie Carpenter. Taylor won the overall
brown jersey and the blue jersey for the best 17 year old rider.
William Garneau (Quebec) finished 24th overall. William Garneau is the son
of Louis Garneau and Louis was in attendance during all the stages usually
riding his pink Garneau bike in a full pink Garneau race kit.
This was my 5th tour l’Abitibi as a coach and this was by far the safest
tour to date. Three out of my five tour teams have had at least one totaled
bicycle. This year I did not see a totaled bicycle from any team. We had a
few
crashes but our riders were always able to remount their bikes and keep
rolling. We only had a few flat tires this year as well. The fewer crashes
are most likely due to the higher race speeds from higher quality field of
athletes this year.
Our top rider was Weston Luzadder and he is only 17 so he should be ready to
have a stellar tour next year now that he has one tour under his belt.
Overall all this was one of the best groups of athletes to work with.
Joe Kukolla and Brett Jacoby will be leaving July 31st for Europe where they
will both be racing for the US National Team.

Once again I messed up. Phil Curran did in fact win the 50/60+ helmet raffle

Phil, just go to Healthy Habits and see Bruce for your helmet. My apologies

The Cat 3/4 helmet will go to Shane Ellickson. Shane, please go to Scheels and
see Jason for your helmet.

Okay - so I know I'm going to get protests from Conn on this, but I
wanted to give everyone a heads up on what I know.
As some of you are aware, Conn was involved in a crash during last
Saturday's road race. The end result was a broken pelvis, multiple
abrasions, and a completely destroyed bike (literally - it was
destroyed). Despite all of this, my spies report that he is doing well
and in good spirits even though he may be off work for a few weeks
recuperating.
For many of you, this information may never have become known. In
large part because he does everything he can to avoid drawing
attention to himself.
However, given everything he and Bridget do for the sport and charity,
I wanted to post this and ask that you keep Conn in your thoughts. And
feel free to drop him an email to say "hey".
I fully understand I'll be on the receiving end of the "Wrath of Conn"
for posting this, but for someone who I have the utmost respect for in
what he does for the sport, I wanted to pass it along.

(This supplements a message I sent out earlier this week. They have added a free
dinner
for racers Saturday night at one of Omaha's finest brew pubs.)
Racing Is Just Part of the Action in Omaha This Weekend
Only days remain before the start of the seventh annual Dave Babcook Memorial
Cycling
Weekend. But it's not too late to get signed up to race or ride in this
extraordinary event in
Omaha, Nebraska.
We are offering up to 126 individual stage prizes (in 14 different categories)
plus overall
prizes totaling more than $7,500 for the stage race. It consists of a road race
Saturday
morning, a time trial Saturday afternoon and a criterium through the streets of
Downtown
Omaha on Sunday. More than $500 cash is also up for grabs in the criterium,
along with
beer nickels and Chipotle burritos.
Every registered racer will receive a coupon for a free Chipotle burrito, GU20
and GU gel
packets and a commemorative University of Nebraska Medical Center Eppley Cancer
Center
bracelet. Riders signing in for the criterium will all also receive a beer
nickel to redeem at
The Upstream Brewery, located just a few blocks from the course.
As an added benefit to every racer, a free buffet will be served at the Upstream
West
(Legacy location) Saturday night. Sign-up will take place before the road race
Saturday
morning.
If racing isn't your style, we invite you to take part in our inaugural Babcook
Family
Research Fund Cycling Tour on Sunday at 9 a.m. This relaxing, fun ride from
Downtown
Omaha to Boyer Chute and back (long course of 31 miles, shorter route of 19
miles) will
get you in the mood to watch the criterium the rest of the day.
Finally, we have ordered up "Chamber of Commerce" weather – highs in the mid-80s
and
lows in the mid-60s for both days. What more can you ask for?
Pre-register for either the stage race or the tour at sportsbaseonline.com.
We hope to see you this weekend!

Get your teams together or your support crew ready! Iowa's fifth
annual 24hr race is just around the corner. All info and online
registration can be found at Bikeiowa.com. Don't forget to register
before Aug. 18 to save your self a little cash. After the 18,
registration goes up $25 per person. And remember $1000 goes the solo
winner of the 24!
Nice race series. A reasonable alternative to Stupor Week. $13 entry fees, man
I haven't seen any that low since about 1989! In IL we get TT's for $25 (plus
extra if you're not an ABR member) with no prize money, no beer or cookies :(
and the results are posted promply 2 hr.s after the event is over. The 2Bee and
DICE events are low-key but well-organized and smooth-running. They are what
grassroots racing is all about.
Thank you.

Subject: [BikeIowa] Le Bon Doc Tour Stage Race
This should be my final word on the Le Bon Doc Tour. First of all I would like
to thank everyone who came out to participate. Second I would like to
congratulate everyone who won their category. For me it was a great experience
just getting to see what a stage race felt like. I've already seen a Build A
Bear party that the proceeds go to and that makes it all worth while both on and
off the bike. I'm a bit sorry to say that this was not reason enough for the
local big clubs to make much of a showing, DICE excluded. So the project in
financial terms will not merit doing again. That being said, allow me to thank
the people that made this possible: Jason Weldon/Scheels, Bruce Grell/Healthy
Habits, Donnie Miller/Donnie's Indoor Cycling Experience. Our great ref staff
Ruth, Cindy, Bridget and Mark Guthart who with Donnie, Karen and Ed took over on
Sunday in my absence. Thanks also to Vern Rotert and HBA fro the use of the oval
for Tuesdays event. Tha nk you to Bike Tech for the donation of a helmet. Thanks
to Ian Robinson for paying for all the permits in the name of his company Edward
Jones Investments. Last of all and by no means least of all is Le Bon Doc, John
Meehan who not only is strong enough to race with broken bones but strong enough
to treat these special kids and have enough left to want to see them smile. I
wish you God Speed, you will be missed.
A special note: It was by mistake that two helmets were awarded to riders who
did not meet the 5 race minimum in the raffle. In fairness to the riders who
were in the Cat 4 and 50+ and raced at least 5 times, there will be another
drawing for these Cats on Friday by Jason Weldon at Scheels The winners will be
notified. Sorry about the confusion.
Thank you,
Conn Day

but it was just simple blood transfusion. seriously, that's all it is, from
what the reports say thus far. is one not allowed to get blood? he
crashed, and messed up both knees, for heaven's sake.
i lost a fair amount of blood recently, and suffered extreme dizziness
for several days following--about a week, actually--without getting topped
off. given the chance again, i'd take on a quart.
granted, maybe they've found more than just someone else's blood, but
until then. . .
of course, it IS a certified french lab.

Vinokourov positive for transfusion, Astana quits Tour
The Tour de France was rocked by news that Astana's battered team leader,
Alexandre Vinokourov, tested positive for a homologous blood transfusion
after Saturday's time
trial<http://www.cyclingnews.com/road/2007//tour07/?id=results/tour0713>in
Albi.
*L'Equipe* reported on Tuesday afternoon that the Kazakh's blood had shown
evidence of a transfusion from another person with a compatible blood type
in an analysis done in the Châtenay-Malabry laboratory.
The 33 year-old Kazakh was the winner of the stage 13 time trial in addition
to Monday's stage 15 to Loudenvielle. A new blood control was apparently
taken after stage 15 and is currently undergoing analysis. Homologous blood
transfusions have been detectable since the 2004 Olympic games.
Upon receiving the news, the Astana team has allegedly quit the Tour,
according to the French newspaper.
The news broke while Saunier Duval was holding its press conference and its

goes on."

Thanks also to Vern Rotert and HBA fro the use of the
oval for Tuesdays event. Thank you to Bike Tech for the donation of a helmet.
Thanks to Ian Robinson for paying for all the permits in the name of his company
Edward Jones Investments. Last of all and by no means least of all is Le Bon
Doc, John Meehan who not only is strong enough to race with broken bones but
strong enough to treat these special kids and have enough left to want to see
them smile. I wish you God Speed, you will be missed.
Thank you,
Conn Day

New I-74 bridge to include a bike path
By Dustin Lemmon | Monday, July 23, 2007
The new Interstate 74 bridge will include a bike path spanning the
Mississippi River, and likely users are excited about cycling between Moline
and Bettendorf for the first time without having to go miles out of the way.
Dan McNeil said he's anxious for the bridge even though it will be several
years before construction begins. "Obviously, I'm excited," he said. "I'm a
Moline resident, and to have the connection (to Bettendorf) will allow me to
get to Bettendorf and Davenport. I go down to the Government Bridge (now)
and loop back if I want to get to Bettendorf."
What the bike path will look like and where exactly it will be attached to
the bridge has yet to be determined.
Moline and Bettendorf have approved memorandums of understanding with the
Iowa and Illinois departments of transportation to have the path
constructed, maintained and operated. The Illinois DOT will build the bike
path when the bridge goes up, and the two cities will later maintain it.
Marisa Kollias, a spokeswoman for the Illinois DOT, said the memorandums of
understanding signed last week are an initial step toward constructing the
bike path and were necessary to establish funding responsibilities. She said
the department hopes to have a better idea for the construction timeline
this fall.
Bettendorf expects to spend $1.2 million to connect the existing bike path
along the river to the new bridge, although that amount could change before
the bridge is built, and Moline will spend $115,000.
Bettendorf's expense is higher because the city will need two connections,
including one that descends from the bridge to the bike path along the
river, south of Gilbert Street. The second connection will be along Grant
Street and will also be an access point for maintenance vehicles, Steve
Grimes, Bettendorf's director of parks and recreation, said.
In Moline, the path comes to grade and will not require a second ramp.
Full funding for the I-74 bridge has not been approved.
Kathy Wine, executive director of River Action Inc., a nonprofit
organization based in Davenport, wonders what the proposed bicycle bridge
and its connections to existing paths will look like and what kind of view
of the river it will provide.
"Are they going to be open structures so you can see what the bridge looks
like, or are they going to be a berm? I think the design is foremost in
peoples' minds," she said.
McNeil, who also works for River Action, said the new bridge will serve as
another connection between two national bike trails that intersect in the
Quad Cities - the American Discovery and the Mississippi River trails.
He thinks the bridge will strengthen the area by providing better pedestrian
access to all of the cities.
"We do live in a car culture, and sometimes it's hard to get away from
that," he said.
Chuck Oestreich, a bicyclist from Rock Island, agrees. "It's vastly
important in an age where we realize our transportation isn't just through
motor vehicles," he said.
While some plans are still being discussed, other details about the new
bridge are already known.
Scott Hinton, city engineer for Moline, said the bike path across the bridge
will be 14 feet wide and will be separated by about eight to 10 feet from
the motor vehicle traffic lanes on the west side of the bridge. It also will
likely be lower than the rest of the bridge to prevent rocks and other items
from being kicked up at pedestrians and bicyclists, and to contain traffic
accidents.
The bike path also will have a separate lane for pedestrians and two
landings where people can stop to rest and observe the river, Hinton said.
The overlooks "will have a nice view without being in the way of travel," he
said.
Hinton said at the moment it would be the only interstate bridge in the
country with a bike path. It took a while for the departments of
transportation to agree to the idea, but it was necessary since the two
cities could not afford to build a separate path crossing the river on their
own.
"It was certainly something new, and it was something they had to think on a
bit," he said. "They understand that we need it."
One idea that was dismissed was keeping the old I-74 bridge for pedestrian
and bicycle traffic. That would have been too costly for the cities to
maintain, Hinton said, so the Illinois DOT now plans to demolish the old
bridge.
The new bike path across the river is also expected to boost tourism in the
area.
Joe Taylor, president of the Quad-Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau,
said it's not possible to track how many bicyclists ride through the
Quad-Cities from out of town, but he expects the new bridge and its view to
draw even more of them to the area.
"Certainly, the visual fascination with the Mississippi River is something I
think we as residents sometimes take for granted," Taylor said. "This gives
them a chance to walk across and a chance to pause and reflect."
