happy new year, everyone.
just a quick note to say thanks to everyone who has read, posted on,
referred to, or come to a ride that has been listed on the g-spot, the central
iowa ride bulletin board [link below]. we are just over a week into this
thing, and i am delighted to report [although, given the very nature of the
place, ANYONE can do the math as i have] that there have been over 70 comments
relating to rides left. now, granted, many of them have been left by me, but
that's just by way of me riding a lot, and wanting to reaffirm rides or inten
tions or whatever.
but one TRUE measure of early success is that there have been rides
posted for EVERY day since its inception, and that the number of folks showing
up
for these rides has been, for december, startling, frankly. there have been
a number of rides of 10 or more, even on crappy, rainy new year's eve day,
when we had over a dozen brave, hearty, crazy cyclists show up.
we have been blessed with a number of NEW riders, too, which is another
of the goals i had in mind for this place.
i'm also happy to see that folks besides ME have been posting rides,
too, and glad also that they're not all road rides.
and i'm also relieved that it has remained a RIDE BULLETIN BOARD, not a
complaint site.
so THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU everyone from all of us at the
g-spot,

One more try on the link, as it was not highlighting the whole link.

If for some reason this does not work, just go to www.ebay.com and do
a search on trek fuel 100. There were only 2 listed last time I
looked.

Please let me know if any in your area are out of business, or I have the

Yahoo has instituted a new Spam filter for groups. Apparently it thinks
Donny Miller is a spamer. I'd rather deal with spammers myself so I've
turned off the spam filter. I prefer to not let the spamers get on the
list in the first place. I only had to remove a few for spaming in the
past 6 years. Anyhow, this latest email from Donny was sent 1 week ago and
appears to refer to last weekend. (Psst, put dates in your posts). The
other pointless change I made is to tell yahoo to tell me when it flags
posts as spam instead of me just happening upon them.

The Winter Indoor Series is alive and well this weekend with a new course to
try this Saturday and Sunday starting at 9am! Please reserve your spot by
calling or e-mailing me. If you feel like getting in the Quad City Times
newspaper they will be here on Sunday with a reporter and photographer to do
a story on the CompuTrainer with the series in the paper called "The way we
play". The course we will be racing is the Coors Morgal-Bismark (modified)
without the 6.3% hill in the last 6 tenths...I flattened it out and we now
have a sprint finish for this weeks racing on a 12.5 mile course. See my
website for details at.

http://dicetraining.com/race-info/ Again, we decided to turn off the
drafting to make this more like Time Trials...so no help from anyone else.
I now have over 300 courses to choose from and more to download! You could
actually come in and never ride the same course twice! The prizes this
weekend will be lottery tickets to the day's winner and a $25 gas card to

happy holidays, central iowa cyclists!
i've just created a new blog call the g-spot [for "go spot," the spot
where cyclists can go to learn about rides that are scheduled, or to schedule a
ride for any particular day, up to a month or two in advance].
it's pretty simple. go to the blog
_http://g-spot-ridecentral.blogspot.com/_
(http://g-spot-ridecentral.blogspot.com/) and scroll down to the day
in question. all the information will be found in the comments section. if
you want to learn what rides are set for that day, someone will have it
posted in the comments for that day.
if you want to post or create a ride for some particular day, likewise,
go to that day, hit to comments section, and post away.
ANYONE can post. you don't have to identify yourself, you don't have to
type in a code word or anything.
it is NOT a political place, nor is it a place to talk about how great a
rider you are.
IT'S JUST AN INFORMATIONAL SITE. PLEASE KEEP IT THAT WAY.
thanks. and feel free to send me feedback, or give me suggestions.
but PLEASE use it, and pass the address around!!!

Building better bikes 30year E. Iowa Building better bikes

30-year E. Iowa ‘bikesmith’ always up for a challenge By Dave DeWitte
The Gazette W EST BRANCH — Custom bike builder Tom Teesdale seems to be
in slow motion until, in the blink of an eye, he slaps on a pair of
welding goggles, fires up his torch and grabs a bronze brazing rod.
After 30 years of building human-powered vehicles, the West Branch
craftsman is Iowa’s veteran bicycle builder, one of a handful of
specialists in the state who can build a cycle to fit the client’s
unique body, disability or athletic goals. Teesdale has built thousands
of racing cycles, touring cycles, mountain bikes and tandems. For the
past several years, he has worked alone in a nondescript metal building
on a West Branch side street. He has little need for advertising.
Cyclists from across the Midwest always manage to find him. ‘‘If it’s
got wheels, I’ll try it,’’ says the plain-spoken 54 year-old,
resembling an oldtime blacksmith with his beard and welder’s apron.
Teesdale loves to try something new, and this week is one of those
special times. He is building a recumbent trike to the design
specifications of Phil MacTaggart, 56, : of Geneseo, Ill. In the
cycling world, expensive recumbent trikes are coming into the
mainstream, as baby boomers who grew up during the ‘‘bicycle boom’’
reach the age at which upright bicycles are no longer comfortable. The
difficulty of transporting a recumbent trike, which takes up more space
than two regular bikes, has been a stigma, however. MacTaggart thinks
he’s found the solution. MacTaggart’s trike is designed to be quickly
disassembled into parts small enough to fit into a large metal suitcase
with wheels. MacTaggart says the case can be easily lugged through an
airport on its wheels, and reassembled in a matter of minutes. Once
it’s reassembled, the suitcase becomes a functional part of the trike,
serving as a luggage compartment and head rest. MacTaggart wants the
new trike in time to take it on a winter trip to Costa Rica with his
wife in February. He chose Teesdale for the project because he has
worked with him before on other designs for Pterosail, the trike
company he founded with his son, John, of North Liberty. ‘‘He’s great
to work with,’’ MacTaggart says. ‘‘He gets a big kick out of making
novel things and coming up with ideas that would only come from
somebody who makes custom bikes,’’ While he’s impressed by Teesdale’s
capabilities as a problem- solver, MacTaggart says he’s also been
impressed with Teesdale as a business owner who takes a personal
interest in his clients’ projects. ‘‘He’s helped us out in all sorts of
ways we didn’t expect, and didn’t ask any recompense,’’ MacTaggart
said. Teesdale began building framesets in 1976, when he was a bicycle
mechanic at now-defunct Illini Schwinn Center in Macomb, Ill. It was
the height of the ‘‘bicycle boom’’ that followed the Arab oil embargo
of the 1970s. Teesdale admired some of the first Americans to build
framesets that rivaled the racing equipment then coming in from Europe,
like Californian Albert Eisentraut. For his first project, Teesdale
ordered a build-yourown- bike frame kit from a company called Proteus
in New York. The project turned into a more- than- adequate road cycle,
which he still keeps to this day. After that, Teesdale, who had been
attending college to become a math teacher, was hooked on building
bikes. ‘‘I sold my second one, and made rent,’’ Teesdale said. ‘‘After
that, I was a bike bum.’’ Although he took a sixweek welding class at a
community college, Teesdale’s cycle- building skills are selftaught.
One of his early breaks came when the now-defunct World of Bikes in
Davenport brought him onboard as its in-house frame builder. Later, he
went on to build bikes on contract for Gary Fisher, one of the leading
mountain bike brands; Terry Precision, which makes bikes designed for
women; and a flotilla of other high-end bike suppliers. For the past
several years, Teesdale has concentrated on custom jobs for his own
individual clients. Most of the projects cost $600 to $1,500 for a
custom built and painted frame only. The cost of components and wheels
can at least double that cost. Teesdale is modest in describing his own
work. ‘‘People say the bikes I build have a certain ride or feel to
them,’’ Teesdale says. ‘‘I don’t know about that.’’ Teesdale does not
believe in the ‘‘perfect bike,’’ and while he works mainly in steel, he
acknowledges that newer materials such as carbon fiber and titanium
make great bikes. ‘‘A bike is a very personal thing,’’ he says.
‘‘People name their bicycles, and once they get attached to them, it’s
hard for them to give them up even though maybe they’ve had a bad
crash.’’ For now, Teesdale has no plans to retire, or go back into
contract manufacturing. ‘‘They say if you do something long enough, you
become a legend,’’ Teesdale said. ‘‘At this point, I’d say I’m
something more like a myth.’’ • Contact the writer: (319) 398-8317

there's talk growing on the trails list about an xmas morning ride,
and while i think that is an EXCELLENT idea, i suspect it will be an
off-road affair, which would be a wonderful plan "b" in my log book.
what is the interest in an xmas day ROAD/GRAVEL ride? or, how about
all three: road, gravel, and singletrack? [lou, i'm talking 800 or 900
am, NOT 600 am!]
please respond, or it looks like i'll either be riding by myself, or
off-roading it.
not that there's anything WRONG with that!

We had some great racing again this last weekend and the results are posted
on my website www.dicetraining.com/race-info/computrainer under News and
then CompuTrainer results. In posting to the Bike Iowa Yahoo Group, the
results get jumbled and hard to read, so I will post results this way.plus
this also keeps the file size down for those with older machines. On
Wednesday I will post the info and reminder for the next race this weekend.
Since Sunday is Christmas Eve, if it is OK with everyone else we are going
to do Saturday's races on Friday Evening starting at 6pm and we will do
Sunday's races on Saturday starting at 9am with the same format as always.3
categories with beginner, intermediate and advanced. Thanks for reading and
stay tuned for more.

I've attached a course profile for this weekends races.

Instead of doing Category racing by skill: Beginner, Intermediate and
Advanced, with each having their own time slot, we will run three races and
run mixed categories to keep people from waiting around for their time slot.
It is better to race against someone than to ride by yourself and not get
the motivation that a normal race would give.

We had 10 racers take part in the first weekend of racing. Results are.

*Don't forget to bring your bike!

Directions are below.

The Bees will once again step out of the mainstream. This time, however, we
feel that instead of just stepping somewhere that is not occupied, we are
stepping into the future. Another big change is we will not be doing it
alone, as the DICE Team is coming along.
Starting next Saturday and Sunday, we will begin a non sanctioned race
series that will last until the beginning of March. For at least 4 hours
each day there will be high tech indoor racing with up to 8 people competing
over various courses throughout the series. Each race will last roughly 45
minutes. At the end of the series there will be a few raffle prizes donated
by Healthy Habits bike shop of Bettendorf. This should not disrupt the
roller season with the flexibility of days you can race. You will use your
own bike to race.
The races will be from: 8 am to 10 am for Cat 4 and 5
10-12 for CAT 3, 2, 1
Additional hours will be added at the two opposite extremes if need.
The cost is $15 to race and $10 to re race. Build up as many points for the
raffle as you care to. The entry will go to cover the use of the club.
Once again, this is non sanctioned but IBRA and the points are welcome to
come along for the ride if they wish.

We suggest you reserve a time by calling Donnie Miller at 877-743-0261.
Please only reserve a spot if you are sure you are going to be there.
Results will be posted on the Two Bee and DICE websites.

straight thru the stop light and Donnie's Indoor Cycling Experience is the
first drive on the right in a white building with a green roof, which is the
very last business on 16th Street (next is the Rock River). There is a big

By DAVID KRAVETS and PAUL ELIAS
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -Former elite cyclist Tammy Thomas was indicted by a federal
grand
jury Thursday on charges of hindering the government's steroid probe.

Thomas, 36, is accused of three counts of perjury and one count of obstruction
of justice
for allegedly lying to a federal grand jury investigating a steroid ring that
spanned across
many sports.

The indictment adds cycling, a sport often associated with doping, to a probe
that has
exposed steroid use in professional baseball, football and track and field.

Thomas was banned for life in August 2002 after testing positive for the
performance-
enhancing drug Norbolethone, which was detected in her urine samples.

At the time, the drug was an obscure steroid that had been used in a few human
tests in
the 1960s. It was rediscovered by chemist Patrick Arnold, who supplied BALCO
with
undetectable performance-enhancing drugs and is among five people who have
pleaded
guilty in the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative investigation.

Norbolethone never had been marketed for public use, which made it helpful to
athletes
seeking an undetectable edge. The substance, also known as Genabol, became
popular
among Olympic athletes during the 2000 Sydney Games.

The indictment accuses Thomas of lying when she testified she never used
performance-
enhancing drugs. She also is said to have lied when she testified that she did
not get
illegal drugs from Arnold, who was convicted in the scandal earlier this year
and is serving
a three-month sentence in a Morgantown, W.Va. federal prison.

Authorities ordered Thomas to make an initial appearance Jan. 5 in federal
court.

Thomas, a Yazoo City, Miss. native, was a silver medalist in the individual
sprint in the
2001 World Track Cycling Championships. She always has maintained her innocence
and
said the positive results might have been triggered by contraceptives she was
using.

Last month, Trevor Graham, coach to track sensations Marion Jones, Justin Gatlin
and Tim
Montgomery, also was indicted for allegedly obstructing the steroids probe. He
has
pleaded not guilty.

Each count carries a maximum five-year term and $250,000 fine.

Thomas did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

With the indictment of Graham and Thomas, U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan said the
government's steroid probe has entered a new stage in which athletes are being
targeted
for lying.

"A third stage has begun as we bring charges against individuals who lied to
investigators
or committed perjury while testifying under oath to a federal grand jury," Ryan
said.

The government is investigating Barry Bonds on suspicion that he, too, lied that
he did not
use performance-enhancing drugs given to him by his trainer, Greg Anderson.

Anderson pleaded guilty to steroid distribution and money laundering charges,
served
three months and is back in prison on a contempt of court charge for refusing to
testify
against Bonds.
