Wanted to let everyone know we will be conducting an awards ceremony
for the Rider of the Year at the IBRA meeting this weekend. (You do
remember those standings, right?) :)
I'll have the final standings posted here tomorrow along with a
summarized rider of the month list as well.
1st/2nd/3rd place riders of the year will receive engraved plaques at
the meeting (1st place will be personalized). And yes, I am including
a separate 60+ category this year (hmmm...wonder who won that one).
Riders of the month will get their names put into a drawing to be held
at the meeting as well. You don't have to be in attendance to win, but
it'd be nice so I don't have to try and hunt you down afterwards.
Prizes for the drawing are being finalized and will be formally
announced when I post the results. It's likely to include a set of
rollers, perhaps a computer/HRM, and then possibly a couple of free
2007 license renewals. We'll see - I'm getting those details worked out.
Having said that, I'd like to thank Bruce, Lane, and everyone else who
has conducted the various series points throughout the year. Hopefully
they kept racers motivated to continue racing while the ROY/ROM stuff
was gathering dust. :)
Stay tuned!

I'm there. And any pizza is just fine with me. How about a ride before
the lunch/meeting or even riding at Sugarbottom before going to the meeting?

I'm in charge of the food for Sunday. We are getting Pizza Hut pizzas,
as usual. Let me know if you want something in particular. Lee
Venteicher likes bread sticks without cheese. Landon Beachy likes
chicken and pineapple pizza. I'm still getting two Canadian bacon and
pineapple pizzas for Brad and Nate Roark even though they have not
attended in years. Creme soda for Chris Congdon and non-cola for Landon.
The food and beverages are for you, but I'm not a mind reader. Pies for
dessert. Feel free to bring something else if you like. Email me if you

as yet another iowa bicyclist [this one just 16] is struck and killed by a
motorist, the time is right to begin a list, a registry of sorts, of folks
here in the iowa bicycle community who are, or might be, interested, willing,
and at times available, to attend these funerals, as a sign of solidarity for
our fallen kindred spirits.
as it happens all too often [there was a 39 year-old woman struck and
seriously injured near ames, also this weekend], we lose one of our own,
whether it has been our pleasure to know the individual or not. as many of us
learned from our somber experience with john maxwell recently in dallas center,
our appearance actually DOES help the family cope with their loss, even if we
are strangers.
it is an opportunity for ALL cyclists to grieve, and to show that we all
are part of a community, made of real, feeling people, and not just some
person out on a bike [which, of course, we are that, too].
so with this lengthy intro, i'm proposing that SOMEWHERE here in
cyberland there must exist a means for us to in a sense register our
willingness to
take the time and go to these funerals, after someone makes contact with the
family or funeral director.
or at least to notify all possible groups of the need to attend such a
thing.
and it has to be a sort of "telephone tree" kind of thing--except here
online--but with all the various lists that exist hooked together somewhere or
somehow.
so we need to establish a data base, or something, and i CLEARLY am not
the right person to do this, computer illiterate that i am.
rick? scott? SOMEBODY? does there exist a list of many, most, or all
the various bike-related elists? IS there some way to do this?
because if it is at all possible to go, i would every time. [i can't
tomorrow, but...]

Cyclists,
As a follow-up to today’s earlier posting re: the tragic death of young
Lewis Palmer of Waukon, I’m posting Lewis’ obituary. For many, this news
will be filler in their local newspaper, if it makes print at all. I never
knew this young man, or his family, but knowing something of his short life
makes the senselessness of this incident less sterile.
I speak only for myself…
James Thacker

A 16 year old cyclist was killed by car near Waukon. The media
reports the car was attempting to pass the cyclist and collided with
the bicycle to avoid an oncoming car rather than wait for safe time to
pass.
The media has also reported a hit from behind crash of a bicyclist
near the Boone/Story County line. Details are very limited in this case.
The Iowa Bicycle Coalition has contacted law enforcement in Story and
Allamakee counties. As details become available, we will issue a
statement.
The deaths of Daniel Young, Bill Perrier, John Maxwell, and now Lewis
Palmer all appear very preventable. The most painful part of these
situations is the driver remains protected and walks away with a
traffic citation and a civil liability.
The deaths of the most vulnerable users of our public rights of way is
outrageous and violent. Distracted, drowsy, drunk, or drugged driving
can no longer be tolerated.

All bikers... esp. Eppens, Andre's and Logans.... The Mable Tandem just rode the
Dirty Duathlon course for this weekend and it is (mostly) tandemable! We need

The Des Moines Dirty Duathlon is this Sunday (Nov. 5) at noon... Online
registration (and the discounted fee) closes Wednesday, Oct. 31... If you
haven't registered yet, do it now:
http://www.bikeiowa.com/asp/shop/asp/product.asp?product=168
We now have awards for the top three overall finishers and top three
finishers in most categories. There will be a prize drawing for a pair of
Oakley shades and other schwag from Rasmussen bike shop and elsewhere, too.
Central Iowa Trail Association volunteers have been doing trail work to
refine the already-excellent Center trails. A trail/course map is online:
http://www.centraliowatrails.org
And don't forget to invite your family and friends to join you by forwarding
this email.
There are racers registered from all over the state. Don't miss this event.
See you Sunday, Nov. 5!

Since Day Light Savings has now robbed us of an hour of sun light at
night, it is going to be hard to practice Thursday's at night. Unless
we purchase some glow sticks and attached them to the barriers (though
this could be fun). So, what are everyone's thoughts of having a
Saturday morning practice instead? Would Union Park at 9a work? I
would like to keep this going until Jingle Cross.
Does anyone have experience, either good or bad, with a Cannondale headshock?
Are they durable? Can they be serviced 'DIY', or do they require a trip to a
Cannondale dealer? Do they work OK, or should they be avoided?
Thanks,
Randle

Curious to see if any of my fellow bikers have a good
small frame road bike hanging in the garage that they
would like to sell. My 13 year old daughter, very
athletic 5' 2" says she would like to ride on RAGBRAI
with her dear old dad next year. Would like to get her
on a bike to see if she would would be interested in
racing a little too.

At today's State Championships (by the way, excellent job Marco),
several people asked me if the Jingle Cross Rock will be in the same
place as before....NO!
Please be aware that the location for 2006 Carousel Volkswagen Jingle
Cross Rock has changed from previous years...For 2006, we will be at
Johnson County Fairgrounds in Iowa City for both days. The
information and course maps are on the race website at
www.JingleCrossRock.com
Besides ample parking and a much more spectator friendly venue, the
Johnson County Fairgrounds has indoor restrooms and showers
available. Day of race registration and packet-pickup will be inside
building C.
But don't wait for race day to register. Please remember that only
pre-registration gets you entered into the SWAG drawing. Pre-
Registration is available on BikeReg.com and also avoids the $5 day
of race fee. In addition, I am splitting the Bikereg service fee with
you so it should only be about $1 and change to pre-register.
Race Highlights and Summary:
* $13,000 in cash
* $3,000 in SWAG
* 23 races
* 6 races for ladies (2 beginners, 2 Elite, 2 Masters 35+)
* $3300 up for grabs for our lady riders (Thank you Casey's General
Stores, TeamEstrogen.com, IC-Coralville Sports Authority)
* Single Speeders ride solo each day, no other events during those
races
* Free Kids Grinch's race on Sunday (register also thru Bike Reg, no
charge for this one, limit 60 kids)
* All races will have honorary starters who have been at the
Children's Hospital of Iowa

I'd like to thank each and every one of you again for your support of the
raffle held today in Newton at the end of the 2006 Iowa Cyclocross
Championship Races. Selling 100 tickets in three days was beyond amazing and
inspiring.
The Cross Mafia has been a strong fundraiser for the Iowa Chapter of the
Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America for the past several years due to
your continued generosity. Mid-season, we've donated $3900 since 2002 and
will have another impressive donation at the end of the season.
Greg at Rasmussen Bike Shop and Specialized have helped create a new
fundraising opportunity for the Foundation with a 2007 Specialized Tri Cross
Comp for raffle. Donny Quixote, Quixote Coaching, stepped up to the plate to
offer time from his busy coaching and bike fitting practice to make sure the
winner is perfectly sized on the shiny new rig. Thank you again for your
support - be sure to ask them for help with your training and fitness needs!
Unfortunately, I'm not the only one in the Iowa bike racing scene coping
with this disease - I know of at least two other active racers with the
disease and have met many more who are glad to see that we're all building
awareness through racing our bikes, having a great time with our friends and
families and proudly wearing our 'Cross Out Crohn's' t-shirts throughout the
year. Thank you.
Now - on to the fun stuff!
2007 SPECIALIZED TRI CROSS COMP FROM RASMUSSEN BIKE SHOP

PAUL VARNUM
Oakley Prize Pack: Marty Doane
Rasmussen Bike Shop Nutrition Pack: Brad Patty
Rassmussen Bike Shop Cyclocross Pit Cleaning Kit: Reed Rinderknecht

At this point, the Godfathers and the Cross Mafia bid you farewell...until
2007... watch out.

A nice sunny day. Decent temperatures. A raffle for a good cause. And
some great exciting racing. What more could you ask for? :)
Thanks to everyone who came out and volunteered, raced, and spectated.
It was great to see so many come out, and the efforts by everyone
getting this together definitely showed!

Once again, we can't seem to get any cooperation from the weather. The
trails will most likely still be a little too wet to ride on this
Saturday. Because the weather will continue to get colder as the year
progresses, we've decided to postpone the clinic until spring of 2007.
Stayed tuned for the date and additional details. The postponement
means that we'll have more time for planning, collecting more schwag
and it will give us a little more time to hone our clinic giving
skills. So overall, it should be an even better event than originally
planned!
Thanks again for all of the interest and stay tuned to this site for
further info.
