What a beautiful day for a bike race. A bit cool in the morning, but
you couldn't ask for much more on this April Fools Day. In stark
contrast to last year when we had 40+ mph winds (or so it felt), this
year was great - little to no wind at all. This made for some pretty
exciting racing, with each race coming down to a bunch sprint up the hill.

We had a great turnout as well, with over 150 total riders taking the
start. I know I'll be missing someone, but a true thanks to the
Andersons and All 9 Yards.com for putting on such a great event, for
the sheriff's department for providing support, and for all the
volunteers!

Altoona Road Race
April 1, 2006
154 riders
-------------------------

Race 1 (Masters 40/50, Cat. 4/5, Women, Jrs)
The first race of the day saw the Masters 40/50 group take off, with
the 4/5's following 2 minutes later, and then the Women and Jrs 2
minutes after that. Todd Black (ICCC) showed some early energy by
rolling off the front of the main 40/50 group for the first two laps.
With the 4/5s staying together as a pack as well, it was inevitable
that the Masters be caught, and with 5 laps to go both groups were
combined into one, with nearly 56 riders altogether. Not to be
outdone, Josh Madson (ICCC) took the reigns by coming through slightly
ahead of the group the next two laps, with Kelly Steele (ICCC)
slightly out front with 2 laps to go. With 55 other riders on their
heels, these "breakaways" were short-lived and with 1 lap to go the
entire group was back togethers, making for a free-for-all to the
finish. In the end, ICCC continued to show their strength with Nathan
Moenck (ICCC) taking the sprint followed closely by 50+ strong-man Tom
Eaton (Central IA Cycling Club) and Curt Long (MRT). In the 40+ range,
Scott Wall (DMOS) found himself coming across first (7th in the group)
edging out James Hopson (ICCC) to take the Masters 40+ honors.

The Women's race would play out in similar fashion, with an initial
group of 12 women keeping the pace high, led by Pam Hinton (Columbia
Bike Club) for the first few laps. This group would shed a few more
riders over the next lap with both Hinton and Jane Reissen (ICCC)
coming through first with one lap to go. Current Iowa Cup leader
Amanda Miller (Altas/Core) would play her cards right, however, and
with a strong uphill sprint to the finish went on to take the win over
Reissen and Hinton, with Julie Zierke-Clark (DMOS) coming in fourth.

Race 2 (Pro/1/2/3)
The second race of the day contained a race within the race, with the
Cat 3's not only eligible for the overall prize list, but also
eligible for their own prize list as well - giving them incentive to
see if they could stay with a very strong group. This race definitely
showed its regional popularity, with a numerous riders making the trip
from MN, WI, SD, NE, and ND. The same "pack" mentality would find
itself in this race, just as it had in the morning's races, with the
main group never letting anyone get too far ahead.

Tone Coughlin (Lake Superior Cycling), Chad Vandelune (All 9 Yards.com
Cycling), and Brian Eppen (ICCC) each would take their turns leading
the pack through during the early laps. With 4 laps to go however,
Dave Lippold (Central IA Cycling) found himself with a gap and made a
strong go at it. With 3 laps to go John Olney (ICCC) and Andy
Cornelison (Hot Tubes) had bridged up to Lippold and the three of them
would stay of the front for the next two laps. Terry Beenken
(Bianchi/Grand Performance) had seen enough however, and with the help
of Lou Waugamen (Team Mack) and Tim Farnham (Team Kaos), everything
was brought back together with one lap to go.

As with the first race, it was down to whomever could get themselves
up the hill first. Eric Morcastle (Bianchi/Grand Performance) would
reward Beenken's earlier work by taking the win just ahead of Andrew
Kruse (Nature Valley/Penn Cycles), with Cornelison rebounding from his
earlier efforts to take third. Jim Cochran (Atlas/Core) was able to
find his climbing legs by not only taking the top honors in the Cat. 3
level, but also would finish fourth overall.

I've had a couple of people ask, so thought I'd post a message...

If you register for the Old Capitol Criterium or Iowa City Road Race
online, you can elect to pay with Cash/Check (you are not required to
pay with credit card or PayPal).

If you do select Cash/Check, you may either mail the check in or pay
the day of the race when you show up.

You will still need to sign the standard USAC waiver when you pick up
your number at registration, however the waiver will already be filled
out and completed, so all we'll need is your signature and proof of
license.

The advantages to pre-registering (even if you do select Cash/Check)
is that it gets the release form filled out for you, it gets you into
the registration/start list/results system, it reduces your wait time
at registration, and it saves you $5 (assuming you do it before April
20th).

So basically if you know you're going to race, it's better to register
online even if you don't want to pay until raceday.

Thanks - hope this helps!

Hi Mark, Lane, etc.

USAC still requires a real signature for race entries. Faxed or electronic
signatures aren't valid for USAC events. Anybody doing online sign up
still has to turn in a signed original to the promoter.

USAC has new standard entry & release for 2006 which has to be used. They
made substantial changes in the wording on the release.

i did engage in a spiritual retreat of sorts, on one occasion, and

greetings, all--
1--what time does cyclingnews.com live coverage of tomorrow's classic
begin? and what is that in american time?
2--the races here in central park, and elsewhere in the city, begin at
630 am eastern time. that, i have learned, is 530 am according to the
holsteins back at the orphanage. i have not witnessed any racing in nyc.
3--on a related note, to fans of the allman brothers, and those
knowledgeable of their run at the beacon theatre: after starting on an unreal
high
note, i have seen the shows and the music get better and better over the
course of the past three weeks. the papers are referring the boys "killin' it
nightly" at the beacon. last night, after coming to catch some shows over the
years, bruce willis joined the band to blow harp in a searing rendition of
"the sky is crying" and--get this--he was actually VERY good. and even better,
totally cool about the experience. not show-boating or hogging the limelight
as some of the guests did [read leslie west and gary rossington]. VERY
good. and the night just got better and better. the band turned "the weight"
into a gospel experience, with susan tedesci on guitar and vocals, and ron
hardaway on saw. wow. the drum "solo" lasted nearly 25 minutes alone earlier
in the set. EVERYone is on fire here. the closer, whippin' post, was hands
down the best i've ever seen them play.
rumors are rampant that eric clapton will appear before the run ends
sunday. he'd be a fool to miss the chance.

rick, thanks for the slightly off topic post, but i know there are a few
folks who really will be happy to hear this.
and i look forward to tomorrow's action in the park. those of you who
need to start looking over your shoulders should look over your shoulders
tomorrow. those folks are gaining on you.
     good luck, all.
oh, and i've received personal instructions and blessings at the hand of
the bike blesser out here. man, what a trip...

What a beautiful morning for a Kent Park race. For the first time in a
few years there was no wind, no rain, and it was above freezing - all
on the same day!! Of course the result to this was that the race did
not break apart as much as it had in the past either.

After a "categorized" mass start, the race quickly evolved into 3 main
groups with other riders spread throughout in between and behind. The
first group started out with about 40 riders, followed by a second
group of about 30 riders, with another group of about 15 riders
forming after this as well.

With 4 laps to go, Kurt Refsnider (All 9 Yards.com) and John Meehan
(ICCC) had managed to gain a few seconds on the main pack, with Jim
Cochran (Atlas/Core) bridging up to join them by the 3 to go mark.

With these three riders each representing different teams, they
quickly saw their lead grow and with 1 lap to go it was going to be a
question of who was gong to be freshest of these three. In the end it
came down to a very close uphill sprint between Refsnider and Cochran,
with Refsnider just taking the win on the outside.

The lead pack would essentially stay together the rest of the way,
with Brian Eppen (ICCC) and Chad Vandelune (All 9 Yards.com) escaping
with 2 laps to go to hold on to 4th and 5th overall. This lead pack
would find themselves taking the top 37 places in the overall,
including the top 40+ rider - Greg Duethman (ICCC) - and the top 50+
rider - Tom Eaton (Central Iowa CC), the top Cat. 4 rider - Robert
Thompson (Atlas/Core).

In the Women's race, a strong group watched each other throughout the
race, with the end result coming down to a 4-up march up the hill.
Amanda Miller (Atlas/Core) would find the line first to take the win
with Kim Eppen (ICCC) and Anne Meyer (ICCC) both close on her heals.

A very special thank you goes out to Conn Day, Bridget Day, Michael
Edwards, and Jason Weldon for their work and efforts in making this
event happen.

***A few notes on the results...
- Unfortunately we were unable to obtain accurate results for riders
finishing 20-29 overall. We have confirmed placements for some, but
not all. Through deductive reasoning, interviewing, and reconstructive
efforts, we feel confident in who the riders were that finished within
this range. Rather than guess who finished ahead/behind the confirmed
placements we do have, I have elected to list each of these riders as
20th, with the next confirmed rider (Paul Deninger) placing where we
had him in the recordings. This had a potential impact on the "winner"
of the Cat. 5 group. With the lack of concrete evidence available, it
was announced at the race that Jeff Dullard was awarded the Cat. 5
winner. My apologizes for any confusion and for not being able to get
this group as accurately as I would have liked.

Just a few notes regarding Sunday's race.
The park will open at 7:00 am and you will be asked to park in designated lots.
There will be a park ranger and volunteers directing you as to where to park.
If you may need to leave during the race for some reason, please park in the
lower lots that are not on the course.

Race start time is 8:30 am.

You will be given your number at registration and if anyone needs a one day or
annual license renewal you can do that there too. If you don't want your race
number after the race is over, please turn it back in and we will recycle it.
Thanks!

There will be an overall male and female award (sort of a trophy). The overall
winners and individual category winners will be put in a drawing for a $50
Scheels gift certificate. For all other riders there will be a raffle for two
$25 Scheels gift certificates. There will also be the usual beer, pies and
baked goods.

Hope for nice weather, ride safe and please, thank Mark Guthart for being our
ref!

Thank you,
Bridget Day

Anybody else think the distances for masters are
really short in the RR. It's lame for a na champ race.
I'm not saying that it would be easy. I just think
traditionally a RR should be longer.

To try and alleviate congestion at registration for Altoona, if you know you are
racing the spring RR next Saturday, please take a moment to complete the
following registration form and fax to (515) 727-1892, email to
lane@..., or mail (by Monday) to Lane Anderson 215 14th St SW Altoona,
IA 50009.

Don't send money, pay the day of the event.

Don't forget to write the category you are entering in the "races/activities
entered" section of the form. (why USACycling phrased it that way instead of
"category" is beyond me)

Details can be found at www.ALL9Yards.com, Click on the "Bike Race Weekend"
button on the left.

I included the Entry Form with this email.

Thanks for your concerns Paul. I know for the race I'll be hosting, I
haven't given one thought about "possible legal problems" funny though
in today's sissy-fied society one probably should:) You mean there is
more to this than just a bike, city streets, common sense and a day to
day reality that some dumb arse could possibly drive his car off the top
level of a parking garage in a glorified attempt at suicide and just
happen to land on my unlucky arse pedaling down Grand? Man that is
seriously deep and pushing the "what if factor" how does one take this?

Just wondering aloud here (seriously, I'm not poking at any bears) but
has
anyone addressed the possible legal (not to mention image) problems that
this
type of race could create?
Maybe I've got the wrong impression of what this race is supposed to be;
but
the videos of urban races posted here awhile back made me shudder. That
might
be a costly image to live with when the car you cut off happens to be a
state
senator (anyone remember that little episode?)

Have fun but please ride safely guys...

Mable,

You are not going to win Trans-Iowa with an "easy moderate pace." Where
is the Lane "Stiffler" Anderson language? (it's on like donkey kong) We
did not suit you up in a fancy new team kit for you to ride Ragbrai
pace. That will take you all week!

Squirrel - you just tell Basso to hang on to your wheel and he will be
fine!!! Good luck. Do under 4:30 and bring home the course record.

Swine King

Thanks for your concerns Paul. I know for the race I'll be hosting, I
haven't given one thought about "possible legal problems" funny though
in today's sissy-fied society one probably should:)
You mean there is more to this than just a bike, city streets, common
sense and a day to day reality that some dumb arse could possibly drive
his car off the top level of a parking garage in a glorified attempt at
suicide and just happen to land on my unlucky arse pedaling down Grand?
Man that is seriously deep and pushing the "what if factor" how does one
take this?
Simply put I'm too busy living on the edge and in the now to possibly
be worried of or thinking of what possibly could happen in the near
future:) Give us some credit brutha:) Des Moines..... not New York!!

Peace

Just wondering aloud here (seriously, I'm not poking at any bears) but
has
anyone addressed the possible legal (not to mention image) problems that
this
type of race could create?
Maybe I've got the wrong impression of what this race is supposed to be;
but
the videos of urban races posted here awhile back made me shudder. That
might
be a costly image to live with when the car you cut off happens to be a
state
senator (anyone remember that little episode?)

Have fun but please ride safely guys...

Looking to buy a used road bike in the 58cm size. Price range is
negotiable. Prefer something new enough to at least have index shifting.

I'm posting this for a friend looking to upgrade from a hybrid to a road
bike. Email me at: mikebaker1975 at yahoo dot com

Thanks,

Mike Baker
