About 10 years ago I got pulled over by a state trooper in NW Davenport on
Hwy 130 - Ridgeview for impeding the flow. He was nice enough and admitted
that I was legally OK, just did not understand why I didnt ride on the bike
path where it was 'safe'. A few days earlier he had been first on the scene
in Walcott where a sleeping pickup driver crossed both lanes and slammed
into a woman on her bike. I suppose that was part of his motivation to stop
me.

Not quite as interesting as Motorist vs. Courier, but sad to say the
least...

Riding into work yesterday AM on the Moline side on my fixed gear.
One vehicle ahead of me also was required to stop at the red light. I
was soft pedaling and anticipating the light. I heard a honk and a
rev of an engine; it was an on-duty officer pointing at me from his
squad car. Once the light turned green I was pulled over with
lights…. Ah I like lights. Reminded me of Hampton. 8-) (Last year
Dr. S, Mike F. and myself were pulled over for riding on the road...
The officer figured we should be on the bike path practicing paceline
TT at 30+ MPH with stop signs ever 10 feet)

Reason for the stop, I was "impeding the flow of traffic," mainly him
as no cars were behind him. This is a very short block both light
being red. Pedestrian cross walk extends into the road (he felt I
should move over as he was behind me and I guess walk across the
sidewalk, or do a table top with a fixed gear… now that would be
gnarly) I pointed out the reasons I was not able to move over,
including the 3 parked cars with a potential for pedestrians walking
out onto the road way or opening of doors, along with a red light, and
limited width lane entering the intersection as reasons I was riding
in the road. Never mind my legal right. I am going to email his
platoon officer and asking for some training and understanding of the
rights of cyclist, as I believe this is a training issue. He looked a
bit shocked when I was able to point out multiple reasons for my
riding position (ok my back wasn't flat as it should be but I was
caring my backpack with my cloths and lunch for the day.) I will say
he didn't try to run me over, unlike Hampton, and was polite. I fully
believe he felt we should be riding on or near the sidewalk and
dismount when cars were near. I would have liked to argue the
"impeding the flow of traffic" was the light, as no traffic was coming
on 7th Ave., however some how I didn't think he would find the humor
so I left that out.

Would be nice if this officer (badge 2048) would be allowed as a bike
patrol for some extra training to get a bicyclist perspective of
traffic, nice young officer who was in shape. Too bad more
communities don't have bike patrols to learn some experience from our
shoes.

Just wondering if others have had issue with the law regarding our
rights to ride in the road or similar run-ins?

Keeping the rubber side down, and the cops hot on my tail!

Oh ya... PS We had a very little Son Ethan born 1-15-06, doing great.
So as soon has he passes his Tricycle test what out on the sidewalks
at races!

Motorist vs. Courier

Motorist throws food out of window. Courier, disliking littering, picks up
food and throws food back in car. Motorist dumps coffee on courier. Courier
scratches car with key. Road rage ensues.

---
note about the Cedar Falls rarified air.
34 raced at Cedar Falls
27 of those raced at least 2 races this year.
19 of those had their season best times.

Maybe the Cedar Falls rec center has some secret oxygen generators.

---
We had 2 roller racers upgrade during the roller season:
Mike Blahut & Jake Stocking.
As with past policy, their previous times don't upgrade with them.

While Hopson and gpickle were doing their epic rides, I participated
in Ken Lefler's first annual I.C.C.E.T.I.T. I [Iowa City's Cult
Electric Tour in Tights I] this well organized grueling ride started
in the bitter cold from Ken and Lu Lefler's on the same day as
Brrrr. Approximately ten of us were heading out in the elements for
the first leg of our epic journey. The brutal wind had the pack
separated before we were half way to our first stop The American
Legion Hall. The smoke filled shack was extremely difficult on our
lungs after riding nearly one mile in sub 20 temperatures.

We took the well deserved rest stop with numerous pitchers, and some
conversations with local euchre player. The common question wee
encountered was, "Where are you coming from?" We all laughed when
replying, about 5 blocks away.

Our next stretch would be almost as difficult as our first. I put
on my "Loren Suit" and we were of to another local bar
Shakespeare's. (My Loren suit is a pair of insulted mechanics
coveralls I found in the ditch on a road ride. I carried them home
under my arm, and they were a perfect fit. The name "Loren" is
embroidered neatly on the pocket). I mounted my cross bike and
assumed a beautiful aerodynamic position…coasting…coasting…
coasting…..Yes, I did it! I "road" all the way from the American
Legion to Shakespeare's without a single pedal revolution.
Exhausted from this leg of the journey we spent a couple of hours
drinking pitchers, playing pool, and replenishing our depleted
bodies with cheese fries, chicken wings, and other greasy bar food.
We need to do a little carbo loading for the next stint of the day.

We left Shakespeare's knowing that the most difficult stretch was
ahead, a nearly three mile uphill battle into a nipping headwind to
the Hilltop Tavern. We cut through the Iowa City cemetery and then
it was only two more blocks to the Tavern. We all made it without
any flats, nor rest stops!

I had never seen the Hilltop so beautiful; the late afternoon sun
was shinnying in the eastern windows illuminating all of the second
had smoke. I had a tear in my eye from the picturesque moment, or
all the smoke. Again we ate some Crisco based food, shared some
pitchers, played pool against some Texas rednecks, and listened to
some outstanding tunes in the Jukebox.

Darkness had stuck upon us, or I was near passing out while we
coasted down the nearly 1.5 miles to George's Bar. Things start to
get a little fuzzy at this point of the day, but we had a few more
beers, maybe some food.

Next we rode to Ken and Lu's old neighborhood down near Fin &
Feather. "Pauly", Ken's Friend, was working on a little rental unit
("The Skidder") in the area and had filled a cooler full of Busch
Light for out visit. We stood around in true Brrr fashion, drinking
crummy beer in funny winter cycling clothing.

A few of us started back toward Ken and Lu's house which would
complete our epic trek around Iowa City. We stopped at RT's for a
few beers and shots of Jägermeister (Never a good idea). When
Leaving RT's the group was really scattered amongst the last stops
and taking different routes back to Ken and Lu's. I crashed on the
railroad tracks, and then got up to ride the remaining 2.5 miles to
the finish line. "Adversity overcome!" (gpickle, 2006).

It was quite a day! Hope to see some of you for ICCETIT II

P.S. My wife says I am grounded.

The lighting in the cracker warehouse was pretty bad for photography so I
tried something different. 1 second exposures. Makes everyone look like
really fast or like a double amputee.

If you want, I can email you directly the original large scale image

Landon,
The bibs are mine. They are in a size Tracy of the smaller version. I knew
I had left them in the loft but hadn't got around to calling you. Now that
my son let a red crayon go through the dryer, I really need them, and some
advice on how to get the red crayon out of the dryer.

Thanks!

well, now gpick--

Today we discovered a pair of bibs in the dark recesses of The
Appliance Barn loft. If you are missing a pair let me know and we will
figure out how to get them to you. You must identify them and the only
only clue is that it says Atlas on them.
Any takers?

A recent request for this prompted me to ask the local coordinators if any
were doing this despite the guidelines in the rulebook. Best response so
far follows:

Hi everyone, a few of us in the office have noticed that some riders have
been downgraded to category 5. I would like to remind everyone that per our
categorization guidelines (page 172, 2004 USCF rulebook, last line),
downgrading to category 5 is not allowed. Alas, at some point, a rider
might reach a place where he is a poor enough cyclist that he will just
have to lose and lose ugly. The fact that someone is not competitive at
category 4 is an indication that the rider is facing that reality. Category
5 is for novices. Novice status is like virginity -- You can't get it back
once you have lost it. We have tried to see that a rider cannot
self-downgrade to 5 via the GRS system. Please see to it that it does not
happen out in the field. Thank you.

The other half of the story.

Not nearly as well attended as Rick's 17th (or therebouts') annual IC to
Brr ride was gpickle's 1st annual DM to IC ride which occured the Sunday
after Brr. I did not go to Brr this year, I was in Des Moines for the Iowa
Bicycle Summit and Donut Eating contest. I did not witness the Donut
Eating contest but at the gala dinner that night it was easy to tell that
Mr. Schwinn had won it! He was just lucky Eppen wasn't there.....

So I rode from Des Moines back to Iowa City. I do not have NEARLY as much
to say about my ride as Rick did about his but this was my first ride. Be
patient! In 2023 (or therebouts') I too plan to write an epic saga about
my many rides from Capital City to the Old Capital and the weather
patterns, interpersonal relationships and component failures that made them
suck or not. To the report, then!

I left Des Moines at 9 am sharp and the temperature was 14F. My long time
legal counsel and designated sprinter Kim told me to just ride out
University for 20 miles or so to Prairie City and then use the smaller,
quieter roads. Just what I did, too. I don't know when the last time was
Kim did this, but to any of you kids out there I would urge another route.
The speed limit steadily increased until I was riding on a divided 4 lane
road posted at 65 miles per. Unpleasant! I made it to Prairie City,
missed my turn, rode through a big ditch and made it to Caseys. Stopped in
to replace the brick of ice in my bottle with water and was on my way. I
got lost, wound up on gravel, saw a water tower really far away, rode
towards it to get an idea of where I was, found comfort when I got close
enough to it to see that I was in IOWA. Crud. Rode back the other way,
still on gravel, got chased by some dogs, my bikes shifting sucked, the
gravel was rough and roads were hilly. I worried I was going to break my
chain but did not want to stop and fix the shifting as it was still very
cold. Got on pavement!
Started rolling and figured out where I was in no time. Pavement was quite
bumpy for a time but then it got smooth again. Adversity overcome! made
it to Montezuma and stopped at the K&G for lunch. Spent about 20 minutes
eating and getting warm. The cashier told me I was crazy as I was leaving.
In all the time I had been sitting there she never once questioned the
sanity of the tobacco buyers or the folks putting $40.00 worth of gas in
their StupidUselessVehicles. I hit the road and upped the pace a bit to
stay warm. It worked. Made it to Parnell at 3 and was feeling swell so I
slowed some and made it into Iowa City at 4:30. ISB&T showed me that it
was 27F. I HAD DONE THE IMPOSSIBLE! Err.... Well, I had made it home and
bagged my first century of the year. I took a shower, had dinner, etc.
This story has to end sometime and this seems as good a time as
any. Thanks for reading!

The Prairie Rude Days RR will be this Sunday Feb. 26 at 10:00 am. Sure it is
suppose to be cold and windy but you must ask yourself, "What would George do"?
(wwgd) Registration will be at 9:00 on the College Community School campus.
Take exit #13 off I380 and go to 4 way light and go north to 76th avenue. Go
right on 76th and registration will be in the Prairie Crest parking lot (2nd
parking lot).
Race is a multiple lap technical course for a total of 22 miles. Cost is $13.
Usual pie, beer and baked goods awards. This year we ask if you pay by check
please make it payable to Two Bee Racing unless you use your entry for a tax
deduction you may still write it to Miracles In Motion. All our proceeds will
still go to this great charity. It easier and more cost effective for them to
receive less checks.
Note of interest: the course will be swept using a big honking piece of
machinery provided by Bobcat of Cedar Rapids. As we Bees say ride slowly and
carry a big broom!

Here it is! The highly anticipated annual report of the ride from Iowa
City to Perry for BRR.

Preface:

Long term readers of the bikeiowa.ORG email list will know that every
February a certain Iowa City area resident makes his annual trek from Iowa
City to Perry, Iowa for the annual event known as BRR or Bike Ride to
Rippey. But unlike the other several thousand BRR participants who haul
their bicycles to Perry in their suvs, cars or old school buses and mostly
hang out in the bars, this person rides his bicycle. No matter what the
weather or road conditions or who the companions.

If you would like to get up to speed, previous accounts are waiting for
list members in the Yahoo bikeiowa.org message archives:

To Kill A MockingBrr: BRR ‘06

Another BRR has come and gone, gentle reader. No big news to report,
fortunately, or unfortunately for you if you were waiting for tales of
suffering or adventure. I still live, with 10 toes still intact, unfrozen
(albeit 6 on the left and 4 on the right, same as always), and I am not
being fitted for a brass nose or other prosthesis for an amputated, icy
extremity. The binH BRR Report has become an eagerly awaited (or not) ride
report, I think in large part because vicarious suffering has become one of
the more entertaining types of reading. Jon Krakauer may have the corner
on the "frostbite-among-friends" genre, but seriously, I think I got there
first. (Just to cement my genre ownership, my next novella: “Into Thin
Spare: A Tale of Desperate Flat Repair and Angst in the Age of STI). Over
the years I have offered humble details (with the exception of least year…
sorry) about wind-ripped, icy flesh, grey, fetid snot-cicles, desperate
races with wind-blown trash cans, and painful rewarming of toes on the
revolving wiener displays at Casey's from Marengo to Minburn. I have
ridden through blizzards to the concern of passing motorists and delight of
radio listeners, suffered all-day riding at 10 mph while doing battle with
gale-force winds. I have showered with my bike in the Mid-Iowa Motel in
Newton so that both of us would be thawed enough to ride the next day.

But lately I fear the ride has developed a sense of predictability. Sure,
it remains long, cold, and somewhat dreary, as we would like it to be, but
what could happen that has not already been endured and reported? There
were rides, albeit some years ago, when success and survival were not
always so certain. In these early years I took a tent and a sleeping bag
in case I was forced to bivouac in a ditch. I carried extra food, candles,
fire starter, and a shiny safety blanket. I brought foot warmers, battery
powered socks, and 20 lbs of extra clothing. And I rode my beastly,
unliftable, touring bike with front and rear panniers to carry the
load. These days I take my Litespeed, a cell phone, and a credit
card. Rosanne, my dear and infinitely understanding wife, no longer fusses
before I leave. Not even a little bit. For the first half dozen BRR rides
however Mrs. binH was occasionally fussy, more than often irritable, and
occasionally visibly (quite) upset, as I would be making preparations to
go. With time, albeit over many years, she was worn down and eventually
numbed to the event, and came to offer little resistance. Her anxiety was
re-stoked by a call one winter from Carol Winniford, as her husband, Mike
(aka binW, bin Whinin’, bin Bonkin’, “Mez! MOVE LEFT!!”, Dr. Magellan, The
“Flat King”, and “Mississippi Churning”, “Captain Bonk”, and “Prince of
Wheel Suck”) was scheduled to ride on a Thursday many years ago. On the
eve of the ride Mike had his bike plucked from the launch pad by Carol when
it began snowing heavily Wednesday night. T-minus 8 hours and
holding. About a foot came down that evening, and the risk of the ride,
now quite obvious and exposed by Carol, lay naked in front of Rosanne. The
unspoken message… “Carol loves her husband, what about you Rosanne?”. The
answer might easily have been “no”, or “well, let me think about it”, but
not wanting to be shown up, she decided to fuss. There was fuss, followed
by considerable discussion, before I left on Thursday morning. Fortunately
the snow plows had been out all night and lent a sense of order and
civility to the scene in front of the house, making my departure seem less
Iditabike-ish than it looked to be 8 hours previously. And the ride as it
turned out was quite nice. (Mike, on the other hand, did not fare as well,
and was at some length directed by Carol to move to
Mississippi. Mississippi is one of the few states that makes snow look
good.) The high point of marital distress occurred before I left one
evening for BRR, I think it was in '94, when the temperature was -31°, and
the predicted high the next day was going to be -15°. Rosanne argued,
baited, discussed, and then at some length, sobbed softly as she watched me
pack. As I suited up for departure (I looked, quite frankly, like a
cosmonaut preparing for a space walk) she paraded the children by “to say
goodbye to their father, who they would likely never see again” (sniff,
sniff) in a thawed condition. As it would turn out they would see him
again in only about 3 hours, as my freewheel froze solid in Coralville,
ending my trip with a long and embarrassing walk home.

But that was the worst it has been in a long while. There have since been
minor weather challenges, diversions, and little hints of adventure, but
nothing that pushes either the danger gauge or the DNF meter into the
red. And such was the case this year. The ride attendance this year
swelled to 5 (a record), at least for the first day, with me, Scott
Campbell, Rob, Nenninger, Kim (in charge of the sag wagon and so riding
only to Oxford) and Brian Eppen leaving from my house on Thursday AM. A
decision had been made, how and by who still debated, to ride fixed gear
bikes the whole way. Mr. Campbell was clearly a major proponent, as he
seems intent on re-writing the cycling ledger in fixed gear font, starting
with BRR, but with aims on RAGBRAI, then on to brevets and even perhaps
PBP. God bless him, and all other chaffed, demented fools like
him. Although I doubt there are any. Frankly, I think he has been
spreading too much chamois butter on his toast. But however it happened,
here we were, chumps, following his lead like fixed gear sheep bleating
and stumbling our way out of town. Ryan demonstrated some common sense and
rode his new team bike (14 lbs, but only with 4 lbs of nickels taped to the
seat tube). I made him promise to stick to just one gear, and he responded
by shifting at least 20 times by the time we reached the end of the
block. Campbell and Eppen were fixed (as were their bikes), while Rob was
riding a 42x16 freewheel SS, not admitting to owning a track hub. Smart
man. I had a fixed 16t cog, but brought a 16t freewheel on the flip side
of the hub just in case. As most of your know, I’m pretty dumb, but in a
prepared sort of way. I had ridden the fixed wheel only once before, about
20 miles the week previous, but didn't seem to have any serious problems
(aside from being pitched clean off the bike twice when I tried to itch my
arse). So although I doubted that anything seriously would go wrong I
brought the freewheel just to cover unlikely possibilities.

Well, one thing that went wrong was, MY FREEKIN KNEES STARTED TO ROT AWAY!
even by the time we got to Oxford. The downhills were absolute killers. I
would get gapped on each descent, with my low cadence style that has always
served me well (until now), and the action of the downhill on my knees was
rapidly tearing them apart. The flats into Marengo offered some relief,
but I could feel some residual discomfort which had me concerned, as I
never get knee pain. I also knew the road was going to start to pitch up
and down again after Victor, and so I chose to flip the wheel to the 16t SS
freewheel side at Marengo. Man, what a relief! Some of the improvement
might have been psychological, as both the pain and the tears resolved very
quickly even though I didn't coast until Ladora, but who cares, I felt
better. Eppen and Campbell stayed fixed all the way to Altoona (and to
this day for all I know), and seemed comfortable even with the long,
rolling hills between Grinnell and Newton... I suspect they are mindless,
crotch-rotted, spinning robots with titanium knee replacements.

Despite my trials, suffering, and distress with both drivetrain and knees,
the biggest problem that first day was with Rob. He was riding an
old-school Trek road bike that had been re-assembled as a SS by Joe and me
several years ago. It was, and remains (despite all the Evil decals which
have cropped up, some of which have naughty words) a beautiful bike. The
problem was that Rob had replaced the seatpost with one that was both
slightly too narrow, and which additionally had a very sharp shard of metal
near the seat clamp. To make sure this knife-like piece of metal was
completely exposed, he had put a very nice, cut-away, lightweight,
Ti-railed racing saddle on the post. The piece of metal was wide enough to
stick out beyond the saddle, and positioned just perfectly to poke sharply
at the soft meat of his inner thigh (very close to the sensitive “taint”
region) with each pedal stroke. Within 20 miles this repetitive stabbing
action had worn through his tights, and by Marengo the flesh of his inner
thigh, normally a pale a creamy white (or so Lobster has told me) had taken
on the appearance of potted ham. Red, inflamed, and
moist. Yum. Inspecting the affected area required some discretion as we
sat along the side of busy Hwy 6, but even a quick check revealed the
damage that had been done. There was little in the way of first aid that
was either available or possible at the time, at least without an exam
table, his feet up in stirrups, and some 2-0 Prolene suture. We wrapped
the offending metal blade in an oily rag to prevent further damage and
continued on. The size of the seat post remained a problem however, as it
was 27.0 in a 27.2 seat tube, which allowed it to slowly slide down
regardless of how tight you worked the binder bolt. This left poor Rob
riding in a BMX-type of funk, knees banging on his soft, pouting, February
man-breasts, and now with rivulets of blood running down from his taint
toward his shoes. Not pretty (is he ever?), but goddamn if he didn't
complain even once about any of this until the next day, about 120 miles
later, when we passed a bike shop and asked politely if we might briefly
stop in for a replacement post. By this time it looked as though you had
shot his chamois with a 20-20 load of squirrel guts; it was getting pretty
bad. Needless to say the guys at the shop, seeing the nature of his
distress, made his repair their first priority. Barr Cyclery in
Clive: Stained carpet; good folks.

But back to Thursday… we steamed west along Hwy 6 as best as our 42x16’s
and Rob’s bloody taint would allow. A pretty stiff breeze out of the south
over our left shoulder, but we were able to paceline fairly well as the
traffic was light and drivers by and large considerate. Stop in
Marengo. Food and a wheel flip. Stop in Brooklyn. Food and Rob checking
his voicemail about work. (Incontinence never sleeps, apparently.) Brian
also ate two of the sweaty little wieners that were spinning about on the
rack at the Brooklyn “Piss ‘n Pump”. Another stop in Grinnell, this time
for shortbread and coffee. Brian had soup, as tubes of gut-wrapped lard
were not available. (It is amazing to watch the stuff that goes into that
boys mouth… he is like some sort of legged, cycling shag fish… sucking up
bottom mud and grey water as he steams along… wieners, pop, and gooey stuff
in wrappers from the parking lot. Remarkable. He must have a wonderfully
efficient liver.) Newton and another stop, this time for reasons
unclear. Cuz it was there, dammit. Final stop chez Hopson in Altoona.

Mrs. Gramma binH was, as usual, a pleasant and warm host. Cheese, wine, a
hot shower, and, as per tradition, ample “butter for our ample
bottoms”. She has consistently made this offer of rump-lube each year we
have been staying there, I guess because it seems intuitive to her that we
would be suffering, dermatologically, after such an effort, and in a
motherly way has always made an offer of a salve for the chamois-area part
of the overnight package. Although bin W had previously been a consistent
fan of the “bottom butter”, Rob and I have learned to avoid my mother’s
offer of chafe relief. This year however, weakened by 120 miles of
maceration and shredded taint meat, Rob relented and at some length
accepted bottom butter. As it turned out bottom butter is a combination of
witch hazel and alcohol, and he was wracked by stinging and searing pain
all night long.

After pancakes and coffee the next morning we were off. On Friday we were
joined by a high school buddy of mine from DM who had, foolishly as it
turned out, driven out from Des Moines the night before to join in the
“fun”. And indeed it all seemed so innocent, warm and inviting around the
wine bottle the night before. Just 4 inches on the DOT map; a simple ride
to Altoona; butter for your bottom; wine in your belly. The weather report
promised that, even though 20° chillier than the day before, it was to
remain temperate by February standards. But a “bit of a breeze” was
promised.

The teeth of this “breeze” (aka torrent-gale) were bared only when we got
through DM and on to the bike trail heading west to Waukee. Trees were
blown and tossed like broccoli in a Japanese stir-fry. Semis were off in
the ditch. Trains tipped over. Grain bins hurled about like a discarded
cans of PBR. It was to be a desperate final 30 miles to Perry from the end
of the trail. The landscape of Iowa changes dramatically from summer to
winter, and without the corn or a blade of grass anywhere to serve as
buffer or block, the wind blasts without impediment from Canada all the way
to Perry (funneled more or less directly it would seem), where it lurks
waiting for a fatigued cyclist, weakened and anemic from a bloody
taint. And so it found us steaming slowly along an unprotected and lonely
country road, and sprung out at 35+ mph, and choked us to within an inch of
our sanity.

42x16 was a smidge too small on Thursday, and was waaay too big on Friday,
but because I am a low rpm grinder without any spinning skills anyway it
was not a serious problem. Scott turned his wheel around after his
pancake, before we left my parents house, so he stayed fixed but was now
42x18. Clever. Rob, unfortunately, had to stick with his 42x16, and is
not blessed with an aerodynamic riding style; he suffered all day on Friday.

And despite all that, Rob did well, as he always seems to do. It was my
buddy John who suffered. His first BRR; mentally unprepared; legs softened
by wine the night before. He made it to Dallas Center, but just barely,
and on arrival had the expression of a man who had just eaten a fresh dog
turd. A big, steamy, shiny one, with the blades of grass still stuck
on. Rob, our team spokes model and always ready with a kind word,
announces, “Can't take the heat, John? Well, get out of the place where
the heat may possibly be located!”

Heat was not our problem. The safe refuge of Mudder’s Bar in Minburn was
only 8 miles distant, and Perry only another 12 beyond that. We were
almost there, mileage-wise, but we discovered that converting distance to
clock time uses a different multiplier in February when the wind picks
up. When we arrived in Minburn John was emotionally spent. Shot. He
looked mostly OK physically, but from the frozen spittle on his cheek and
the way he tore pathetically at his ration of Beer Nuts we were concerned
that he was not going to survive the final leg into Perry. He certainly
was not going to make it by nightfall, and he had chosen not to bring a
light. At that moment a RAGBARI team (“Team Spleen”, “The Upchuckers”,
“Team Scrotum”… can't remember just who they were) pulled in and assumed
station at the bar. John recovered enough strength to request a ride with
them, and after a short “team initiation ceremony” (which as I recall
involved chicken blood, a can of Bud Light, several slices of lunch meat,
and some rhythmic chanting), he was “good-to-go”. (I was told a tattoo of
some sort would follow once he arrived in Perry.) Rob, Scott, and I were
off, leaving John resting with his head propped against the ample and
inviting chest of one of his new teammates, sipping a cranberry vodka from
her cycling shoe.

The Hotel Pattee was as inviting as always. Luxurious; warm; opulent. It
is indeed a wonderful place. Also a smidge pricey, depending on how deep
into the wine cellar you drop your hook, but there are some nice fish down
there which make it tempting. There were several room cancellations, I
guess due to the “inclement weather”, wind I am guessing, and Rob bailed on
my offer of the bathtub to take up residence in the Tuba Room. After about
3 hours I got a call from John that “Team DogBite”, or whatever, was still
at Minburn. The good news was that they were to be leaving shortly,
“perhaps only in another hour”. The bad news was that they were heading to
Bouton. Another bar, another round. John would be lucky to make it to
Perry by ’07. I found a truck and drove back to Minburn for a rescue.

The “official” BRR Ride was cold and windy, quite unpleasant, as it should
be in keeping with the spirit of the ride. BRR attracts and interesting
mix of riders, most of whom are there to party and mingle with friends, and
many of whom are not equipped, trained, or emotionally prepared for a
distinctly cold ride into a howling, icy, wind. It’s not that far, out and
back, but once you are out of town and the wind has you on the mat, the
warmth of the bar back in Perry calls like a siren. On the way out I could
see folks huddled in circles by the side of the road, a few off the road
behind barns, maybe just taking a break, maybe making a cell phone call for
a lift. There are several “hills” on the way out, perhaps 30 yards of 2%
grade, and there were a few walkers on each of them. It was that
windy. But hey, they were out there hacking along.

Which is what we did this year. Just hacked along on our first single
speed/fixed gear assault on BRR. We had a good time.

And so it was, and reported. Until next year,

Rick H.

As said by,

Rick Paulos
Upgrade Coordinator
Iowa Bicycle Racing Association

`The only place I would like to see mandatory upgrades is the cat 5 to cat
`4. I think a 10-punch-card license should be issued. Once you do your 10,

`you are upgraded. Racing needs a true beginners class. A newbie coming to

`race against a bunch of guys with years of experience will just get them
`blown out, discouraged and they won't come back.

That's the best thing I've ever heard! This could really help to keep new
people involved. How do we propose this to USA Cycling?
