I'll spare you the long story about why I would be interested in such a
torturously boring device.

And I'd obviously like to spend as little as possible procuring one of these
demons.

Thanks in advance for any direct replies.

I ordered a 105 10speed groupo and only needed some of the items and want to
sell off the other stuff. So all this is new and unused in packaging. I will
give everyone round here first shot at and then it will be off to ebay with
the lot.

All 5600 series Shimano 105 10speed stuff:

Asking price, OBO (retail price)

    - Chain - $20.00 ($30)
    - Crank 170mm / BB, 53/39 - $140 ($223)
    - Front Dir, double, braze on
         (I think it came with a adaptor) - $28.00 ($45)

Note on the new 105 stuff: about the same as DA and Ult 10 speed, same
ergonomics and features, only with weight penalty, so 100% interchangeable
between groups. Same exact BB, with different finish. Cranks are that mega
stiff integrated design. Front dir mech is much stiffer then any of the 9
speed stuff.

Caffeine, workouts don't mix, study finds

By Robert Preidt
HealthDay
Jan. 18, 2006 03:27 PM

The amount of caffeine in just two cups of coffee limits the body's
ability to increase blood flow to the heart during exercise,
according to researchers in Switzerland.

The study included 18 young, healthy people who were regular coffee
drinkers. They did not drink any coffee for 36 hours prior to study
testing. The researchers used high-tech PET scans to measure the
participants' heart blood flow before and after they rode a
stationary bike.

They repeated the testing procedure after swallowing a tablet
containing the amount of caffeine equal to two cups of coffee.

The caffeine did not affect heart blood flow when the participants
were inactive. However, measurements taken immediately after
exercise showed a slowdown in heart blood flow after they'd taken
the caffeine tablets, compared to their previous results.

Increased blood flow is necessary to match the increased need for
oxygen during exercise.

The researchers say caffeine may block certain receptors in the
walls of blood vessels, interfering with the normal signaling
process that causes blood vessels to dilate in response to exercise.

The findings appear in Tuesday's issue of the Journal of the
American College of Cardiology.

Thought some of you would want to know. Ben raced for me for several
years. He raced both mountain and road. We called him Ice Boy since his
dad owned Krieg Boys Ice Company.

Benjamin William Krieg, 30, of Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of Dubuque,
Iowa, passed away at home on Wednesday, January 18, 2006. Benjamin was a
graduate of Dubuque Senior High School, attended Hanover College [In.]
and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in business.
While attending the University of Iowa, he was a member of Phi Delta
Theta Fraternity. He did freelance video work for ESPN, the University
of Iowa wrestling program and other programs related to the sport of
college wrestling. He was an avid cyclist , racing in both the Midwest
and Europe. Ben was also well-known in the rock-climbing and
snowboarding world. All of us who knew Ben will always remember him not
only for his drive, imagination and bright red, curly hair but also for
the sheer spark of energy which he brought into every room that he
entered. Ben was born on May 2,1975, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Kathryn
Krieg and David Krieg. Ben is survived by his mother, Kathryn Krieg of
Indianapolis, IN. and his father, David Krieg of Dubuque, Iowa; two

Great letter on www.velonews.com - right on the money (proverbial, not
literal!)!

###

*Yeah, what he said*
Editor:
Pretty benign for a "foaming rant," but right on the money. The team I
belong to, DICE, sponsors a variety of races every year. Another nearby
team, Two Bee Racing, sponsors races virtually year-round. In Iowa, we now
have a cyclo-cross series, a mountain-bike series, and a road-racing points
series. And each one is all about the racing. It's not about big money. It's
not about drawing big names. It's not about drawing spectators. It's all
about a bunch of men and women getting together and racing their bikes.

And tell me, in what other sport might you toe the line at a local race with
a pro like Chris Horner or Jason McCartney, or even Lance Armstrong?

So, no matter how much coverage OLN decides to give the grand tours or the
classics or any race here in the U.S., I think we're succeeding right now.

were inactive.

Agreed, maybe they had less blood flow because the caffeine made the body so
much more efficient that didnąt need all that extra blood. Dr. Burke stated
several studies in his book Science of Cycling that showed increased
endurance/performance from caffeine, he also warned that unless you were
used to the caffeine it could cause dehydration and thus detrimental to your
performance.

Best roller times of the year.

Indianola elev. 970 feet, 5:22.1
Muscatine elev. 585 feet, 5:19.8
Kalona elev. 662 feet 5:20.8
Iowa City elev. 668 feet ????

I doubt the elevation plays into it too much.

Does anyone know who holds all these best times?

See you at Core Fitness in Iowa City on Sunday about 11:00.
