Thanks Rick,
This should help make the list much more managable and less subject to my
"delete" key.
I for one do feel that if I have something worth saying, I should be willing
to attach my name to it.

TRANSIOWA 2005

I have read some of the reasons for DNF's of the TRANSIOWA and
understand there where many challenges up to Algona, but it seems
there has been a lack of understanding of the physical and mental
challenges that occurred after "the 127", so I will try to highlight
a few things that went on during my ride.

Sixteen of us still had 177 more miles to trek on gravel that was not
nearly as "fast-track" friendly as our first 127 miles given that the
extreme cold temperatures of a clear April night combined with sleep
deprivation, more wind, and the ending Decorah hills only added to
the challenge. I know many of you including myself who finished
encountered your own mental and physical challenges throughout the
race (Maybe not Ira, you stud!!!). Signing-up for the TRANSIOWA for
me meant that I was in it for the long-haul even if it meant "looking
like death's hangover." (What were some of the people that signed-up
for this expecting?) Yes, the winds were challenging, but not "the
culprit of our demise." Yes, nutrition and hydration were a
challenge (I survived on less than a hundred ounces to Algona). Yes,
my knees failing to support my weight when I stood to pedal the 8
extra monstrous Decorah hills that we encountered from a navigational
error caused me to almost break into tears. Yes, the bloody spot in
my chamois when I changed in Algona was not a real motivator for the
remaining 177 miles. Yes, watching my teammate Steve G. place hand-
warmers on his nipples held in place by his cycling bibs because of
the 27 degree temps and much colder wind-chills didn't seem normal.
Yes, slamming two GU's at the same time at 3:00 AM when the body was
not excepting more food was the closest I came to vomiting. Yes, it
was difficult pulling myself off the floor of the Cresco Kum-and-Go
after drinking a hot chocolate with eight vanilla creamers and eating
a warm greasy microwave breakfast sandwich. Yes, this ride was an
extreme challenge for me (10% physical and 90% mental), and yes, I am
glad that I could handle the challenge.

A few other random highlights for me were:

I road the whole thing except for running up one ditch after riding
the grassy side of the 2nd B-level, and running my bike out to the
center of the 3rd B-level from the grassy shoulder after we saw
another rider cruising on the packed part of the road.

Our Algona pit-stop was beautiful! Large warm pizza hut pizzas
waiting, gallons of cold drinks, my wife to help prepare me for the
next leg of the journey, chairs to sit on, and good friends to check
our bikes over.

Ira, Brian, Steve, and I were rocking the front of the race on our
cross-bikes, no MP3 player, and no aero bars. It was cool that we
all had ties to Iowa City. I wish I could have kept up with Brian
and Ira, but made a good call to maintain a pace that would allow me
to finish the race.

I enjoyed watching others that were still in the race after "the 127"
who seemed to be cranking along with such ease. Ira and Brain could
ride away from me at any given moment, and they did. Thank you to
Steve who stuck with me and my continual grunts of agony and
complaining.

I enjoyed a happy moment in the Forest City Hardee's while eating a
roast beef sandwich, fries, and a Coke, and observing local prom
couples on their hot night out. Also, I enjoyed watching Brian shove
some type of double cheeseburger value meal in his jersey pocket for
later then quickly hurry off to catch Ira (only about 10 hours left
for them). It was at this point that I told Ira that he could win,
and to leave us. He did.

I was pleased to meet "Dr. Doom" and have a chance to hang out with
him a little, and the camaraderie that was shown between all racers
was uplifting. Thank you to all of you who I had a chance to ride
with!

Sitting on the cat food and dog food bags in Osage was one of the
lower points of the night for Steve. He looked like he was freezing
to death, but with a little longer break, and two fresh hand warmers
on his nipples he was ready to ride.

At 4:00 AM my mind started to wander upon the thought of 6 to 7 more
hours….when will I start to see the light of the sun…I am
freezing….do I need to eat something…why can't I keep my eyes open…
crap, I am falling asleep…wake-up…turn the pedals…wake-up…pedal…shift…
wake-up. I spoke into the darkness, "Steve, I am having trouble
staying awake." He kindly comforted me with, "I don't know what to
say about that." I realized that the reason things were getting
foggier and foggier was that the Gatorade that had exploded out of my
water bottle when the cap came of had gotten on my gloves, and every
time I pushed my clear glasses back to protect my eyes from the cold
wind and dust I was leaving a sticky film on my glasses. This sticky
film started to collect dust and thus was causing me to feel sleepier
than I actually was.

The sunrise was beautiful!

The finish line was beautiful too.

320 miles in 26.5 hours.

Final thoughts:

Jeff and Ted thanks for putting on the race.

Cross-bike vs. Mt. Bike… riders who chose to ride a mountain bike may
have made the right choice if it would have been different
conditions. I am sure those with full suspension or shocks don't
have the muscle spasms that I am having.

Hey Iowa Bikers,

I know that most people want to talk about the weather in some sort of
negative way, not me. You should be living it up. Compare todays weather
in Iowa to our weather in Denver. I moved here last year to what some call
the cycling capital of the world (Denver/Boulder) and have ridden more this
year (so far) than the last two years in Iowa, but not this week. I would
rather be in Iowa enjoying sunny dry riding. Out here I would need to get
out the cyclocross bike, and might. Oh, and the hill climb race this
weekend - forget it.

Sometimes we would all like to live in a place with 300 sunny riding days a
year. Other times we would rather be in Iowa (now). Enjoy what you have and
get out and ride !

Due to popular demand over the past few months some bikeiowa.org list
policies are changed:

: No more anonymous posting. All posters are required to sign their real
name, city and state for each post. Posts not signed will be rejected,
deleted or ignored.

: The list is now set to moderated. Since all posts will now be directed
to my account for approval, there may be some delay in posts being
forwarded to the bikeiowa.org email list. I'll be out of the office the
next 3 days so no posts will go through.

I have received a number of requests regarding the identity of certain
people. I have always stated who is on the list will remain private. Only
the posters will out themselves.

Future changes may be made as needed. Under consideration is reviewing
each post for relevance. Not a job I want. Or possibly removing the
moderated status so annoucements get out in a more timely manner.

Thanks to everyone in Iowa who puts on a race, I don't
care how big or if there's a payout. Racing is more
fun than anything else and I know I'm one of many
willing to pay the entry fee.

Now, I'm going to ride my bike. Just thought I'd let
everyone know. Maybe everyone can send e-mails about
that while sitting at what must be really boring desk
jobs. You can write poetry about it if you're really
bored.

or you could go ride your bike too (or even start
organizing your own race)

peace

I guess the double-entendre and word play were a bit to esoteric for

To all race promoters whether it be road or mtb ya'll wade through more
crap than some of us can imagine, so please don't let those who feel the
need to complain or express their opinion (which we all are entitled
too) get you pissed or wanting to just say fock-it. These are simply
opinions in the form of written words and I'll go to racing the road
full time if you can please everyone:)

This is like T ball.
With a wicket

so when it comes to his bike race, "Iowa races are a free market
state when it relates to entry fees" "pay to play or put on your own
race in your own back yard." But when it comes to purchasing bike
equipment the Stalinist rhetoric runs free from the tap.

Joy be to the humans being.

  Ok Iowa Bike racers.
Iowa races are a free market state when it relates to entry fees.
The Muscatine Melon City Criterium entry fees are inline with the
rest of the state. If Muscatine is too high.....look around.
Pay to play or put on your own race in your back yard. I have not
promoted the Melon City Criterium for individuals bitchin about
entry fees. I put on a great race for bike racers. 500+ riders
from 26 states must think the race is fun and worth while to race.

Get on your bike and ride.

tbdemented must want us to discern who he (or she) is from his posts. He
must be a fan of the Matrix, because no one would call me Mr Anderson if
not quoting the movie. He must also have Microsoft Word 8.0 with the
extra-awesome dictionary feature.

Whoever you are, thanks for the compliment (I also have Word and am not
afraid to use it).

Also, I agree with your condemnation of critical mass rides.

Well, we had a great turn out for tonight’s time trial. With many times
clumped together just seconds apart. Results won’t be on 2beeracing.com
tonight, but I’ll get them up as soon as I can. On another note, the
Road race series results are up tonight, I didn’t realize they failed to
upload till tonight. Now you can check out the overall points there. See
you next Wednesday for the “flat” TT.

He certainly does not require a
guardian Angel in the form of a nascent real estate magnet.

Referring to a previous post, I would like to order one of those
exceedingly rare nascent real estate magnets for my refrigerator.

There's a big difference between constructive criticism directed to a
promoter and spewing annoying rants annonymously on a message board for
everyone to read. Every race flyer has the promoter's contact email. I
suppose you wouldn't get the same ego-boost from a thoughtful complaint
directed to the race promoter as you get from some inflammatory email
posted under an alias.
