It turned out to be another great day for racing in Des Moines today.
We lucked out and missed this morning's showers and were done well
before the storms/tornado warnings hit in the afternoon. Hope everyone
driving home made it back okay!
In the Women Open, it proved to be a sprint for 2nd place after Pam
Hinton (Columbia Bike) broke away early on and never looked back.
Breakaway partner Andrea Venteicher (All 9 Yards.com Cycling) helped
establish a sizable gap initially, but then retreated back to the pack
as Hinton continued to increase the pace with each lap. Keely Shannon
(MRT) would demonstrate her sprinting abilities by taking 2nd place
ahead a hard charging Anne Meyer (ICCC).
The Cat 4/5 race would play out in similar fashion, with Josh Madsen
(ICCC) taking a flier on the first lap and continuously extending his
lead to finish solo over a minute up on the rest of the field. Not to
be outdone, the 4/5 field decided they'd try their hands at sprinting
for 2nd place as well with Curt Long (MRT) demonstrating his own MRT
sprinting capabilities to take 2nd over Brian Farrell (MBWC).
With each lap comprising 1.5 miles in length, the Masters 40 and 50
categories were separated at the start. Attempts to repeat the cycle
from the first two races were made in the 40+, but were quickly
brought back by the field until a successful break consisting of Doug
Reichardt (riding the 40+ category), Marc Walter (Lincoln Plating),
and Dave Lippold (Central IA Cycling) got away with 15 minutes
remaining in the timed portion. These three would maintain their lead
and finish in the same order with Reichardt taking the win. In the 50+
group, things became more interesting with 2 laps to go when they
found themselves combined with the 40+ pack, setting up the inevitable
field sprint. Tom Eaton (Central IA Cycling) would find his way to the
front to finish a few bike lengths ahead of Bruce Harick
(Bianchi/Grand Performance) who took second.
The final race of the day was the Pro/1/2/3 event. Despite a number of
breakaway attempts, no one was getting away from this group. The
largest gap anyone was able to establish was 20 seconds, with attempts
to bridge resulting in pulling the main field back up to the leader(s)
on the road. With a field sprint in their sights, it came down to who
had the freshest legs and who had right combination of teammates left.
In the end it proved to be Bianchi/Grand Performance's day with
multiple teammates successfully leading out Eric Marcotte to take the
win with Tone Coughlin (Lake Superior Cycling), Jon Randell (Lincoln
Plating), and Jim Cochran (Atlas/Core) following very close behind.
I can't say thanks enough again to everyone who helped make this race
happen. It turned out to be a great weekend of racing!
