Looking at the draw deeper, I think – ironically – that Minnesota has the toughest draw relative to their position.  As the 11 seed, you’d think the Committee would take care to see they had a fair draw since they are a regional host.  As an example, look at Florida, the 16 seed.  They not only host the regionals, but 1st/2nd round as well and get a much easier draw – C of C then (probably) FIU, Sun Belt #1.   It’s amazing how the Committee could give them a weak 1st round opponent when far higher seeds get far tougher opponents.

The Gophers, the 11 seed, get hot Louisville (Big East #1) and then probably Tennessee, who is the host and is also hot, having won their last 4 (including Florida and Kentucky) and also has only lost one match at home all season, to LSU.  It’s a really tough draw for the Gophers, and if they manage to emerge from Knoxville, they get Washington at home, a team that has already beaten them 3-0 on a neutral floor.

It’s almost unconscionable how bad this draw is compared to other lower seeded teams such as Michigan (13) who gets an weak 1st round (Niagara) then either Ohio or ND, but Michigan plays at home and will be favored to beat either team.  The 15 seed, LSU, gets to play at home and gets Tulane, who they already beat at home 3-0, and then a low power conference team, either Arizona or A&M, neither of whom are slouches but are on the road, unlike Tennessee.  Then there is Florida at 16, already described above, who the Committee treated with kid gloves to make sure they got into their own regional.

The Gophers got ripped off, basically.  Anytime you add the two RPIs of two 1st round teams and it’s below 60, it’s a bad draw.  Gophers-Louisville adds up to 51, low for a 1st round match.  The toughest 1st round match is Ohio v. ND at 38 (!)  which is a typical 2nd round match, total RPI in the 30s.  UCLA-Beach is 47, another tough one.

If you don’t think so, consider Ohio State – not a seeded team but whose 1st round is easier, they get Cincinnati (Big East #3) and that match is total RPI 73.  After that, probably Cal, a great team but one who is beatable – SLU and Irvine have wins over Cal and OSU gets to play in Columbus, and I actually give them a slight edge to beat Cal to get to the sweet 16.

Even though seeded, if the Gophers make the sweet 16, it will be quite an achievement, more so than any other Big Ten team – unless MSU pulls off a complete miracle and beats both Kentucky (in Lexington, no less) and then probably Oregon.

Brackets are out.

#1 Penn State hosts Binghamton and then the Army/Penn winner in the top half of the Gainesville Regional.
Ohio State hosts Cincinnati and then either #9 Cal or Lipscomb winner in the bottom half of the Gainesville Regional.
#5 Illinois hosts IPFW and then the UW-Milwaukee/Dayton winner in the top half of the Stanford Regional.
#13 Michigan hosts Niagara and then the Ohio/Notre Dame winner in the bottom half of the Stanford Regional.
Michigan State is at Kentucky and then the Clemson/#14 Oregon winner in the top half of the Minneapolis Regional.
#11 Minnesota plays Louisville at Tennessee and then the Tennessee/Duke winner in the bottom half of the Minneapolis Regional.

Interesting how the top 3 Big 12 teams all ended up in the same Omaha Regional.

I'll beat Rob to it this year--Northwestern and Indiana made the mistake of scheduling an even number of matches, and may have lost a tournament bid because of it. They each had an overall winning percentage of .500, which is too low to be eligible for the tournament. As a result, MSU leap-frogged them (as well as Purdue and Wisconsin) to get into the tournament in spite of a tenth-place (last-place?) conference finish.

Of course MSU was also sixth in the conference in RPI ranking, which was certainly a big help. MSU's RPI had them at #37 in the country, with the next best Big Ten team, Purdue, at #55.

Correction, should be “…surprised they sent two Pac-10 teams to Minneapolis”, not Big Ten.

I guess I can reply to my own message J

I thought the brackets would be out at 6 PM, but here they are now.  The field is pretty much what I thought it would be, with three exceptions; MSU, New Mexico (Mike Hebert’s old stomping grounds) and Washington State.  It’s a good thing to belong to a power conference, it seems.

The three teams I had in were Western Michigan, UC Irvine and San Diego.  The Committee was harsh on the two non-power western conferences, the BWC and WCC, for their inconsistent play.    Western’s loss to Akron, with a poor RPI, really hurt.  MSU had a good RPI and a nice win over USC but the west coast teams must be screaming that a 17-15 team made it, UCI in particular at 22-8 and a win over Cal.  Fortunately, it’s _our_ 17-15 team J  Perhaps the teams that didn’t make it will look at their cupcakey non-conference schedule and beef it up…

UNM redeemed themselves by going 7-2 over their last 9, only losing to CSU and TCU, the latter loss didn’t hurt as much as TCU made it in.  Washington State, I thought, played themselves out by going 2-8 over the last 10, but a superior RPI saved them as did a last-ditch 5-set win over Oregon State.  Had they lost that, I don’t think they would have made it.  Again, being in a power conference helped, even though they were 6-12 in that league.

Looks like RPI ruled the day.  Clemson at 57 was the highest RPI taken for an at-large.  RPI in the 60’s didn’t cut it this year.

But the bigger problem is the way the Committee seeded the teams and distributed the regional matchups (assuming the seeds make it through).

·        Hawaii at 12 with FSU at 3 is a real stretch.  Again, it seemed that RPI ruled the day.  _Very_ surprised they put FSU into the Mpls regional and not Gainesville, where the natural rivalry would have drawn a big crowd.  They gave themselves a big problem by over-seeding FSU.

·        Way too many possible same-conference pairings exist in the sweet 16.  The way they have it now, Cal plays UCLA and ISU plays Nebraska.  .  I’m really surprised they sent two Pac 10 teams to Gainesville and two Big Ten teams to Palo Alto and Minneapolis.  But they gave Oregon a seed, which is not right.  Kentucky should have gotten that seed; they have a better RPI (21) to Oregon (26) to boot.  Had they given the seed to Kentucky, the brackets would be much cleaner.  Yes, I know that officially they (intra-conference conflicts in the sweet 16) don’t exist, but consider the following lineup instead of what they actually did.  This seeding and lineup has no intra-conference matchups at all.

·

o   @Stan                  @Minn                 @Neb                   @Fla

o   -----                       -----                       ----                        ----

o   Haw  (3)               Tex   (2)                 PSU (1)                  Wash (4)

o   Stan   (6)              UCLA  (7)               Cal (8)                     Ill (5)

o   ISU  (11)               Minn  (10)              Neb  (9)                Fla  (12)

o   Mich (14)            LSU   (15)               Ky   (16)                  FSU (13)

Then there are some doozy 1st rounders, including seeded teams.  LSU, the 15 seed, must not be happy with drawing Tulane in round 1, a team that beat them earlier this year.  Likewise the Gophers, drawing a hot Louisville team in round 1, a near-travesty of a draw.  They should have let Tennessee play Louisville, a more natural rivalry, and given Duke to the Gophers.  UCLA gets Beach, while a lower seed (Cal) in the same region gets Lipscomb.  I guess going on the road pays dividends in round 1, if you are west coast, you get an easier round 1 opponent, most likely.

Other really tough/interesting 1st rounders are Cincy-OSU (should be a big crowd), USC-Oklahoma,  Wichita State-SLU, Washington St-UNI  (Omaha crowd should be pulling for UNI all the way), and Arizona-A&M.  The two Pac 10-Big 12 matchups in particular are really tough, all those teams ranked in the top 30 (Richkern.com poll).

Well, we will find out in a couple of hours what the NCAA brackets are for 2009.  Notwithstanding the oncoming debates over bubble teams – who deserved to be in and was left out, and vice versa – it puzzles me to this day why conference teams schedule an even number of matches if they know it’s going to be a close call come December.  That is a sure-fire way to tempt fate – and indeed, two teams finished exactly at .500, which is a disqualifier by rule.

Northwestern was 16-16 and Indiana was 17-17.    Purdue and Wisconsin scheduled it correctly – they played an odd number of matches, but unfortunately their records were below .500 anyway, but at least they gave themselves a fighting chance.

But, hey, Chris Wolf just posted literally ten seconds ago (!) and he beat me to it…nice work Chris

Well, as fate would have it, there is now a glimmer of hope for six teams – as the stars are lining up for Northwestern.

If NU can upset the Illini in Evanston – a long shot to be sure, but not outside the realm of possibility – they would have 17 wins.  Is that enough?  Usually, not, especially coupled with 15 losses.  But a 17-15 Northwestern has an advantage now that Notre Dame lost in the Big East semis, and if Cincinnati wins today, NU’s win over Cincinnati looks considerably better than it was last week.  On the downside, FIU lost the Sun Belt title to Mid Tenn yesterday, making NU’s loss to them worse, but FIU at 30-3 will get a bid regardless, just not the automatic everyone thought they would.

Then there is MSU, who got agonizingly close to an upset of the Gophers last night at Jenison, especially after being up 2 sets.  MSU also looks to finish 17-15, with OSU/PSU on the road, that’s a tough draw.  But a 17-15 MSU looks far worse than a 17-15 NU, unfortunately; even though the win over USC early looks good, the losses to Iowa and Indiana do not, especially the latter at home.  Bad late-season losses do not sit well with the Committee.

Still, several “ifs” abound.  I’d give it a 10% chance at best for a sixth team.  I hope I’m wrong.

Women’s Volleyball Signs Five to 2010 Recruiting Class

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., Nov. 18, 2009 – Penn State women’s basketball coach Russ Rose announced today that he has signed five players to the 2010 recruiting class. Signees include Katie Slay, Deja McClendon, Madison Martin, Mikinzie Moydell and Ariel Scott.

“We have a great class coming in,” said coach Rose. “Both the players that have signed letters of intent and those who have to decided to walk on, many of which have turned down scholarships to attend Penn State.”

Slay, a 6-6 middle blocker, hails from Durham, N.C. and played for the same club team as current Nittany Lions Megan Hodge and Katie Kabbes.

“Katie is a great natural blocker,” said Rose. “She has the potential to become a strong front row player for us.”

McClendon is a 6-0 outside hitter from DuPont Manual High School in Louisville, Ky.

“Deja was recently recognized as Kentucky’s Miss Volleyball,” said Rose. “She’s an explosive outside hitter with the physical tools to become a dominant outside attacker.”

Martin, a 6-2 outside hitter, is from Plant City, Fla. and is currently helping her high school team chase its fourth straight state championship.

“Maddie is a great all-around player with the ability to help us at either front row outside positions, as well as being a primary passer in the back row,” said Rose.

Moydell is a 6-1 setter who will join the Nittany Lions from Parker, Colo.

“We thought Mikinizie was the top setter prospect in the class,” said Rose. “We feel that there will be a transition, but once she gets up used to the speed of the college game she could be a great college setter.”

Last, but not least, Scott is a 6-5 outside hitter-middle blocker hailing from Newark, N.J.

“Ariel is a player we’re looking to see fit into any front row positions,” said Rose. “She is a dominant attacker with a high contact point.”

“The 2010 class meets a lot of our needs,” explained Rose. “We needed depth and size at our front row positions with the graduation of seniors Kelsey Ream, Alisha Glass and Hodge.”
