Indiana moves to 5-4 with a 3-1 win over Purdue last night in
Bloomington. This included a 20-28 (I believe) comeback in game 1.
Big night for Hall @ OH, too.

Purdue is also 5-4 with the loss.

Indiana @ 5-4. How cool is that?

No. 2 Penn State Women’s Volleyball Outlasts Illinois, 3-2
Glass racks up career high 14 blocks as squad posts 25 total stuffs

CHAMPAIGN, Ill., Oct 19, 2007 – The second-ranked Penn State women’s volleyball team racked up 25 team blocks in outlasting Illinois in five games (30-28, 30-25, 19-30, 28-30, 15-10) Friday night at Huff Hall in Champaign, Ill. The Nittany Lions improve to 17-2 and remain undefeated in the Big Ten at 9-0 while the Fighting Illini fall to 12-7 and 4-5 in league action.

Penn State tied a Huff Hall record with 25 total blocks in the contest as sophomore setter Alisha Glass (Leland, Mich.) set a new Nittany Lion single-match record with 14 blocks and junior middle hitter Christa Harmotto (Aliquippa, Pa.) set a new season high with 12 stuffs. Freshman middle hitter Arielle Wilson (Broadview, Ill.) tied her career high with nine blocks as redshirt freshman Blair Brown (Purcellville, Va.) notched five stuffs.

Sophomore outside hitter Megan Hodge (Durham, N.C.) led the Lions with 23 kills as junior outside hitter Nicole Fawcett (Zanesfield, Ohio) contributed 19 and Harmotto contributed 11 kills on .400 hitting. The Nittany Lions outhit the Fighting Illini .226 to .218 but Illinois recorded more total kills, 82-65.

Glass dished out 51 assists as junior libero Roberta Holehouse (Joppa, Md.) led all players with 20 digs as Hodge collected her 20th career double-double and her eight of the year with 12 digs, while senior Kate Price (Fraser, Mich.) notched 10 digs.

Laura DeBruler led Illinois with 27 kills as Stefanie Alde provided 20, Vicki Brown tallied 16 and Nicole Kump posted 10. Lizzie Bazzetta dished out 69 assists and Kristine Anderson led the team with 18 digs. Brown and Bangert each posted three blocks in the contest. Illinois outdug Penn State 82-54 in the match.

The Fighting Illini struck first in the decisive fifth game, going up 2-0 on consecutive DeBruler kills. Brown responded with a kill for the Lions and an Illini attack error tied the game at 2-2. A Harmotto slide kill gave Penn State the lead and a Glass and Harmotto block made it 4-2. Another DeBruler kill off the block pulled Illinois within one at 4-3 and another monster block by Glass and Harmotto pushed the Lions up 5-3. Out of an Illini timeout, an Illinois attack error and Lion block by Harmotto and Glass, their third of the game, put Penn State up 7-3. A Lion service error and Illinois kill from Alde brought the Fighting Illini within two at 7-5 but a Fawcett kill off the block made it 8-5. The teams traded kills and a Fawcett solo block gave Penn State the 10-6 advantage. Another Alde kill pulled Illinois within three at 10-7 but a Fawcett rollshot kill to the middle of the floor put the Lions up 11-7. An Illini attack error and Lion block by Hodge and Wilson put Penn State ahead 13-7 before an Illinois kill from Brown pulled the Illini within five at 13-8. A Brown and Wilson block gave the Nittany Lions match point at 14-8 but Illinois held fast, providing consecutive blocks to force a Penn State timeout at 14-10. A Harmotto slide kill out of the break gave the Lions the match, 15-10.

Illinois jumped out to an early lead to start the match, going up 8-3 aided by six kills. But Penn State chipped away at the deficit, with kills from Fawcett and Harmotto and a Hodge service ace bringing the Lions to within one at 9-8. The teams traded points and an Illini attack error and a Glass and Wilson block gave Penn State the 11-10 lead. An Illinois kill evened the score and the squads traded points several times, with a Harmotto and Brown block coupled with a Holehouse service ace making the Nittany Lion lead one at 16-15. And Illini kill knotted the game at 16-16 and the teams exchanged points before an Illinois service ace off the tape and two kills gave the squad the 20-17 lead. A Harmotto and Glass block brought the Lions within two but Illinois maintained the slim lead, taking the 25-23 advantage on a kill. A Hodge putaway and an Illinois attack error evened the game at 25-25. Following an Illinois timeout, a Hodge block put Penn State up 26-25 and the teams traded kills before an Illini attack error gave the Lions the 28-26 lead. After exchanging kills, an Illini putaway trimmed the Lion lead to one at 29-28 before a Fawcett kill gave Penn State the game, 30-28. Fawcett recorded six kills and Hodge added five as the Lions recorded five team blocks in the stanza.

Penn State racked up four of its first seven points on blocks to take the 7-4 lead to start the second game but Illinois fought back to tie the game at 9-9 on back to back kills. Hodge and Brown kills gave the Nittany Lions the 13-10 lead but again the Illini evened the score at 14-14 on a service ace. The teams traded points and a Harmotto and Glass block put Penn State on top, 16-15. A Glass solo stuff made it 18-15 and Fawcett and Hodge kills aided the Lions in going ahead 21-19 before a Harmotto overpass kill put Penn State up 23-20 and forced an Illinois timeout. Out of the break, the Illini scored three of the next four points to pull within one at 24-23 before Hodge and Harmotto kills pushed the Lion lead to 26-23. Two Illinois attack errors and another Glass and Harmotto block made it 29-23 before a Fawcett kill ended the game, 30-25. Hodge recorded six kills in the game as Fawcett chipped in five and Harmotto added four. Glass provided six blocks in the second game alone, falling just shy of her career high mark (7) in just one game of action.

A Wilson and Brown block and back to back Wilson overpass kills put Pen State up 7-6 in the third game. But the Fighting Illini scored the next four points to take the 10-7 lead. A Brown kill halted the run and the teams traded points before consecutive Illinois kills put it ahead 13-9. Following a Harmotto kill, Illinois rattled off three consecutive kills to take the 16-10 lead and force a Penn State timeout. Out of the break, the teams traded service errors and Illinois caught fire, taking four of the next five points on three kills and a service ace to go up 21-12 and force another Nittany Lion timeout. Out of the break, the teams traded points twice before a Hodge kill pulled Penn State within eight at 23-15. But Illinois claimed the next two points on an overpass kill and a Lion attack error to go ahead 25-15 and after exchanging scores again, a Harmotto and Hodge block brought Penn State within nine at 26-17. But the Fighting Illini remained in control, taking four of the next six points to claim the game, 30-19 on an Alde kill. Illinois attacked at a .421 clip in the game.

Illinois picked up where it left off in the fourth game, taking the 11-6 lead on a kill and block. Two Hodge kills and a Harmotto and Glass block pulled Penn State to within three at 13-10 but a Fighting Illini kill and ace gave them the 15-10 lead. The teams traded kills and Lion putaways from Glass and Fawcett trimmed the Illinois lead to three at 16-13. But again Illinois responded with a kill and an ace to go up 18-13 and force a Penn State timeout. An Illini service error coupled with a monster block by Glass and Wilson pulled the Lions within three at 18-15. The teams traded points and a Hodge putaway brought Penn State within two at 19-17. The squads exchanged kills and consecutive Illinois attack errors tied the game at 20-20. After another exchange of kills, two Illini putaways put them up 23-21 but a Harmotto slide kill and a huge Glass solo block knotted the game at 23-23. Following an Illinois kill, Glass provided another monster solo block and senior Ann Naylor (Los Angeles, Calif.) contributed a service ace to give Penn State the 25-24 lead. But out of an Illinois timeout, the Fighting Illini stormed back with two kills and aided by a Lion attack error, grabbed the 27-25 lead. Out of a Penn State timeout, Fawcett provided a kill but Illinois responded with a kill of its own to go up 28-26. An Illinois service error and a back-row block by the setter knotted the game at 28-28 before a Lion service error and a Fighting Illini block by Kump and Brown gave Illinois the game, 30-28. Hodge led the Lions with eight kills in the game as the team provided five blocks.

Penn State remains on the road, taking on No. 8 Wisconsin on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1:00 p.m. CT in a match that will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network at 4:00 p.m. CT (5:00 p.m. ET) that same day.

Kind of stinks if you ask me. I'd much rather they were 4-5.

I am expecting an exciting match tomorrow for the people in Madison
and the 19 people who can watch the tape delay on the infernal Big Ten
Network. I think the upper deck of the Field House is going to be
open, so they are expecting a big crowd.

I am a bit surprised that the Lions struggled at Illinois, since they
have been rolling people since the start of conference season. They
haven't played too many road matches, so that might be part of it.
Also, I just get the feeling they might have relaxed a bit after
taking a 2-0 lead. It looks like the back row play was an issue for
the Lions last night. If the Badgers want to win, I think they have to
serve Penn State tough to keep the ball away from Harmotto and allow
them to focus on slowing down Hodge and Fawcett. If Penn State gets in
system and gets Brown and Wilson involved, I don't think the Badgers
can match up at the net. This team might be more physical at the net
than even the 1997-99 reign of terror squads, although the setting and
back row play isn't at those teams' level, fortunately.

For Wisconsin, they need to stay in system, obviously. If Simpson can
keep the Lions off balance, Wisconsin can win. I think that is really
important, because I don't see the Badgers scoring on the Lions'
double blocks very often. I am a huge Dolgner fan, but she is giving
up three inches (at least) to her PSU counterparts. I also am not sure
if AWack/DuPont will be able to put the ball away against the PSU
block. I hope they prove me wrong. It will help if Simpson can get
them the one on one matchups that they have had a lot in their home
matches this year. In a good sign, Dykstra and Jeffers had good nights
offensively against Ohio State, offsetting a quiet night from Reineke.
I do think the Badgers are better at M2/RS than they were last year.

I am looking forward to the match tomorrow, obviously. Badger fans
have been waiting for a match like this one since the end of the 2001
season. It was great to sweep PSU last year, but it was clear the
Badgers wouldn't win the league. Because of the road wins, they are in
position to put themselves in the Big Ten lead. I think they will have
to win this one to win the league, as I don't see them winning at PSU.
Also, I think PSU is more dominant and less likely to slip up, last
night notwithstanding. I hope the Badgers can bring a high level of
play, cut down on the unforced hitting errors, and get a big win. Bill
Engle

Well the Spartans finally had an inspiring match, as well as their first
double-conference-win week of the year, beating Minnesota 30-28, 35-33,
30-22. Minnesota may have been handicapped by the previous night's five game
loss to Northwestern, as well as travel problems that had them arriving at
the field house here less than 90 minutes before game time. It was also
MSU's first win over the Gophers in eleven meetings.

Is it common for teams to travel the afternoon of? I know that when
teams play at Purdue on Friday, they tend to drive straight to
Bloomington after the match. Then again, that's only a two hour trip.

However, even if they are going to fly the next day, you would figure
they'd try to get out early. Was the delay that long?

Perhaps the Northwestern match ended late enough that no flights to Detroit were available at that time and earlier flights on Saturday were filled or delayed as well because of the weather?

Pure speculation; but travel through both O’Hare and Detroit Metro can be a real mess with frequent delays.

Then getting a bus organized to get from Detroit to East Lansing could have been a mess as well.

I’m confident they wouldn’t have wanted to pull an all night drive from Chicago to East Lansing so they could risk an even worse trip.  I’ve made the reverse of that trip in the recent pass (a bit over a year ago) and construction was a bit of a mess on 94 heading through Michigan heading toward the Chicago area where the road construction almost everywhere was causing traffic nightmares, frequent stops and long delays, and a major detour from 94 into city roads of Chicago before we could get back onto the highways and over to 294 where there was somewhat less construction but frequent delays trying to get through the toll booth lanes.

Chicago / northern Illinois roads always seem to be under construction, especially during holidays.

Don't they take their own charter? I know Purdue does. Even if
Northwestern ended late, one would figure they would head early early
on Sat, but that's just me guessing.

The only weather on Friday/Sat would have been wind.

I don’t think the Gophers charter flights very often – at least they didn’t do it much in the past.

I’m only speculating as well.

Perhaps we’ll eventually find out what actually did happen.

No. 2 Penn State Women’s Volleyball Outlasts No. 8 Wisconsin, 3-2
Hodge leads the Lions with 23 kills

MADISON, Wis., Oct 21, 2007 – The second-ranked Penn State women’s volleyball team survived its second five-game contest in as many matches, outlasting No. 8 Wisconsin (30-18, 24-30, 24-30, 30-27, 15-13) to remain undefeated in Big Ten action at 10-0, improving to 18-2 overall. The Badgers fall into second place at 9-1 in the league and 17-2 overall.

Sophomore outside hitter Megan Hodge (Durham, N.C.) led the Lions with 23 kills and junior outside hitter Nicole Fawcett (Zanesfield, Ohio) notched 17 kills and junior middle hitter Christa Harmotto (Aliquippa, Pa.) chipped in 16 kills on .444 hitting. Freshman middle hitter Arielle Wilson (Broadview, Ill.) contributed nine kills as redshirt freshman opposite Blair Brown (Purcellville, Va.) notched eight kills.

Sophomore setter Alisha Glass (Leland, Mich.) dished out 62 assists as junior libero Roberta Holehouse (Joppa, Md.) led the squad with 13 digs and Hodge posted 10 for her 21st double-double. Fawcett notched nine digs and Glass and senior Kate Price (Fraser, Mich.) tallied eight digs.

Penn State recorded 15.0 team blocks to Wisconsin’s 8.0. Harmotto and Brown led the squad with six blocks each as Wilson posted five, Hodge notched three and Glass recorded two.

Brittney Dolgner led Wisconsin with 27 kills as Taylor Reineke and Audra Jeffers each contributed 13 kills. Jackie Simpson dished out 64 assists and libero Jocelyn Wack provided 22 digs. Jeffers led the squad with four blocks.

A Fawcett service ace started off the decisive fifth game and a Hodge kill put Penn State up 5-3 and the teams traded points before three Wisconsin kills and a Lion attack error gave Wisconsin the 8-6 lead heading into the side change. Out of the television timeout, a Harmotto kill brought the Lions within one at 7-8 and a Fawcett cross-court kill tied the game at 8-8. A Penn State service error put Wisconsin back on top, 9-8, but the Lions responded with a block from Glass and Wilson to tie the game at 9-9. A Wisconsin putaway was quickly followed by a Fawcett kill to knot the score at 10-10 and a Jeffers kill for the Badgers was answered by a Hodge kill before a Wisconsin net violation while blocking gave the Nittany Lions the 12-11 lead and forced a Wisconsin timeout. Out of the break, a solo Brown stuff pushed the Lion cushion to two at 13-11 and caused another Badger timeout. Out of this break, a Wisconsin attack sailed long to make it 14-11 but the Badgers responded with kills from Dolgner and Reineke to pull within one at 14-13. Following a Penn State timeout, a Harmotto kill off the block gave the Lions the game, 15-13.

A Hodge kill gave Penn State the early 5-2 lead to start the match and two more Hodge kills out of the backrow put the Lions up 8-4. A Fawcett kill and solo Wilson block of Simpson made the Penn State advantage 10-5 and forced a Wisconsin timeout. Out of the break, a Badger attack error and Brown kill down the line kept the Lions on top, 12-6. Kills from Harmotto and Fawcett and a Hodge backrow rollshot putaway extended the Penn State lead to 15-10 and sparked a 5-0 Lion run capped by a Fawcett and Wilson block to put Penn State ahead 19-10. A Wisconsin kill and block out of a Badger timeout pulled Wisconsin within seven at 19-12 but two more Fawcett kills aided Penn State in going up 21-13. The teams traded points and Harmotto and Hodge kills and a monster Hodge solo block extended the lead to 26-15 before a solo Glass block ended the game, 30-18. Hodge led the squad with six kills on an errorless eight swings to hit .750 as Fawcett and Harmotto added five and four kills, respectively.

The second game remained even early on, with a Hodge kill and Badger attack error put the Nittany Lions up 5-4, but Wisconsin scored eight of the next 10 points, including seven on kills, to force a Penn State timeout at 12-7.  Out of the break, two Brown kills sandwiched a Wisconsin kill and a Hodge cutshot down the line pulled the Lions within three at 13-10. The Badgers responded with three consecutive kills to push their advantage to 16-10 but a Penn State block from Harmotto and Brown halted the run. However, another Wisconsin kill from Reineke and two Lion attack errors forced a Penn State timeout with Wisconsin ahead 19-11. The teams traded kills and following a Badger kill from Reineke, a Wisconsin attack error and two Wilson kills brought Penn State within six at 21-15. The squads exchanged kills twice and a Hodge and Wilson block and a Fawcett service ace down the line forced a Wisconsin timeout with its lead trimmed to four at 23-19. A Badger attack error out of the break brought Penn State within three at 23-20 but a Dolgner kill, consecutive Lion attack errors and a Badger block from Dolgner and Reineke put Wisconsin ahead 27-20. A Wilson and Brown block and Harmotto kill trimmed the Badger lead to five at 27-22 and following a Lion service error, two Hodge kills pulled Penn State within four at 28-24 but a Reineke kill and Simpson solo block gave Wisconsin the game, 30-24. Wilson led the Lions with five kills on an errorless seven swings to hit .714.

Wisconsin grabbed the 3-0 lead to begin the third game before Penn State fought back to tie the game at 4-4 on a Harmotto kill. Four ties ensued, with a Wilson kill making it 8-8, and the Lions scored the next four points on a Wilson solo block, Hodge kill down the line, a Badger attack error and another Hodge kill to go up 12-8. But Wisconsin scored four of the next five points to pull within one at 13-12. A Badger attack error and Hodge ace put the Lions up 15-12 and the teams traded points twice before a Wisconsin block from Reineke and Simpson tied the game at 16-16. Three ties ensued before Badger kills from Wack and Dolgner and a Lion attack error put Wisconsin up 22-19. A Wisconsin ball-handling error coupled with a Hodge and Harmotto block brought Penn State within one at 22-21 but the Badgers responded with a kill from Dykstra to push their lead back to two at 23-21. A Hodge kill once again closed the gap but a Badger putaway and back to back Penn State attack errors put Wisconsin ahead 26-22. A Harmotto kill made it 26-23 but two more Badger kills extended their lead to 28-23. A Fawcett kill pulled the Lions within four at 28-24 but Wisconsin kills from Wack and Jeffers gave the Badgers the game at 30-24. Hodge led the Lions with six kills in the contest.

Wisconsin knotted the fourth game at 4-4 with a service ace but consecutive Badger errors and a Harmotto and Glass block gave Penn State the 7-4 lead. Following a Wisconsin kill from Simpson, a Fawcett putaway and Harmotto ace to the deep corner made it 9-5. A Badger kill and Simpson ace off the tape brought Wisconsin within two at 9-7 but three Badger attack errors coupled with a Fawcett kill put the Lions up 13-7. Wisconsin kills from Dolgner and Jeffers and a Lion error pulled the Badgers within three at 13-10 but a Fawcett kill halted the run. A Hodge kill made it 15-11 and a Wisconsin attack error and block by Brown and Harmotto put the Lions up 17-11. The teams traded kills and two Badger kills trimmed Penn State’s lead to four at 18-14. Back to back Harmotto kills gave the Lions the 20-14 advantage but two Penn State errors and a Wisconsin kill from Jeffers pulled the Badgers within three at 20-17 and forced a Lion timeout. Out of the break, a DuPont overpass kill continued the run but a Fawcett kill put Penn State ahead 21-18. A Wisconsin kill and block and a Lion attack error knotted the game at 21-21 and five ties ensued before a Hodge kill and Badger attack that went long put Penn State ahead 28-26 and forced a Wisconsin timeout at 28-26. Out of the break, a Glass overpass kill gave the Lions game point at 29-26 and a Reineke kill made it 29-27 before a Fawcett kill gave Penn State the game, 30-27. Fawcett posted seven kills in the stanza.

Penn State remains on the road, taking on Iowa and Minnesota next weekend, Oct. 26-27 before returning home to host Purdue and Indiana on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3. The match with the Gophers will be broadcast on ESPN2 on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 12:00 p.m. ET, a change from the original broadcast time of 1:00 p.m. ET. The Saturday, Oct. 27 contest will also be broadcast live on the web on ESPN360.com.

Indeed…that has to be very rough mentally.  Just splitting those four matches – instead of losing all four – puts the Illini at 6-4 and in a strong position for an NCAA berth.  Now they are 12-8 overall and cannot afford to slip at all.  If they do another 4-6 in the 2nd half they end up at 16-14 and are bubble at best.

Surprise team of the season so far has to be the Hoosiers.  5-5 is nicely done and if they duplicate that, they will dance at 19-13.  Bummer team of the year has to be the Buckeyes, 3-7 at the break isn’t what Coach Stone had envisioned for his last campaign, I’m sure.  Worst road trip of the half award goes to the Gophers for their 0-2 against NU and MSU.  What a bummer.  That is now 5 losses in a row; I can’t remember the last time that happened in conference to the team from Up North.

Ohio State captures a 3-2 win at Illinois
Ohio State's Danielle Meyer records a triple-double with 27 kills, 17
digs and 12 blocks in the victory.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State (9-10 overall, 3-7 Big Ten) women's
volleyball team, behind Danielle Meyer's (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio)
first career triple-double, won a 3-2 (30-26, 30-24, 29-31, 22-30, 17-
15) decision at Illinois Sunday. Meyer collected match-highs of 27
kills and 12 blocks (one solo and 11 assists) and a team-high 17 digs
to record her first-ever triple-double, recording a match-high 34.5
points. For Illinois, Vicki Brown had a team-high 21.5 points with 19
kills and five assist blocks.

Trailing, 16-15, a Katie Dull (Fr., Solon, Ohio) kill tied game one
at 16. An Illinois error and a Dull kill put Ohio State ahead at 18-
16. A Buckeye error cut the lead to 18-17, but an Illini service
error and an Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) kill put Ohio State
ahead, 20-17. At 28-24, OSU, kills from Laura DeBruler and Brown cut
the Ohio State lead to two at 28-26. A Dull kill set game point at 29-
26 and the Buckeyes won the game, 30-26, with a kill from Stevens.
Ohio State hit .333 for the game to .250 for Illinois.

Illinois trailed 16-13 in game two and used a Stefanie Alde kill, a
Buckeye error and a Johannah Bangert ace serve to tie the game. Ohio
State then scored the next four points to open a 20-16 lead. The run
began with a Meyer kill, an Illini error, a Kaila Calhoun (Fr.,
Elkhart, Ind.)-Kristi Hunter (Fr., Roblin, Manitoba, Canada) block
and a Hunter kill. Illini kills from Alde, Brown and Amy Palash cut
the lead to one at 20-19. Two Calhoun kills, one from Dull, an Illini
error and a Calhoun-Dull block opened up a 25-19 Buckeye lead. At 28-
23, a Meyer kill set game point at 29-23. A Buckeye error stopped the
first game point at 29-24. Meyer closed out the game with a kill at
30-24 to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead in the match. OSU hit .263 for
the game to .140 for the Badgers.

Illinois built a 25-19 lead in game three before three Illini errors,
a Meyer-Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) block and a Meyer
kill cut the Illinois lead to one at 25-24. A Meyer-McCarthy block
tied the game at 26. A Hunter kill and a Meyer-McCarthy block made it
28-26. A Lizzie Bazzetta kill and a DeBruler-Bangert block tied the
game at 28. A Meyer kill made it 29-28 with Ohio State serving match
point. A DeBruler kill stopped the match point and tied the game at
29. A Buckeye error put Illinois ahead, 30-29 with the Illini serving
game point. Another Ohio State error gave Illinois a 31-29 win in the
game. The Buckeyes hit .178 for the game to .146 for Illinois.

The Illini broke a 12-all tie in game four with a Brown kill, an OSU
error, an Abby Nelson-Bazzetta block and a DeBruler kill to take a 16-
12 lead. Trailing by six at 19-13, Ohio State scored five straight
points to cut the Illini lead to one at 19-18. The run began with
Buckeye kills from Hunter, McCarthy and Calhoun. Two blocks by
Calhoun and McCarthy complete the run. An OSU error and an Alde kill
put Illinois ahead, 21-18. Illinois closed out the game with a 9-4
run, winning the game off a Buckeye error at 30-22 to tie the match
at two games each. Illinois hit .205 for the game to .043 for Ohio
State.

Defensively, Illinois had an 81-77 advantage in digs with Ashley
Edinger recording a match-high 34 digs for the Illini. At the net,
Ohio State had a season-high 23 to eight margin in team blocks. The

Great.  Now if they can only get it on a network that is for the people and not for the Big Ten and big money.  This has been one of the greatest disappointments yet.  The BTN will only get worse once football is over and the other olympic sports start.

This is a very interesting week...just about every match could be considered
critical for the teams involved.

Illinois must prove itself on the road with two teams close to them in the
standings; Iowa could get a split; Indiana must defend the home court against
two strong teams; Michigan has a chance for a 2-0 weekend and must take
advantage; MSU likewise; Minnesota could impress the NCAA by beating PSU at
home; NU could jump up by taking 2 matches at home, against the Michigans who
are close to them in the standings; OSU could re-establish itself with a huge
road sweep; PSU must not stumble on the road, lest a top 4 seed vanish; Purdue
has arguably its toughest home weekend all year; Wisconsin must survive yet
another road trip versus two upper-bracket teams.

Fasten your seat belts.

I'd say one could make the following case, as well: If Minnesota
loses to PSU tonight (which stands to reason), thus dropping their
6th Big10 match in a row, their bid and their season could be on the
line against the Buckeyes Saturday night.

No. 2 Penn State Women’s Volleyball Buries Minnesota, 3-0
Hodge racks up 19 kills on .607 hitting with 12 digs

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., Oct 26, 2007 – Sophomore outside hitter Megan Hodge (Durham, N.C.) racked up 19 kills on .607 hitting with 12 digs for her 22nd career double-double to lead the second-ranked Penn State women’s volleyball team to a three-game win (30-21, 30-25, 30-15) victory at Minnesota Friday night. The Nittany Lions improve to 19-2 and 11-0 in the Big Ten while the Golden Gophers fall to 12-9 and 5-6 in league action.

Hodge’s 19 kills led all players as junior outside hitter Nicole Fawcett (Zanesfield, Ohio) notched 13 kills. Junior middle hitter Christa Harmotto (Aliquippa, Pa.) notched six kills and redshirt freshman Blair Brown (Purcellville, Va.) also tallied six kills. Penn State attacked at a .402 clip for the match while holding Minnesota to hitting .068.

Sophomore setter Alisha Glass (Leland, Mich.) dished out 38 assists and Hodge led the defense with 12 digs as junior libero Roberta Holehouse (Joppa, Md.) recorded nine digs and Fawcett posted eight while Glass tallied seven.

Penn State outblocked 13.0 to 3.0, led by Harmotto with six, Glass and senior Melissa Walbridge (Yardley, Pa.) with five each and Hodge with two.

A Harmotto solo block and a Minnesota attack error gave Penn State the 5-3 lead to start the match but the Golden Gophers used a kill and three Nittany Lion errors to grab the 8-7 advantage. A Glass kill and solo block sparked a 9-0 Penn State run capped by a Walbridge and Glass block to put the Lions ahead 16-8. A Gopher kill from Hagerty halted the run and Penn State maintained the advantage at 18-12 on a Brown kill. Another Brown kill coupled with a Glass kill off a great dig from freshman Alyssa D’Errico (Byron, N.Y.) pushed the Lion lead to 23-15 and forced a Minnesota timeout. Out of the break, the teams traded points and a Fawcett kill along with two Gopher errors gave Penn State the 27-16 lead. Minnesota claimed four of the next five points to pull within eight at 28-20 before a Walbridge kill ended the game for the Lions, 30-21. Fawcett, Harmotto, Glass and Hodge all recorded three kills in the stanza as the Lions tallied four team blocks, including two each from Glass and Walbridge. Penn State attacked at a .355 clip while holding Minnesota to hitting .023.

The second game started off with the teams close, a Hodge kill giving Penn State the 5-2 lead. Minnesota clawed back to tie the game at 9-9 on a 4-0 run capped b a Hagerty kill. The teams traded points twice before Lion kills from Brown, Hodge and Fawcett, along with a Price ace, put Penn State up 15-11. The Gophers took three of the next four points to pull within two at 16-14 and the squads traded points twice before a Minnesota kill brought the Gophers within one at 18-17 before another putaway knotted the game at 19-19. Two Hodge kills and a Minnesota attack error following an amazing diving D’Errico save from near the endzone bleachers that was punched over by Glass put Penn State up 22-19. The Nittany Lions maintained the slim lead, going ahead 24-22 on a Hodge kill, but it was answered by Gopher kills from Roehrig and Jones to tie the game at 24-24 and force a Penn State timeout. Out of the break, two Fawcett kills and a Hodge putaway from the backrow gave the Nittany Lions the 27-24 advantage. A Walbridge kill out of a Minnesota timeout pushed the lead to four at 28-24 and following a Penn State service error, a Fawcett kill and Fawcett and Walbridge block ended the game, 30-25. Fawcett and Hodge both recorded seven kills in the set.

A Gopher attack error, one block by Walbridge and Hodge, another from Walbridge and Brown, and a Hodge kill sparked a 4-0 Lion run to start the game and Penn State never looked back. A Glass kill, Harmotto block and Hodge ace extended the lead to 13-3 and a Walbridge kill and block by Harmotto and Hodge pushed the score to 18-7. Two Hodge kills and a Fawcett putaway gave Penn State the 21-8 lead and back to back blocks, one from Harmotto and Glass and another by Harmotto and Fawcett put the Lions up 23-9. Kills from Harmotto and Fawcett continued the run, 25-10 before a Hodge kill made it 26-12 and another Hodge kill gave Penn State the game, 30-15. Hodge racked up nine kills in the game.

Penn State remains on the road, taking on Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m. CT in Iowa City, Iowa. Friday’s match between the Golden Gophers and Nittany Lions will air on ESPN2 on a tape-delay basis on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 12:00 p.m. ET.

A Harmotto kill and Price ace put the Lions up 16-10 and two Harmotto putaways aided Penn State going up 18-12. Two Fawcett kills, a Glass putaway and a Brown rollshot kill to the middle of the floor pushed the score to 24-13. Following a Nittany Lion service error, Penn State scored six of the next seven points, with three points coming on two Brown kills and a solo block, to take the game, 30-15. Back to back Fawcett kills made it 11-4 and consecutive putaways from Wilson and Hodge pushed the score to 15-6. Iowa scored three of the next four points to pull within six at 16-10 but two Hawkeye attack errors pushed the Lions back up 19-11. Iowa claimed the next four points on two Penn State errors and two kills to close the gap to four at 19-15 but a Harmotto kill halted the run and put the Lions up 20-15. A Brown kill and a block by Brown and Wilson extended Penn State’s advantage to 23-18 before a Brown kill made it 25-21 and following an Iowa kill, Harmotto and Hodge putaways forced a Hawkeye timeout at 27-22. A Harmotto and Glass block out of the break made it 28-22 before a Fawcett kill ended the game, 30-23.

Following an Iowa kill from Smale, kills from Fawcett and Walbridge along with a Brown and Walbridge block put the Nittany Lions on top, 23-19. The teams traded kills twice, with a Brown kill putting Penn State ahead 25-21. Another Brown kill extended it to 27-22 but an Iowa kill and ace aided the Hawkeyes in pulling within four at 28-24. I'm sure I've never seen it before. Depending on what happens between Ohio
State and Minnesota tonight, we will have either 7 or 8 Big Ten teams within
one game of each other, at six weeks into the season! In fact, if Ohio State
wins, we'll have a six-way tie for 5th place.

OK, this is quite the wackiest I've ever seen the standings at this point of the season.  Only two teams above .500, and all but one team with a legitimate shot at a top-three finish.  And by the way, a six-way tie.

I suppose I can ask this now since we (PSU) are done with them for the season and it won't come back to karmically bite me in the ass, but -- with all due respect to a great program and coach -- what *is* going on with the Gophers???

Right now I'd predict that whoever does end up in third place will go no better than 12-8.

I have no clue. They outblocked, outdug and outhit OSU -- and lost.
That's not the first time it's happened this year. They make too many
errors in crucial parts of games, and their passing has tended to
break down. The setting has gone from much improved to a real worry.

Gophers need to go 4-4 the rest of the way just to be _eligible_.
This -- 4-4 - is far from a given. A bid, if they are eligible, is
far from a given.

I can tell you that the 7-match slide started one match after Jones
was injured and right after they blew a 2-0 lead against OSU _the
first time_. They managed to win that match, but it's been a disaster
since then.

The joy here in mudville is currently hard to come by.
