MSU defeated Loyola 3-1 (8-15, 15-13, 15-4, 15-6)
MSU defeated Western Michigan 3-0 (15-13, 15-9, 15-4)

"Let's play two!" -- Mr. Cub

Penn State and Texas did just that this weekend in State College, in the
last tests for both teams before the start of their conference schedules.
Penn State won both: 9-15, 15-7, 15-1, 15-13 on Friday night; and 15-6,
12-15, 15-10, 15-11 on Saturday night.  In my recollection, Friday night's
match was Penn State's second-toughest defense of their current record home
winning streak.  Saturday night's match was _the_ toughest.

Game-by-game ...

Friday Game 1: UT takes a 10-3 lead with tough serving, and shaky Penn
State passing.  Penn State comes back to within 11-8, but UT wins 15-9.

Game 2: Penn State takes the big 10-3 lead and holds on to win 15-7.

Game 3: No contest, 15-1, PSU.  Only one hitting error for the Lions, on a
UT block.

Game 4: Looks like it's going to be easy as PSU takes an 8-2 lead.  But
then their passing woes return and they shank three straight serve
receives; Texas eventually ties the score at 8 and then again at 12 and 13.
  But when the going gets tough ... Lauren Cacciamani recorded ten kills in
the game (22 for the match) and Katie Schumacher added 5 (12 for the match)
and PSU won on the second match point.  UT outblocked PSU 10-9 for the
match.

Saturday Game 1: Cacciamani and Schumacher combine for 12K in the game,
Penn State starts fast (8-0), Texas wakes up a little before its over but
can't make it close.

Game 2:  Once again, any illusions that it was going to be easy were dashed
by a solid performance by the 'Horns.  When she was on, Texas' MB Erin
Aldrich was the most dominating player on the court, jumping through the
ceiling and hitting over the Penn State block.  Texas leads 10-2; Penn
State begins a comeback, tieing it at 12 on four service points by Bonnie
Bremner; Texas scores the last three points to tie the match at 1 game
apiece.

Game 3: Close early, then six straight PSU points (Cacciamani's serve) make
it 10-3, and PSU extends the lead to 12-3 before Texas begins a big
comeback.  UT got it to within 12-10, but Kalna Miller (PSU defensive
specialist) served the last three points for the win.

Game 4:  By a good margin the best game of the weekend.  Finally both teams
were at the top of their games at the same time and neither suffered a bad
spell.   Close throughout, no one had more than a 2 point lead until the
very end.  UT lead 10-8, and to be honest, Penn State was lucky to win this
game.  The Lions got the benefit of about three close touch and net calls
(and UT coach Jim Moore is kinda funny to watch when he doesn't like a
call); and at 12-11, Schumacher was stuffed, but the ball bounced off her
head back over the net, and Penn State soon got the side out.  Carrie
Schonveld came up big in this game, with six kills, some of them at
critical junctures.  Nadia Edwards wasn't so fortunate ... UT had her
number (it's 6, by the way) and rejected her five times in the game.  This
was a close, even, nerve-wracking game; PSU finally won on a Cacciamani
block and a UT hitting error.  Again, Texas outblocked PSU, 15-12, for the
match.  For Texas, Aldrich recorded 17K and 8 blocks in the match, and for
PSU, Cacciamani led with 24K.

Next up for the #2 Nittany Lions is the annual trip to Michigan to take on
the Spartans and Wolverines.  The Longhorns start the Big 12 season with
Kansas and Texas A&M.

OK. It's the Denver Pioneers. 15-3 15-3 16-18 15-5.

First ball side-out efficiency:

1st game: .583
2nd game: .600
3rd game: .343 (with numerous substitutions)
4th game: .600

Nicole Branagh led the Gophs with 19 kills, Linda Shudlick added 13,
Wichert and Aschenbrener 11 apiece.

The Gophers will win this year's Diet Coke Classic. They play Navy later
tonite, and, with all respect to our armed forces, this will be a
mismatch.

Branagh has moved into 6th place on the U's all-time kill list.

Friday night is Wisconsin, at home. Yes, it's the first game of the Big
Ten season, but this is almost a must-win if the Gophers plan to contend
for a top 3-4 finish. Wisconsin is going to get better as the season
progresses, but they have to be down right now after the thumping in
Nebraska.

Anyhow, the locals cruised this evening to a 15-2 15-11 15-6 victory
over Montana State. You couldn't ask for more balance in their offense:
Branagh--15 kills (8 in game 3); Fair--12 kills (.833 and did not play
game 3); Linda Shudlick--12 kills (.647); Aschenbrenner--11 kills;
Wichert--9 kills.

OSU faces Temple Sunday at 3 p.m. in free admission match.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 18th ranked Ohio State (5-1) women's volleyball team
defeated Boise State (3-6) in three games, 15-4, 15-5, 15-5 in the home opener
for the Buckeyes. OSU's Rosie Snow scored a match-high 14 kills to extend her
consecutive double-figure kill streak to 27 matches. Sue Calligaris and Shelly
Draeger connected on eight kills each while Katie Virtue and Dana Stearns had
six kills apiece. Boise State's Becky Meek had a team-high 12 kills and Katy
Shepard had a match-high 14 digs for the Boncos.

In game one OSU took advantage of 10 Bronco errors for points for a 15-5 win.
The Buckeyes hit .333 for the game to -.023 for Boise State.

Ohio State gained nine points off Boise State errors along with three OSU ace
serves by Dana Stearns, Anne Botica and Rosie Snow to win 15-5. The Buckeyes hit
.345 to .033 for the Broncos.

Boise State held a 2-1 lead in game three, but the match was tied at two on a
Bronco hitting error. The Buckeyes built up a 5-2 lead, but three OSU errors
tied the match again at five. Ohio State built up a 9-5 lead on two Bronco
errors, a kill by Katie Virtue and an ace serve by Anne Botica. The Buckeyes
picked up additional points off three Boise State errors and kills by Sue
Calligaris and Shelly Draeger closed the game at 15-5, for a 3-0 sweep by Ohio
State. For the game, Ohio State hit .298 to .077 for the Broncos.

Match statistics show Ohio State hitting .298 to .027 for Boise State. OSU had a
55 to 31 advantage in kills and edged the Broncos in blocks, nine to seven and
digs, 43 to 42. The Buckeyes collected five ace serves, not allowing Boise State
an ace in the match.

Ohio State completes its two-match home stand this Sunday by hosting Temple
(4-2) in St. John Arena at 3 p.m. The match is free due to the campus move-in
activities.

Nittany Lions will get tough test from Texas

There were any number of ways the Penn State women's volleyball team
could've spent this weekend.

There was a tournament at Texas that fell through, and, likewise, one at
Temple that didn't pan
out. So the second-ranked Nittany Lions (8-1) are staying home, where they
will play
eighth-ranked Texas (6-0) at 7:30 tonight and Saturday night in Rec Hall.

"It should be a great opportunity to play a very good team early in the
year right before the Big
Ten season starts," Penn State coach Russ Rose said. "It certainly does
simulate a Big Ten
weekend."

Those weekends, which the Nittany Lions will get to experience for the
first time this season
when they visit Michigan State and Michigan next weekend, are sometimes
grueling and always
challenging.

This weekend should be no different.

"Texas is an awfully good team with a great tradition," Rose said. "Texas
has great talent."

But so does Penn State, with All-American candidates Bonnie Bremner, Lauren
Cacciamani and
Carrie Schonveld. The Nittany Lions, after losing their first match of the
season to Florida, have
won eight straight. They also own an NCAA-record 64-match home-winning
streak that dates
back nearly four years.

"We can't worry about that," Longhorn coach Jim Moore said. "We just have
to worry about
playing our best and hoping we can even compete with a team at that level.

"I still think they're the team to beat," he added. "I think they're the
best team in the country. They
play very, very hard. It's very difficult to defeat them."

Rose said his team, since losing to Florida, has been steadily getting
better. Its ball-handling and
defensive pursuit are two areas he said have shown improvement.

"I do feel we are making some progress," he said. "Bonnie is getting in
better shape and is
playing better, and that's critical."

Something else that will be critical for the Nittany Lions this weekend
will be how they defend
the Longhorns' swing offense. It's an attack predicated on precise
movements and deft
ball-handling.

"It puts a lot of pressure on the opponent's blocking," Rose said. "To
neutralize that you have to
serve tough and force them to play defense. For us to have success we need
to have good
ball-handling and try to disrupt their patterns."

Said Moore: "It has the potential to create problems for other teams that
are difficult to solve.
There are a lot of problems to running it, but we hope it can create
problems for the other team."

One Texas player who no doubt will cause some trouble for Penn State is
6-foot-2 senior middle
blocker and All-American candidate Erin Aldrich. She is a world-class high
jumper who has
accumulated five All-American honors and won three NCAA titles.

"She has a superfast arm," Moore said. "She's a natural at it. I said all
along that she had the
potential to be the best volleyball player this country has produced, but
she plays it four months a
year. She's very much a natural volleyball player, but she just doesn't
have any experience."

You told us so. We still should have won.

I believe Missouri took a game and Oregon State 2 from UNI, however. For what
it's worth.

Last year UNI had a robust 25-3 record, including unbeaten in conference
(Missouri Valley) before falling to Indiana in the first round of the
NCAA's.  So this kind of success is nothing new to their program.

UNI is very good.  They have beaten Utah and Oregon St. 3-0 already, and
Utah was a second round team last year and didn't lose a lot this year in
terms of graduating seniors.  In fact, UNI's 3-2 win over Minnesota is the
first time they have lost a set all year.

OSU now prepares for home openers against Boise State and Temple.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The 18th ranked Ohio State (4-1) women's volleyball team
needed only 66 minutes to defeat the Panthers of Pittsburgh 15-0, 15-5, 15-10
Wednesday night in Fitzgerald Field House. Buckeyes Rosie Snow and Dana Stearns
shared match-high kill honors with 13 each while Pittsburgh native Jen Flynn
added 10 kills and a match-high 11 digs. Pitt's Jennifer Nickels had a team-high
seven kills for the Panthers with Stacy Renick adding six.

The Buckeyes blanked the Panthers in game one allowing Pitt only 10 serves in
the game. OSU scored the first nine points off eight Pittsburgh errors and an
ace serve by OSU's Jen Flynn. After several sideouts, Ohio State scored six
consecutive points to take the game 15-0. OSU put together three kills by Rosie
Snow, two from Suzie Stiling and one from Flynn for the six-point run. The
Buckeyes hit .571 for the game, having only three errors while Pitt hit -.077.

Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead in game two off an OSU hitting error. OSU took a 2-1
lead on a Jen Flynn and and an ace serve by Flynn. Ahead 3-2, the Buckeyes
scored points on two Shelly Draeger kills, and kills by Dana Stearns and Suzie
Stiling. Stiling also added an ace serve in the to push the lead to 7-2. OSU's
hitting errors cut the lead to 7-4, but a Rosie Snow kill, a block by Katie
Virtue and Stiling and a Pitt error pushed the OSU lead to 10-4. A Pitt hitting
error, Kills by Stearns and Snow and an ace by Brianne Spiers pushed the lead to
14-5. Angelee Abbring's kill finished of the game at 15-5. OSU hit .382 in the
game to .120 for Pitt.

Two kills by Rosie Snow and one by Jen Flynn and a Pitt ball handling error put
OSU up 4-0 in game three. At 4-1 OSU added points on kills by Katie Virtue and
Snow to make the score 6-1. OSU's Dana Stearns' kill put OSU up 7-3. Pitt then
outscored OSU 4-1 with kills by Tari Boutin, Carrie Norris and Jenna Birkel and
an OSU hitting error to close to within one at 8-7. A Pitt ball handling error
made the lead two at 9-7, but an OSU hitting error closed the gap to 9-8. The
Buckeyes expanded the lead to 11-8 on a kill by Sue Calligaris and a block by
Suzie Stiling and Calligaris. Two OSU hitting errors cut the Buckeye lead to
11-10, but a Pitt error and an Angelee Abbring kill put OSU up 13-10. OSU's
Calligaris hit an ace serve to set up match point at 14-10 and a Pitt error
ended the game in favor of OSU, 15-10. The Buckeyes hit .389 for the game to
.344 for Pittsburgh.

The Buckeyes outhit the Panthers .429 to .145 in the match. OSU had a 42 to 14
advantage in digs and scored seven aces to one for Pitt. Pittsburgh did outblock
the Buckeyes five to two.

OSU's blanking of Pittsburgh in game one was the first time since early in the
1997 season went OSU put a 15-0 game two blanking on Tennessee at the Arby's
Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. That was sixty matches ago.

Buckeye Rosie Snow, with 13 kills tonight, extended her streak of double-figure
kill matches to 26. She now 41 double-figure kill matches in her career.

Ohio State, after five consecutive road matches, will host Boise State (2-5) in
the OSU home opener on Friday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena. The
Buckeyes will then face Temple (3-2) Sunday at 3 p.m.

UNI was impressive. Played outstanding defense, did more with
"out-of-system" rallies than the Gophers, seemed to be mentally stronger
at the end.

That being said, this was a match the Gophers could have won if not for
some all too frequent runs by the Panthers.

Minnesota broke open a tight game 1 from 11-11 to 14-11 only to see UNI
battle back and serve for the match at 15-14. The Gophers recovered and
won 17-15.

Minnesota jumped to leads of 5-0, 6-1 and 7-2 before Alexandra Auker
served two aces during a 5-0 run which included two Minnesota hitting
errors and a Panther block. Just like that it's 7-7. Her next rotation
broke a 10-10 tie with 3 more points to 13-10.

Game 3 had a similar run, this one even more nightmarish: Auker served 4
aces in a 7-point run which blew open a 4-3 game to 11-3. The Gophers
contributed 2 more hitting errors during this run. To their credit, the
Gophers battled back to 11-8, but they never were closer.

Game 4 was the Gopher's strongest of the match as they erased an early
0-3 deficit and led 9-3. Momentum probably slipped away, however, when
UNI pulled to within 13-12 before losing 15-12.

In the rally game, it was Ms. Auker again serving UNI from 7-5 to 12-5.
A valiant comeback (basically impossible in rally score) brought the
Gophers as close as 11-13, but the damage had been done.

Nicole Branagh had 27 kills for the Gophers and Kim McCaffrey 27 for
UNI.

Credit is due to UNI for a fine match, but this was a bad loss for the
home team. Minnesota just didn't raise their level of play high enough to
respond to the challenge. Serve receive...well...ouch.

Almost 2000 fans packed the Rochester Century High School.

We're not there yet...and Wisconsin match is only 9 days away.

I took the short mosey to Pittsburgh tonight to see the Buckeyes take on
the Panthers.  Ahh, Pitt ... starting the match a half hour before the
posted time, causing me to miss the start of G1 ... a really lame mascot
... a PA announcer who makes Homer Simpson noises every time the opposition
makes a mistake ... lots of half-naked guys in the stands screaming for no
apparent reason ...

OK, OK, to the match.  OSU won fairly easily, 15-0, 15-5, 15-10.  Pitt
became more confident as the match wore on, and on three occasions in the
third game came within one point (last at 11-10), but couldn't tie it up.
OSU's freshman Katie Virtue is already a bona fide Big Ten starting setter.
  The Buckeyes'll definitely be near the top in the conference this year.

Also from the web: Nebraska has just completed a sweep of Wisconsin in
Lincoln, 15-5, 15-9, 18-16.

Michigan State University junior middle blocker Jessica Sanborn is the Big
Ten Player of the Week for September 13.  Sanborn was named MVP of the UMass
Motorola Invitational last weekend after averaging 4.53 kills, 0.69 block
assists and 1.46 digs per game with an impressive .616 attack percentage.
She led the Spartans to wins over New Hampshire, Southern Miss, Seton Hall
and UMass. She had a career-high 18 kills against Seton Hall, 15 kills with
no errors against Southern Miss, 14 kills and six block assists against
UMass and 12 kills and seven digs against UNH. She totaled 59 kills and only
six errors for the whole tourney.

Hello, everyone:

     I'm John Oravis, and I'm a University of Minnesota (Golden Gopher)
Women's Volleyball fan.  I've been a season ticket holder for about 5 or 6
seasons now, a volleyball booster for 4 years, and a booster club officer
for two years. I'm currently the president of the Golddiggers Women's
Volleyball booster club.

     I'm looking forward to reading some great stories and insights on other
Big Ten teams in the toughest conference of NCAA Division I Women's
Volleyball.

MSU went 4-0 on the weekend to win the UMass Invitational.

MSU defeated New Hampshire 3-0 (15-6, 15-8, 15-10)
MSU defeated Southern Mississippi Univ 3-0 (15-3, 15-5, 15-8)
MSU defeated Seton Hall 3-1 (15-1, 12-15, 15-5, 15-3)
MSU defeated UMass 3-0 (15-5, 15-12, 15-11)

Junior middle Jessica Sanborn was named the MVP of the tournament, while
junior outside hitter Sarah Gustin and junior setter Christie Landry
were named to the all-tournament team.

Saturday night, #2 Penn State defeated #24 Kansas State, 15-5, 15-9, 15-10.
  The Penn State block looked REAL good after struggling somewhat in earlier
matches this season.  Just like old times in Happy Valley.  PSU outblocked
KSU 15-2 in the match, with all the starters contributing to that total.

This was the final match of the Penn State Invitational.  Katie Schumacher
was named the tournament MVP; she led the Lions with 12 kills vs. KSU and
contributed four blocks.

In the "bronze medal" match, UNC-Charlotte (backup setter: Lindsay
Schonveld, sister of PSU starting OH Carrie) came back from 0-2 down to
defeat Toledo, 15-9 in the fifth.  It was the second straight week that the
penultimate match of the tournament hosted by PSU featured a team
recovering from 0-2 to win.

Next up for Penn State: they continue their tour against the top of the Big
Twelve (previously having played Nebraska) against Texas, with two matches
at Rec Hall next Friday and Saturday.  Stat of the week: Penn State has won
138 of its last 139 games in NCAA matches held in Rec Hall.

Ohio State Women's Volleyball Defeats Houston In Four Games

Dana Stearns has match-high 18 kills in win.

Los Angeles, Calif. - The Ohio State (3-1) women's volleyball team defeated
Houston (3-3) 15-7, 6-15, 15-6, 15-12 at Loyola Marymount's Gersten Pavilion
Saturday. OSU's Dana Stearns had a match-high 18 kills, while Jen Flynn added
15, Shelly Draeger 11 and Rosie Snow 10. The Cougars received a team-high 15
kills from Jennifer Wittenburg with Stephanie Heiskell adding 12 and 10 each
from Jillian King and Michelle Frazier.

Ohio State won games one and three with 15-7 and 15-6 scores, respectively.
Houston took game two with a 15-6 mark. The Buckeyes held on to capture game
four with a 15-12 score despite only hitting .167 for the game.

Match statistics favored Houston in hitting percentage, .218 to .188, digs
(50-46) and blocks (10-4). OSU outserved the Cougars nine to two and had a 68 to
58 edge in kills.

OSU Stearns hit .467 for the match and collected 10 digs. Freshman setter Katie
Virtue had 54 assists and a career high 11 digs in the match, her second as the
starting setter.

Outside hitter Jen Flynn was named to the All-Tournament team for the Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes next travel to Pittsburgh for a Wednesday match (7:30 p.m.) before
hosting Boise State (7 p.m.) on Friday and Temple (3 p.m.) Saturday in St. John
Arena.

Rosie Snow records 25 kills

Los Angeles, Calif. - The Ohio State (2-1) women's volleyball team dropped a 3-2
decision to 28th ranked Loyola Marymount (4-1) at the Furama Volleyball Classic
on the campus of Loyola Marymount. Rosie Snow had a team high 25 kills for the
Buckeyes with Shelly Draeger and Jen Flynn adding 16 kills each with Suzie
Stiling collecting 13.

Lion Sarah McFarland put down 52 kills in the match for Loyola. Lydia Day added
13 and Allison Gustorf had 10.

Ohio State won game on 15-9, but lost games two and three, 11-15 and 12-15,
respectively. The Buckeyes tied the match at two games each with a 16-14 win in
game four. OSU could not hold the momentum in the rally scoring fifth game
falling 8-15.

Loyola Marymount hit .294 for the match to .241 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes had
the edge in blocks, nine to five and in ace serves, eight to five. The Lions
edged OSU in digs, 55 to 52.

Freshman setter Katie Virtue had a career-high 67 assists as the setter of
record for the Buckeyes. Outside hitter Jen Flynn had a season high 16 kills in
the match, two shy of her career high of 18 set in 1996 at Northwestern. The
match marked the first time since her freshman season the she played an entire
match at the hitting position.

Ohio State completes its West coast play Saturday morning when they face Houston
(3-2) at 10 a.m. pacific.

The Spartans won both of their matches on day one of the UMass Invitational,
defeating New Hampshire and Southern Mississippi 3-0.  MSU had good
contributions from all players, but Jessica Sanborn hit a near-record .882 in 17
attempts against Southern Mississippi.

I'd like to welcome the new list members we've gotten in the past couple
days ... puts the total subscribership at over 40.  The surge was largely
due to letting the Penn State booster club people know about the list.  So
if you're a fan of another school with a booster club or something similar,
let 'em know.

In the meantime, I've tabulated how the Big Ten is doing against various
other conferences.  Overall, Big Ten teams are 25-16 so far.  We're doing
best against the Missouri Valley Conference (5-0) and worst against the Big
West (0-2).  I'll send an updated tabulation with the weekly standings next
Monday.

I didn't keep stats and the scoreboard was not displaying them either.
However,

Good news: a win.

Bad news: Nicole may have set a new Gopher record for number of times
blocked in a single match. At least ten times. Probably more. Toss in
5-6 hitting errors and there's no way she was positive for the match.

Good news: Gophers still won handily with their main offensive weapon
having an off night. Nic also held up pretty well passing serve (and
they were definitely targetting her). This will be a common tactic...

Bad news: Steph Hagen has injured her ankle (in practice) and will be
out for a couple of weeks.

Good news: Charnette Fair played tonite, and was impressive offensively.
Also gives Heather Baxter a chance to play.

Bad news: Yvonne Wichert took a deflection (off Nicole) to the old kopf
and was pretty much wooziness defined for most of the night.

Good news: She rode her bike past me as I was walking to my car and
seemed to be steering it straight and true.

Bad news: she was still wearing her uniform and a t-shirt and may be a
candidate for pneumonia.

Good news: Linda Shudlick had a solid game blocking, hitting and
passing. Lisa Axel started and passed serve well. Lisa Aschenbrenner
played fairly well, as did Susan Shudlick.

So-so news: Lindsey's had better games. Shelmadine had an assist.

Tomorrow they fly out to Oregon, after flying back here from Hawaii.
Yikes.
