Buckeyes Open Season with Sweep of Rider at the Tribe Invitational in
Williamsburg, Va.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (1-0) women's volleyball squad opened the 2009
season with a 3-0 (25-7, 25-9, 25-11) sweep of Rider (0-1) in the opening match
of the Tribe Invitational in Williamsburg, Va. Buckeye Katie Dull posted a
match-high 11 points against the Broncs with a match-high nine kills, an ace
serve and two assist blocks. OSU freshmen Emily Danks and Amanda Peterson scored
9.5 and 9.0 points respectively. Danks recorded five kills, four ace serves and
a block assist while Peterson had four kills and five ace serves. Katelyn
Thompson had a team-high 4.5 points for Rider with four kills and an assist
block.
Ohio State opened set one of the match with a kill from Dull and an ace serve
from Kelli Barhorst. Leading, 5-2, the Buckeyes scored the next seven points to
open a 12-2 margin. The run included three kills and an ace serve from Dull, a
kill from Anna Szerszen and two Rider errors. At 14-5, the Buckeyes scored four
consecutive points including three ace serves by Peterson to open an 18-5 lead.
The Buckeyes closed out the set with a 5-0 run that included a Dull-Barhorst
block, two Rider errors, a Kristen Dozier kill and a set point kill by Dull for
the 25-7 victory. Ohio State hit .368 for the set to -.056 for the Broncs.
Rider opened set two with a Thompson kill for a 1-0 lead. Buckeye kills from
Barhorst and Danks, a Dozier-Dull block and a Broncs error gave Ohio State a 4-1
lead. The Buckeyes scored the next 11 points to open a 15-2 lead. Danks served
four aces during the run that included two kills from Dozier and kills from Dull
and Peterson. Leading, 22-9, a kill from Danks and two Rider errors ended the
set at 25-9 to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .238
for the set to -.200 for Rider.
Set three opened with the Buckeyes scoring the first seven points. The run
included kills from Dull, Dozier and Danks, a Danks-Dozier block and three Rider
errors. At 8-2, a Broncs error and kills from Peterson and Szerszen made it
11-2. Errors by both teams made it 12-3. Two kills each from Peterson and
Szerszen, one by Barhorst and a Chelsea Noble ace serve expanded the lead to
18-3. Leading 21-9, kills from Szerszen and Barhorst and a Rider error set match
point at 24-9. Rider, with an Alex Chapla kill and a Brittany Hayes block
stopped two match points to make it 24-11. A kill from Danks gave Ohio State a
25-11 win in the set and a 3-0 victory for the match. The Buckeyes hit .333 for
the set to -.033 for Rider.
For the match, Ohio State hit .314 to -.088 for Rider. The Buckeyes had a 33-10
margin in kills and a 14-1 advantage in ace serves. OSU's Peterson posted a
match-high five aces while Danks added four. Ohio State had a 36-24 edge in digs
with Amy Jeary posting a match-high eight for Rider. Dull recorded a team-high
seven digs for the Buckeyes. At the net, OSU had a 4-3 edge in team blocks.
OSU's Dozier posted a match-high three blocks with a solo and two assists.
Peterson recorded a match-high 22 assists in the match for Ohio State while
Elyse Grassmuck had a team-high seven for Rider.
Ohio State continues play at the Tribe Invitational this afternoon when they
