Nittany Lions will take on seven NCAA Regional Semifinalists from a year ago
University Park, Pa., May 10, 2006 - Matches against 11 teams that competed in the 2006 NCAA Tournament, including seven that reached the Regional Semifinals, highlight the 2007 Penn State women's volleyball schedule.
Among its opponents, Penn State will play defending national champion Nebraska, national runner-up Stanford, regional finalists Minnesota, Purdue, Ohio State and Texas, along with regional semifinalists Wisconsin and Purdue and NCAA Tournament participants St. John's, Michigan State and Cal Poly.
The Nittany Lions hold a 331-76 (.813) record over opponents it will face during the 2007 regular season, including a 277-43 (.866) Big Ten record since joining the conference for the 1991 season. The slate also features first-time meetings with St. John's and Hartford in the sport of women's volleyball.
Penn State opens the schedule on Aug. 24-25, hosting consecutive home matches with Texas, who finished last season ranked seventh in the nation. The Nittany Lions then take to the road for the Nebraska Labor Day Tournament to face No. 17 Cal Poly on Friday, Aug. 31 in Lincoln, Neb., before taking on the No. 1 Huskers on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 3:00 p.m. at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.
The squad will return home to host St. John's, Virginia Commonwealth and Colgate in the Penn State Classic on Sept. 7-8 before heading to the Yale Classic on Sept. 14-15 to face the host Bulldogs along with Hartford and No. 2 Stanford. The Nittany Lions open up Big Ten play at home with Michigan State and Northwestern on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21-22.
Penn State returns all but three players from last season's 32-3 Big Ten Champion squad that advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals. The Nittany Lions will be looking to replace opposite Cassy Salyer and defensive players Kris Brown and Ashley Fidler who each played in more than 80 games last season. However, Penn State returns perhaps the best outside hitter duo in the nation with 2006 AVCA First Team All-Americans Nicole Fawcett and Megan Hodge, along with 2006 AVCA Second Team All-American middle hitter Christa Harmotto, 2005 AVCA Second Team All-American middle hitter Melissa Walbridge, Big Ten All-Freshman setter Alisha Glass and 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year outside hitter Kate Price, along with the team leader in digs, libero Roberta Holehouse. In addition, 2006 Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year opposite/middle hitter Blair Brown, who sat out last season with a redshirt, will be eligible, along with five-time New York Gatorade Player of the Year libero Alyssa D'Errico and middle hitter Arielle Wilson, who is ranked seventh nationally by Prepvolleyball.com.
