Penn State Selected As Host Site For
2007 Women's Volleyball NCAA Tournament Regional
Rec Hall chosen as one of four sites for December 7-8 competition
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., April 18, 2007 - Penn State University and Rec Hall have been chosen as one of four host sites for the 2007 NCAA Women's Volleyball Regional Championship to be held Dec. 7-8, the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Committee announced. Penn State joins the UW Field House and the University of Wisconsin, Maples Pavilion and Stanford University, and the Stephen S. O'Connell Center and the University of Florida as the four pre-determined sites.
"We are excited to showcase our regional competition at these four outstanding sites," said Kelly Andrews, chair of the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Committee and Senior Woman Administrator at the University of Toledo. "The volleyball committee felt this year's selections were capable of enhancing the student-athlete experience through the excitement and enthusiasm of their fans as well as continue to create national interest in the regional events."
The Nittany Lions have hosted at least one round of the NCAA Tournament in 21 of the possible 27 years, including the last 18 consecutive seasons. The Nittany Lions have played 35 NCAA Tournament matches at Rec Hall since 1981, boasting a 32-3 record in those contests. The last time Penn State and Rec Hall hosted an NCAA Regional Championship was in 2005, also hosting in 1999, 1998 and 1997.
"We are very honored to be one of the four chosen sites for a 2007 NCAA Women's Volleyball Regional," said Penn State Director of Athletics Tim Curley. "Penn State has a great tradition of volleyball, both men's and women's, and we are very excited to showcase this event once again. We take great pride in putting together high-caliber events that create a positive experience for both the fans and teams involved and I have great confidence that the 2007 NCAA Regional Championship will meet that high expectation and also feature some great volleyball."
Penn State is one of only three teams to participate in all 26 NCAA Tournaments since its inception in 1981, joining Stanford and UC Santa Barbara. The Nittany Lions hold a 48-25 all-time NCAA Tournament record, including five trips to the NCAA Semifinals and one National Championship (1999). The four-time defending Big Ten Champion Nittany Lions finished the 2006 slate with an overall record of 32-3 and return all but one starter to the lineup, including four AVCA All-Americans in middle hitter Melissa Walbridge (Yardley, Pa.), middle hitter Christa Harmotto (Aliquippa, Pa.), outside hitter Nicole Fawcett (Zanesfield, Ohio) and outside hitter Megan Hodge (Durham, N.C.).
"As always, we appreciate the opportunity the University has given us by hosting this event," said head coach Russ Rose, who has compiled an overall record of 891-157 in his 28 seasons at Penn State. "As a team, we hope to have the type of season that allows us to generate increased fan interest should we advance that far in the tournament. Penn State has always supported volleyball in a great way and this is another indication that shows that history."
Fans are encouraged to call 814-863-1000 or 1-800-833-5533 to put their names on a mailing list for ticket applications. Information will also be sent with season ticket applications. The on-sale date and ticket prices are pending.
The 2007 NCAA Championship will be held in Sacramento, Calif., at ARCO Arena on Dec. 13 and 15. The 2008 NCAA Championship will be held in Omaha, Neb., at the Qwest Center on Dec. 18 and 20. The 2009 NCAA Championship will be held in Tampa Bay, Fla., at the St. Pete Times Forum on Dec. 17 and 19.
