Penn State Women's Volleyball Ranked No. 2 in Preseason CSTV/AVCA Poll
Nittany Lions take on nine opponents listed in the initial rankings

University Park, Pa., Aug. 10, 2006 - The Penn State women's volleyball team will begin the 2006 campaign ranked second in the country, according to the CSTV/AVCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Nittany Lions received 17 first-place votes in the poll to finish with 1,407 points. Nebraska sits atop the rankings with 14 first-place votes and 1,431 total points while Washington, Stanford and Florida round out the top five.

Penn State returns all but three players from last season's 31-3 Big Ten Champion squad that posted an unblemished 20-0 record in conference action to capture its third consecutive league title. The Nittany Lions opened preseason camp Thursday morning.

"It's great that our program is held is such high esteem," said head coach Russ Rose, who is beginning his 28th season in Happy Valley. "We'll do our best to fill the gaps left by graduation. I believe we have several pieces of the puzzle and we're going to work hard to prepare for a challenging season."

The Nittany Lions will face nine teams listed in the initial CSTV/AVCA poll, including six ranked in the top 25 in the nation. Penn State will square off against No. 8 Texas, No. 9 Wisconsin, No. 13 Missouri, No. 16 Purdue, No. 22 Minnesota and No. 23 Ohio State while also facing LSU, Northwestern and Duke, who received votes in the poll.

Penn State will be looking to replace three-time All-America setter Sam Tortorello, 2006 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year libero Kaleena Walters and middle and right side hitter Kim Holm. However, the Nittany Lions return 2006 AVCA National Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-America outside hitter Nicole Fawcett, AVCA Second Team All-America middle hitter Melissa Walbridge, First Team All-Big Ten middle hitter Christa Harmotto, 2003 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Cassy Salyer and 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Kate Price. In addition, Penn State adds Gatorade National Player of the Year Megan Hodge, Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year Blair Brown, Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year Alisha Glass and Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year Jessica Yanz.

The Nittany Lions open up the 2006 slate at the LSU Classic in Baton Rouge, La., against Nicholls State, Rice and the host Tigers on Aug. 25-26 and then host the Penn State Invitational on Sept. 1-2 with Eastern Kentucky, West Virginia and Duke.
