RE: [bigtenvb] men's playoffs

Men's Volleyball actually holds a "National Collegiate Championship" meaning that any of the 80 schools from each of the three divisions has a shot at competing for the title. During the regular season, weekly awards and the like are differentiated between Division I/II (36 schools) and Division III (44 schools), but say if Juniata were to win the EIVA title from the East, the Eagles would compete for the national title with the winners from the MIVA, MPSF and the at-large team as it is set up now.

Divisional Breakdown:
Division I: 23 schools
Division II: 13 schools
Division III: 44 schools

IIRC, there is a set formula that the NCAA uses to drive how many
participants are in the playoffs.  D-I men's VB has such a small
population (I think it's now less than 30 D-I schools) that there is
only a final 4.

<<They really should expand the playoffs to allow more highly ranked
teams to compete. >>

I understand that there are factors like total number of men's programs
and the all-pervasive financial considerations, but I'd think they could
expand the field to at least six.  Have the conference champs and
_three_ at-large teams come together for a three-day tournament, with
the two top-rated champions getting byes in the first round.
