As far as I can tell, we are saying the same thing. You reduce variance by,
as I said, reducing "the lengths of the extremely long matches" (and, as you
added, by increasing the lengths of the short ones). The extremely long ones
are most likely to produce new kill records, thus the current records are
likely to remain unchallenged.
