Chris - the goal of RPS was not necessarily to reduce match length - it was
to make game length, and indirectly match length _more predictable_, not
necessarily shorter (or longer, for that matter). The goal was to have most
matches fit into a 110 to 130 minute window, predictably. Reduce the
variance of game length. Some, of course, will be outside the window; that
is true regardless of system.
You probably also remember both the experimental Big Ten system (1996 IIRC -
Doug probably remembers) and also Dr. Erbe's prototype 'system' - which he
used a few times at MSU, as well as later (1999) trying to get the D-I
coaches to accept it - they did not. Erbe's system involved a clock and
win-by-1, among other things. It was interesting to say the least.
