Andrea Gonzalez and Chris Schaeffer both also had very good jump serves for the Gophers and both also overlapped Sharon Oesterling in their years playing for Minnesota.

 

Both were well above average offensively, defensively, and with their serving.

 

I was just imagining Andrea and Chris with the Minnesota teams of the past couple of years in combination with the strong MB play the Gopher's have had recently and Cassie Bussie as a dominant OP.

I think the passing is better.  Coaches train their passers constantly and well.  That's most of it.

 

Other factors to consider:

 

* Remember, back in the early 80s, the ball handling was called a LOT tighter than it is today.  Some aces were the result of a whistle that would not sound today. 

* The advent of the jump serve in the mid-late 80s.  The first player I saw use it in competition was Sharon Oesterling of Minnesota.  It took players a while to adjust to it; by the early 90s, the receivers had it figured out.  Notably, the only recent player on the list, Lindsey Berg (also of Minnesota) had a wicked jumper.

I wonder what (if anything) it means that the majority of the players on the career aces total list, with the exceptions of Lindsey Berg and Jean Shintz, all played in the 80s.

 

Was the serving more effective in the 80s?

Is the passing better since the 80s?

A combination of both?
