Need a little help from my friends. Can any one point me to
resources where I can find a reputable engine rebuilder to go over
the 500 c.i. in my 1972 Eldo Convertible? How about a transmission
shop, as well? Want to do a bang up job so this baby goes another
100,000 to car shows in style.
I'd appreciate pointers to any good resources for other restoration
work.
My thanks to every one, and keep enjoying that smooth and powerful
ride!

I'm about to get three 500s for free(ha, beat that for a good deal! :-
D ) Problem is, none of em have a tranny. I want to use an auto,
since I won't have to mess with mix-n-matching flywheels, clutches
and trannys. The real problem for me is, I don't know what tranny(s)
I can use. And I need it to be a RWD tranny, since this is all going
in a 76 Dodge D350 dually - my tow rig
I'm prepared to get the parts needed for a manual tranny, but I'm not
sure what hydraulic setup I'd need. The guy I'm getting the engines
from says he has a good chance of getting me an SM420 for 100 bucks,
but that leaves a flywheel, clutch, and hydraulic system. The
bellhousing is also something he's going to give me, since he says he
has plenty
If anyone can help me out, not only would I greatly appreciate it,
but I'll be taking pictures, and write a tech article on how the swap
went.
This is so cool, I've been wanting a 500 for YEARS!
Hello All,
I'm getting some 3/3" header flanges cut. If anyone wants a set,
let me know. Cost will depend on how many pairs I get cut. Should
be $30-$40 a pair. No bolt holes.

thanks.

Geez, I should really look before I key. Didn't see your reply
before I posted asking for help again.
I shall get on the timing chain and gears, and valve seals ASAP.
My sincere thanks for the great advice!

Greetings, fellow Big Cube followers. I have a 72' Eldo convertible
with 91,000 original miles on her. Refurbishing her to show quality,
but ... I am concerned as to what I should be looking for
mechanically at this point, with this many miles and years under her
belt.
Is there something that has a tendency to go first? Should I be
looking at any thing in particular that has a reputation for being a
problem?
Any help I can get from this pool of experts will be greatly
appreciated. Thanks for the help in advance!

Hi Ted,
Yes you can, but you will need adapter plates. Find them at:
http://www.pricemotorsport.com/index.html
Then you can get just as crazy as you want. Tunnel ram anyone?

Hi Joe,
Well for a grand I think I'll let some one else take the lead on this
one.
The one thing that bothers me is that with all the extra lift,
stronger valve springs will be required, and that will just make a
weak looking system break sooner.
John
That rocker system sure is interesting. I'd love to see some real world
results. Rest assured that a Cadillac application will not be coming soon.
I may call to see how much a setup costs for my Small Block Chevy.

New guy here. I need an aluminum 4 bbl intake for the 472? What is
the deal with the 460 Ford fitting the 472 Cad. Does it require any
mods? Seems like I saw somewhere that it did. Ted
One of the common strokers is to use a 6.7" or 6.8" Chevy rod on an
offset ground ford crank. The I can get Eagle H beams for $379 and
trw Forged pistons for $219 -$349 . My local crank shop can do the
crank work for under $200.
All of that will be down the road though.

See, that's exactly what I'm talking about. If I could come accross
a Caddy like that I'd do it. I guess being up here in Michigan there
were just more Lincoln and full size Fords being purchased than
Caddy's.

As was already mentioned, the timing chain is a MUST! Unless you know that
it has been changed before, you had better make it a priority.
Valve seals are also a good idea; my '74 had a handful of them in the oil pan
when I pulled it.
Hope that you and your Eldo have many fine years of pampering each other!
Joe
Josh,
Maybe you can have your cake and eat it, too. Bore the 460 .060" (it should
handle it, no problem). Offset grind the crank to a 2.25" journal size.
Get 455 Buick rods (these are forged steel from the factory). Weld the big
end (I forget the dimensions, but the Ford rod is *slightly* thicker than
the Buick rod), machine the small end out to the Ford pin size and Voila! a
503 Ford!!

Sorry guys,
I want to build a big motored light drag car to run 11 flat in the
quarter. I planned on running a 500 cadillac, but there just aren't
any running motors around here (S.E. Michigan). I was looking for a
running 500 motor and 400trans, and small light chassis. I keep

it does have a 8.8" rear end with 4.10 gears and subframe connectors.
The owner took it to a weigh station and it weighs 1,950lbs as it
sits. All for $600 !!!!!!!!!!!!
I also found a 71 or 72 Lincoln with 100,000 miles on it. Runs

Hi, I think you will want to replace the timing chain SOON and if you
have the tools the valve seals should be replaced too. Other than
this there isnt anything that really needs to be changed. You might
want to put an HEI distributor just for reliability.
have fun with your Cad.

I would go with the 460 also. One of the reasons I like the 472/500
is because there are so many of them out here. There are actually
alot of 429/460s here too but are getting expensive. The 460 weighs
more, but with all the aftermarket parts available, like aluminium
heads you can make the 460 lose alot of weight. So if it cheap and
available pick one up! Tell us how the engien goes runs when its done
too!

Greetings, fellow big cubed members. Bought a very clean "garage
queen," red 1972 Eldorado convertible with white leather last Fall.
I'm very proud to be the 2nd owner of this floating dream. Going to
do a little work to her to bring her up to 100%, but her body,
chrome, paint and rag top are absolutely perfect. She's really near
ready for her first car show this summer. 91,000 original miles on

What should I be looking for in that motor with this much mileage and
30 years under her belt. Are these motors tough on timing chains,
oil pumps, or what? Don't want to think about doing a complete tear

go for the 460 if they're plentiful and cheap and 500's are hard to
come by. they're pretty darn comparable if you ask me - a great
engine. i almost went for a 460 too because i saw a pretty good deal

Sorry guys,
I want to build a big motored light drag car to run 11 flat in the
quarter. I planned on running a 500 cadillac, but there just aren't
any running motors around here (S.E. Michigan). I was looking for a
running 500 motor and 400trans, and small light chassis. I keep
looking in the papers and online. NOTHING!!!!!!!
Guess what there are a lot of around me though? Ton's of 460 Ford
trucks and 460 Lincolns with C6 tranny's. There are about 5 places
that build motor mount kits, headers and every thing else you need. I
found a good condition 86 Mustang notch back. No motor or trans but
it does have a 8.8" rear end with 4.10 gears and subframe connectors.
The owner took it to a weigh station and it weighs 1,950lbs as it
sits. All for $600 !!!!!!!!!!!!
I also found a 71 or 72 Lincoln with 100,000 miles on it. Runs
great. Rusty and rotted to heck but my buddy want the 9" rear end and
will buy it from me for$175. I can get the whole car for $350. I'd
have $175 out of my pocket for the motor, trans and anything else I
want from it.
$600 for the Mustang, $175 for the drive-train. There are about 5
places that build motor mount or motor plate kits, headers and every
thing else you need. $500 for the swap parts (Headers, mounts, drive
shaft and the little extra's)that's $1,275 for a fairly clean, semi
unique big block car that should run 14 flat (Remember, the motor
will be pretty much stock) with a good tune up. Then I could build
another motor with good heads, forged pistons and rods for about
$1,800 - $2,000 and then run my 11's.
So,.... unless someone can convince me other wise that is the way i
will go. On another option. A guy put a 500 cad in a 88 Mustang. I'd
like to try that but I still can't find good motors around here!
