Hi all,

I have been really busy, so haven't posted for a while. There are a lot of
things happening with bicycling because of the economy.

How much does the Speed Vest cost? Are low-wage earners able to afford it?
We've got more homeless people, and they definitely can't afford it.

Whether or not some bicyclists use it, we'll still need to educate motorists on
how to safely approach and overtake bicyclists. Due to gas prices, there are a
lot more two-wheelers out there than bicyclists. Also, there will be bicyclists
who don't earn enough to afford the vest.

With all of them, motorists need to use the same skills they would if they saw a
"Bridge Might be Out" sign again. I had a friend tell me he never could tell
how fast two-wheelers are going. So, my advice was to low down by taking your
foot off the gas or, if necessary, putting on the brake a little until you know
what's ahead. Then adjust your speed as needed. If the two-wheeler is slower
than you, give sufficient space so that, when a space opens in the left lane,
you have sufficient space to accelorate and move into the left lane. Kind of
like airplanes having a runway.

Thanks,
Kimberly Cooper
