some years ago i was working for bnsf and being trained as a freight train
conductor.....
some of my duties were working in the yard switching cars
bnsf uses in the yard a remote control engine.....that is i hold in my hands a
box about the size of a small box of chocolates.....
on late after noon switching cars i was watching my teacher bringing back the
engine toward us at about 8 mph ......a young high school kid was crossing the
tracks with his bicycle.....the kid for some unknown reason froze on the track
that the engine was traveling on....i was standing some 20 feet or there abouts
from him...i shouted at him to move .....
i had to come and reach for him to drag him off the track .......he just
froze....
on all of the trains i operated they were a mile long.....and the weight is hard
to imagine that the engine pulls....and has to brake all of that weight...
i cringed when i saw that guy shoot over the tracks with the on coming train
