some years ago i was working for bnsf and being trained as a freight train conductor..... some of my duties were working in the yard switching cars bnsf uses...

... Exactly. People don't realize trains can't stop like cars; they take time to stop because of all the weight. A similar, if less dramatic, dynamic applies...

until you operate a mile long many pieced of 100,000 tons of steel and iron  you develope a great respect ......i remember at night in the yards switching...

While I would agree with you the majority of the time I would add stay off the tracks outside of railroad crossings to be completely correct....
