10-5-05 B.I.G. Meeting Recap

1. Which point-to-point destinations must be more
bicycle friendly/accessible in GSO?

-UNCG Aycock to Northeast corridor
-Guilford College to A&T via UNCG
-Guilford College area to Moses Cone Hospital
-Guilford College area to Friendly Center
-Guilford College area to North Battleground shopping
area
-Guilford College area to Summerfield
-Guilford College area to Sandy Ridge Farmers Market
-Airport area to downtown GSO
-Downtown to Battleground shopping areas
-From UNCG to Jamestown
-Downtown/UNCG to Lawndale
-Connection of bicycle friendly route, hospital to
hospital
-Downtown to Summerfield/Oak Ridge
-Downtown to UNCG for night grad students via Aycock
-Jamestown via High Point Rd
-An alternative to Wendover
-Holden road bike lane (since it's wide enough now)
-East side of GSO? Need for bicycle friendliness on
Lee St, East Market, etc.
-Westridge to Battleground to Friendly
-There are many others, but these seemed to be
recurring

2. Bike/Ped Meetings, urging of B.I.G. presence at
each meeting
10/12: Trotter Recreation Center, 3906 Betula St
10/13: Barber Park Indoor Pavilion, 1500 Dan's Rd
10/19: Summerfield Elementary, 7515 Trainer Drive
10/20: Lawndale Baptist Church, 3505 Lawndale Drive

-People that go to first meeting should let others
know what to expect at subsequent meetings via list
serve

3. Points to make in front of city at meetings:
-Bicycle Advisory Committee
-Bicyclists/Peds/non-motorized transport need to use
major thoroughfares much like cars, do not make us use
all side streets and neighborhoods
-Focus on lanes/routes connecting REAL destinations,
as Shel said, parks are great, but people on bikes
need to get to shopping centers, schools, work, etc.
-More sticking points to be submitted by BIG members
prior to meeting via list serve

4. 2:00 PM DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS TO JUDY DIETRICH
FOR ARTICLE FOR NEWS & RECORD jdietrich1@...

5. Other groups B.I.G. should/could work with:
-High Point group that buys bicycles for children
-Piedmont Land Conservacy
-Piedmont Flyers
-Triad Triathlon
-Fat Tire Society

6. Seek to determine past efforts of the city/plans
in work

7. Homework:
-Think of/visit a city about the size of GSO that has
become bicycle friendly. How did that happen?
-Attend one of the meetings for Bike/Ped if any fits
your schedule
-Try to get more talking points available for everyone
on the list serve

8. Sue will book room at UNCG, she is head of Bike
Me! Coalition at UNCG

NEXT MEETING: Thursday, October 27th, 7:00 PM.
Location info will be available on list serve.
