My colleague- Bob Strack, Associate professor of public health
education at UNCG- is the featured speaker at the forum described
below. He promises that the 'built environment' will be a component
of his talk (and I know he will talk about bike lanes as an
example). I hope many of you will make time to attend.
Thanks,
Mark Schulz

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF THE PIEDMONT TRIAD
Civics 104: Your Health, Your Money, Your Vote
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Greensboro Health and Healthcare series to sponsor community
conversation with Guilford County leaders
GREENSBORO, NC – [date of release] On Tuesday, May 13 th local
leaders will participate in a forum on the role of social
determinants of health. This is the fourth and final session in the
Civics 104 series "Your Health, Your Money, Your Vote." The session
will feature Dr. Robert Strack, Associate Professor in the Department
of Public Health Education at the University of North Carolina at
Greensboro, and a panel discussion with Greensboro Mayor Yvonne
Johnson; Guilford County Department of Public Health Director, Merle
C. Green; Guilford County Schools Board of Education Vice-Chairman,
Mr. Amos Quick; and H. Walker Sanders, President of the Community
Foundation of Greater Greensboro. The panel will be moderated by Mr.
Jeri Rowe of the Greensboro News & Record.
Dr. Strack will present a twist to the notion that personal
responsibility is the single most important solution to common health
problems such as obesity. Commenting on the topic for this session,
titled "Determinants of Health: Is it ME or is it WE?" Dr. Strack
notes that "in spite of common beliefs about the importance of
medical care in maintaining good health, it plays a limited role.
Health practices, which are themselves influenced by the social and
physical environment in which we live, are critical factors. Any
discussion health care of reform, therefore, must include a
conversation about prevention and public health." This session will
offer the citizens of Greensboro and Guilford County an opportunity
to learn the viewpoints of key players on how they hope to foster a
healthy community. An audience question and answer period will
complete the evening's discussion.
The session will be at the Wesley Long Community Education Center,
501 North Elam Avenue, Greensboro. It will be from 7:30 pm to 9:30
pm. Doors open at 7 p.m. and early arrival is recommended.
