As Gas Prices Rise, Cycle To Savings

Posted by: Kerri Hartsfield, Reporter     1 day ago (4/30/2008 11:41:37 PM)

Greensboro --
Kyla Purtell plans to park her Ford Escort and use a bicycle as her primary mode of transportation.

"I don't necessarily need a car," explained the 20-year-old college student. "I work about two miles from here. (At cycles de ORO Bike Shop in Greensboro) I go to school at UNCG, and there's a grocery store like a mile away." She feels a bike will get her to wherever she needs to go. "If not, I can take public transportation."

Between the cost of gas and insurance, Purtell says a car was too costly. Her bike, on the other hand, was a bargain. "This one I found on the side of the road for free," she explained. Once she sells her Ford Escort, Purtell does not plan on buying another car in the near future. "I'll miss it, but I won't miss it too much."

Dale Brown, who owns Cycles de Oro in Greensboro, says an increasing number of customers are interested in bikes for commuting rather than recreation. "Used bikes are excellent choices," he explained. "You can take an old bike that you have and retrofit it with a couple of things and have it quite suitable for commuting."

If you are interested in buying a brand-new bicycle, Brown says there are models designed specifically for commuting which feature bells, headlights, racks, finders and tires that are good for rainy weather. He says bikes typically start around $200 and go up from there.

"Without having to pay for car insurance or gas, I'll probably save about $200 a month, maybe more," said Purtell, who encourages people to start peddling, rather than driving, around town. "The only big challenge would be the physical act of bicycling," she said. "If you're not used to it, it can be pretty tiresome at first." Purtell says started riding bikes again two years ago. "Before that, I didn't bike at all except in middle school."

If you are interested in biking, there is a bike map for the City of Greensboro. It shows which streets are more suitable for biking and where bike lanes are located.
