I have a 2002 Trek 7700FX. Given that the frame is the same one used
that year for Trek's cyclocross bikes, I'm curious as to how
problematic it would be to replace the flat handlebars with road
handlebars. Presumably, this would also entail new shifters and brake
levers. Any suggestions?

I need a bike to commute 10 miles up and down fairly steep hills. I

Hello people
Thought I'd join here to engage in one of my favourite topics.
Cycling! And bike nerdism.
Here's an initial discussion topic: cyclocross frames as the
ultimate road frame.
My old Bianch Axis cyclocross has served me beautifully as a commuter
bike, a loaded touring partner, and, with a quick change of wheels, a
decent ride for long, fast day rides. So much so that I'm strongly
considering having a Seven cyclocross frame made for these purposes.
My question: Anyone out there use a cyclocross as I do? And, for
that matter, any opinions about Seven? (On the latter point, my
mind's pretty well made up.)
Ride on.

I am thinking of buying a LeMond Victoire that comes with Bontrager
Race Lite wheels. I weigh 215 lbs. DOes anyone have experience with
this product. I am worried that the wheels may not hold up with my
weight. Any advice will be appreciated.
Each year since 1999 I have ridden my bicycle in support of the
Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots "Bikes or Bust" program. You may
remember from past years that the Albany Radio Staion B-100 (100.3
FM) each year has a crane lift an RV up above the Wal Mart Parking
lot and a DJ and a Marine go up in it for 100 hours.
The idea is to collect as much money and bicycles as possible during
the 100 hours they are up there. These bicycles are given to
children who would likely never get a new bike without this program.
Virtually always the bikes from this program are the first new bike
that these children will receive, possibly the only new bike they
receive.
Do you remember your first new bike? If so then you can definitely
understand.
Each year the ride begins on Wednesday at the site of the RV,
usually the Albany Georgia Super Walmart. Then it goes to Sylvester
and on to Moultrie the first day. The last day is usually a ride
from Moultrie to Albany beginning early in the morning and leaving
from the "Hog Pen" (Colquitt County High School Packers Stadium)near
Willie J. Williams Middle School. Thursday and Friday ride plans
have not been completed yet, but one day will likely be in and
around Tifton and one will be near or around Ocilla Georgia.
It is a relatively slow ride about 10 mph average overall. Some
great riding in some of the most beautiful country in Georgia or
anywhere in the US. Ride with me and you will also meet some of the
most generous and finest people in the US also.
December 10, 11, 12, 13 will be dates for the ride. Contact me at
229-891-2879 or email me at bmgfitness@...
Have a great day and keep riding,
Jerry Goodwin

Thanks but I had tried the Giant site before joining several bike Yahoo groups. Their web site offers no real contact info. I've contacted several Giant USA dealers and have received no help. Each Giant group works independently of each other and will not offer any help in contacting another group. After I spoke to "Giant USA" the only help they could offer was for me to try and contact a Giant dealer in the Netherlands or Belgium which I've also done and have received no help or response from, for that matter. So much for thinking I was buying a "world wide" bike while in Europe. very frustrating.
Try going to the source. I did a search at msn for giant bicycles and got the website for Giant. Thet should be able to help you loacte any parts or may have them in stock. Try this link. There are all sorts of links on the site for support or for parts. http://www.giant-bicycle.com/splash-2003-august.asp
Hope this helps.

New type of DIY alarm on eBay now
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?
ViewItem&item=2437779644
UNDEFEATED ALARM-REMOTE PAGER-INTERCOM DIY PLANS
INNOVATIVE UNDEFEATED DIY BIKE/CAR LOCK-ALARM-INTERCOM PLANS FOR SALE
ALSO FOR A SCOOTER, MOTORCYCLE OR MOPED
WHY SPEND $300+ ON A VEHICLE ALARM?
WHAT IS FOR SALE?
Detailed plans, material list, on how to assemble a device that will:
inform you that your `cycle or car has been tampered with; and,
allow you to hear what is happening to your bike/car; and,
depending on your component choice, a programmable warn-away feature;
and,
two-way voice communication allows you to warn a thief that police is
coming.
Think of it as a "baby monitor" motion-sensing alarm for your car,
bike, motorbike, or motorcycle.
WHY BUILD THIS DEVICE?
You park/commute in a risky or tough area
You don't want to be disappointed with your insurer's blue-book
replacement value after the theft
You want to avoid the feeling of being violated when a bike is stolen
SUMMARY OF ADVANTAGES:
Peace of Mind
Pages you when bike (or anything else attached to it) is moved
Programmable sensitivity
Wireless, with practical ¼-mile range or more
Full cost to build: Only $60-$140
Two-way voice communication
No soldering or wiring necessary (unless you want to hard-wire to
your vehicle's battery)
Distinguish false alarm instantly
Weights under 2 lbs.
Complements a U-lock or disc lock perfectly
REQUIREMENTS:
A budget of at least $60 to buy the necessary components
For bicycles: A pannier or under-the-saddle tool bag
For motorcycles: A small "shoe-space" enough for the device to be
hidden
MY STORY:
I've been a bike/moped commuter for three years, parking my `cycles
downtown, and in our eastside apartment basement. Most people like me
lose one bike a year. I've owned four bikes costing $600-$1,200 each,
since 1999, and haven't lost one yet because of this Do-It-
Yourself "lock-alarm-intercom."
The last attempt on my bikes was at one 1:30am where thieves took a
tarp off, triggered the motion-sensor, continued on to remove
accessories. Apparently, they were not deterred from a 120dB alarm,
because they knew sound wouldn't travel far underground, in that
basement. However, they ran off when my voice from the bike
boomed, "Hey you down there! The police has been called! I'm coming
down right now! Yyou're gonna' be in trouble!" When I arrived in the
basement, the thieves had dropped everything. Nothing had been stolen
from my four bikes and two bike trailers loaded with nutri-bars and
spare tubes. These thieves thought they were prepared for everthing,
but didn't expect a `talking bike.' Now, this is high-tech protection!
With the poverty out there, drug-addiction, and cuts to welfare, it
is unfortunate that some have to resort to crime. However, my
military-man father taught me that it is wiser to prevent crime than
have to `close the barn door' after the crime's been committed.
I believe I have managed to cobble together a proven "device" that
prevents bike theft. Gone is the `Steal Me' sign on my bikes.
I also tested my device by leaving an unlocked moped in a rough,
downtown, eastside street for 20 minutes. My bike was also left
outside a grocery in a tough neighborhood where I watched `hoods'
looking intently at the electronics. They didn't touch the bike
probably because the "device" looked unfamiliar.
One benefit for me personally is the peace of mind that I know
exactly what is happening to the bike. I can hear what's going on.
One morning, a neighbor locked herself in the building basement
locker and hollered for help. My device `heard' her and I was able to
advise her, remotely, that I was on my way to help her open the
jammed door lock.
I haven't found anything similar to my device, for sale, on the
Internet yet. If you have one or more special bikes that you don't
want stolen, you'll want the plans for this device.
If you are looking for an "undefeated" remote pager system, look no
further. In my opinion, its better than a Kryptonite New York lock.
My DIY device is also better than a Compustar, Clifford Viper, Python
880XP, Armed Guard model 200P, Lynx 2000, Hornet 554T because these
products are only one-way; whereas, my DIY device is a "two-way"
voice communication device/alarm.
PAYMENT & SHIPPING INFORMATION: PayPal and Money Orders accepted.
Plan is emailed as TIF (graphic) file attachments upon receipt of
payment.
Hi, I've just joined this group in hopes of finding help in finding a
replacement fender for my bike. My family and I just moved to Guam
due to military orders and the movers broke off the back fender,
along with the light, of my bike. This bike was purchased in Belgium
about 7 years ago and it's made by Giant. It's a commuter bike,
upright, fenders with spashguards, has four speeds but no derailer
but instead has an enclosed system. I can't remember exactly what
the system is called. It has a generator on the front wheel that
generates electricity to both the front and back fenders/lights. The
fenders are plastic but have a metal coating on the inside that sends
the current to the lights. This is the type of bike that is used
extensively in The Netherlands by people commuting to work.
The bike does work without the end of the fender and I can use the
generator for the front light but if possible I'd like to replace the
back fender/light as it's nice to not have to worry about batteries
for a clip on light. I don't mind using an overseas source and am
not concerned with speed or cost. I'd just like to be able to keep
the bike in it's original condition as it's such a comfortable, fun
to ride bike.
If anyone has any ideas, sources or insight into this, please let me
know.
Thanks,
Dona
