Hi,

I dont have much experience with bikes and was looking at one. I
turned it upside down and spun the back wheel. There was a steady tick
tick tick sound(chain was stationary, I spun it backwards). The
salesman said the sound was good and that it meant the bearings were
running fine. The front wheel however was soundless.
Is it good/bad that the back wheel was making that noise?

Thanks

Hi there guys,

I am new to biking and have a few issues that you may be able to help
me with.

1. The biggest problem I have is with the seat, I get server pain
after only a few minutes riding. I have changed my seat several times
but still get a butt chafing and also feel like I am sitting on and
iron bar. I tried a really big seat with extra padding but the
inhibited my leg movement. I also tried a small seat but that hurt
worse.

I have not bought bicycling shorts as yet but cannot believe that
shorts would make that much difference. Is that correct?

2. The other issue is with my feet, I do have the correct position
for pedaling but I do get numbness in my feet, if I move my foot back
so the instep is on the pedal the numbness goes away but this limits
my range of movement for my stroke. Any thoughts?

3. I also get numbness in my hands from time to time. I know this
sounds like I have a lot of physical problems, but I am in good
health and pretty fit. I am sure it is just my riding position and or
equipment. As I wish to continue riding I need to iron out these
issues.

Any help any of you guys can give would be appreciated.

Thanks

John

Dear Colleague:

Progressive Engineer, the online magazine covering the mid-Atlantic and northeast regions of the U.S., has recently posted a feature story on Cannondale that might be of interest.  The bicycle manufacturer has developed fat-tube aluminum bike frames and flexible manufacturing techniques, allowing it to prosper making everything in the U.S.  Focusing on R&D, Cannondale has developed its own mountain bike suspension systems and other components, most of which had previously been dominated by overseas companies.

You can see this at http://www.ProgressiveEngineer.com.  Thank you.

Excellent article. The Cannondale is a very good bike.
I have ridden one many miles, with virtually no
mechanical problems, and it was used when I got it. My
budget could not afford a TREK or other high-end bike.
The Cannondale did a great job.

Hi,

I'm looking for a cross-usage bike. Today I looked at the Trek 7000
line. They were so heavy, but the rides were nice. I wish I could find
something that is as shock absorbing at the Trek 7000 line, but as
light-weight as some of the other ones I looked at. Does anyone have any
recommendations?

Thank you,

Hello All,
I am new to this group so please excuse me. I was wondering if anyone
has ever heard of Barracuda Brand Bikes? They are big here in the UK
I guess. I just purchased a 2001 Matrix model that is a Full alloy
framed Full suspension bike with mid range Shimano Components
(Alivio) 24 speed, 36 Spoke Alex rims with Quad Hubs. Quad QMD3 160mm
Front disc, Shimano rear V brake. Kenda Kinetic 2.1 tires, Chilli 530
adjustable preload 80mm travel front forks, DNM adjustable pre load
rear shock with 3.75" travel, and a few other things I can think of
right now. It seems like a good midrange bike with lots of room to
grow and upgrade. I was skeptical at first thinking it was just
another department store bike but as I got looking I started to
notice things such as the Cartridge bearing hubs, replacable drop
outs, threadless headset, sealed bottom bracket. Has anyone else
heard of this brand? I bought this bike to replace a clapped out 7
year old rigid frame GT. Maybe this brand is something to watch. Now
to start upgrading. :) Thanks everyone.

Hello, my name is Katrina Pollack and I work for a national nonprofit
organization called Earth Force which works to motivate middle school
youth to make a difference in their communities and in their natural
environment. Right now we are waging a national campaign to make
communities more bicycle-friendly. We are encouraging middle school
youth to participate in the Bike-A-Mile Challenge which is simply to
organize kids to ride their bikes to school! We hope that they will
learn how easy it is to travel around their community by bicycle and in
the process reduce pollution, save energy, prevent traffic congestion,
and promote youth leadership and environmental awareness. I was
wondering if anyone on this list serv could take a few minutes to give
any suggestions on how to make more kids and teachers aware of this
campaign. I would greatly appreciate your comments.

Thank you,
Katrina

Hi
I was wondering if someone could enlighten me on one small fact - why do Shimano stick 'Deore' on their LX and XT equipment? I would have thought that it would have been better off putting it on the range topping XTR stuff, but there you go. Also, what does it mean?

manufacturer. Seeing that you are an avid rider take a sec and check out

the market. we are also looking for dealers and agents to market the

I recently installed a new Sachs chain on my Trek road bike. It is a match of
the old chain and the chainwheel and sprockets are in good condition. The fit
seems right but I have insistent chain skip in the middle gears. When there is
more lateral tension, it goes away. I have tried all I know...finding sticky
links, bending the chain, moving the rivets, etc. I am using a parrafin coating
vs. a lube oil. Have not had a problem like this before. Any ideas?

Hello,

I just wanted to drop a line to let you all know about a couple of additions to  www.bicycles.org.

     -- Bicycle safety - www.bicycles.org/bikesafety

     -- Bike Shops WebRing - www.bicycles.org/webring

     -- And don't forget, our Bicycle Registration - www.bicycles.org/bikereg.htm

I am also working on a new CYCLING NEWS  page.  It should be up sometime during the weekend (unless I decide to race at Mt Snow VT).  If that's the case, look for it next week.

Let us know about your rides and races.  It's always cool to here about what's happening in other parts of the country.
