MY STORY:
I've been a bike/moped commuter for three years, parking my `cycles
downtown, and in our eastside apartment basement. Most people like me
lose one bike a year. I've owned four bikes costing $600-$1,200 each,
since 1999, and haven't lost one yet because of this Do-It-
Yourself "lock-alarm-intercom."
The last attempt on my bikes was at one 1:30am where thieves took a
tarp off, triggered the motion-sensor, continued on to remove
accessories. Apparently, they were not deterred from a 120dB alarm,
because they knew sound wouldn't travel far underground, in that
basement. However, they ran off when my voice from the bike
boomed, "Hey you down there! The police has been called! I'm coming
down right now! Yyou're gonna' be in trouble!" When I arrived in the
basement, the thieves had dropped everything. Nothing had been stolen
from my four bikes and two bike trailers loaded with nutri-bars and
spare tubes. These thieves thought they were prepared for everthing,
but didn't expect a `talking bike.' Now, this is high-tech protection!
With the poverty out there, drug-addiction, and cuts to welfare, it
is unfortunate that some have to resort to crime. However, my
military-man father taught me that it is wiser to prevent crime than
have to `close the barn door' after the crime's been committed.
I believe I have managed to cobble together a proven "device" that
prevents bike theft. Gone is the `Steal Me' sign on my bikes.
I also tested my device by leaving an unlocked moped in a rough,
downtown, eastside street for 20 minutes. My bike was also left
outside a grocery in a tough neighborhood where I watched `hoods'
looking intently at the electronics. They didn't touch the bike
probably because the "device" looked unfamiliar.
One benefit for me personally is the peace of mind that I know
exactly what is happening to the bike. I can hear what's going on.
One morning, a neighbor locked herself in the building basement
locker and hollered for help. My device `heard' her and I was able to
advise her, remotely, that I was on my way to help her open the
jammed door lock.
I haven't found anything similar to my device, for sale, on the
Internet yet. If you have one or more special bikes that you don't
want stolen, you'll want the plans for this device.
If you are looking for an "undefeated" remote pager system, look no
further. In my opinion, its better than a Kryptonite New York lock.
My DIY device is also better than a Compustar, Clifford Viper, Python
880XP, Armed Guard model 200P, Lynx 2000, Hornet 554T because these
products are only one-way; whereas, my DIY device is a "two-way"
voice communication device/alarm.
