Mike:
In the spirit of eschewing obfuscation, my guess is that Dave was looking for
something more specific than using a "bright" light on the front and "blinkies"
on the back.
Dave:
There are a lot of brands of high-quality lights out there. As the other
contributor wrote, this is one area where it's worth spending a little more.
I've had good luck with the Nightrider lights myself, using them for everything
from commuting in the early morning and evenings to 24-Hour mountain bike races,
and casual off-road night rides, but I only use them on the front. I definitely
recommend a light with a digital control; they last longer and seem to be more
reliable. For the back, I've found that the inexpensive battery-powered lights
work just as well, and are easier to use. I've been using a Vistalight Eclipse,
and really like it because it's bright, and more importantly, light weight; rear
lights almost always mount on the seatpost, and as a result tend to be subject
to a lot of abuse. The mounting brackets are susceptible to breaking if they
weigh much because of the force transferred when you go off a curb or hit a
bump. All the
rear lights I've ever seen blink.
Hope this helps,
-M
