Hi, can anyone verify the accuracy of these rifles in very cold
weather e.g. <-15 C. I am considering buying one that was returned
because of very poor cold weather performance. The rifles ship with a
cold temp test target, so I (optimistically) suspect that the barrel
was contaminated with too much oil or the wrong ammunition was used.
Any Ideas ?
thanks

I just moved to the northeastern corner of North Dakota and would
like to get started in the sport. Winnipeg is about an hour north,
but I really wanted to find a some locals to practice with. Anyone
have any suggestions or advise on where I could practice and get
instruction?

I wear contacts as well, and mine tend to float a bit which adds
some time and annoyance to the range...

I think most glasses won't fit with your cheek on the rest-something
to think about.

Hi All,

Anyone out there use prescription shooting/sun glasses for the
biathlon races. I currently use contacts but would like to stick to
just glasses. Any recommendations? Looking for something good for
running, skiing and shooting. (also for lots of other outdoor
activity).

Thanks, John

As I write this 1 Euro = 1.17826 US Dollars. Some people are
projecting the rate to be 1.20.

The bad news is the prices of ammo, rifles, skis, wax... imported
from the EU will be going up. If you can afford equipment, you may
want to purchase what you can now (i.e. products that were imported
before the exchange rate increased).

For some good news affecting all three left handed biathletes of this
group, Anschutz announced a Left Hand Nitride Steel Sprint Biathlon
Rifleon their web site. No prices were announced by importers.

Yep, Core sport can be reached via email at coresprt@... or
you can call them: Phone 888-830-2785.. ...Fax 218-682-2785.

Their website is a bit messy, but this link works for their cuffs:

Hi Folks,

in the Summer biathlon, why is it you don't carry the rifle while while
running?

I'm assuming it's the motion of running that makes the rifle bounce on your
back, something that doesn't happen when skiing.

Under the heading of making biathlon like events available to more people,
is there something like a "power walking" biathlon?

There are three inexpensive biathlon rifles I know of.

Anschutz 1451: Under $350 without sights and sling/harness. The stock is
something of a hybred between a sporter style and a target stock. It has a
two stage trigger with what feels like a five pound plull weight. I have one
for my daughter, works great.

Anschutz 64R: Under $650 without sights and sling/harness. The stock has a
very short pull, so you may need some spacers. That said it's a lot easier
to shoot a stock that's too short than too long. This rifle can also be had
in a left hand version. The trigger is a 1.5Kg two stage. On a lark I shot
this in a 120 shot three position match and scored 1096, not great, but not
bad either.

Besides sights and sling/harness, you will also need to purchase extra
magazines and a holder for these rilfes.

Anschutz Web site <http://jga.anschuetz-sport.com/english.php?index2.htm>

EAA Biathlon (Russian Izhmash Biathlon): $1,000 with sights, magazine and
holder. Also has an adjustable comb. I have no experience with this rifle. I
have been told that the IZH46M air pistol is a very sold performer, so maybe
they do have good build quality.

Hey Kelly,

Thanks for the heads-up. Two races in one weekend is great way to do
it...makes the drive more worth it. I've bookmarked the Saratoga
Club site. I see they're meeting next week, so as soon as I see the
summer calendar, I'll try and make plans.

Thanks!

Hi guys, allow me to chime in. I think definitely think there is an
increase in the interest in biathlon overall. Afterall look at the
forum in which we're discussing it now. There are more and more
events popping up all over the place. Including such Leftist anti-gun

I don't think it is or should be a "gun" issue. Biathlon is the most
popularly watched winter sport all over Europe. Their gun laws and
gun attitudes are far more conservative than I hope our ever are.
That being said, Good luck in your various races this summer. I just

While it might be a little longer drive you might want to check out
The Saratoga Biathlon Club. The nice thing about races at Saratoga is
that they run a Saturday and Sunday race. So you can do 2 races in
one weekend. Usually the second race is a little longer. THey als
orun a Mountain bike biathlon race every year.

Hey Ed,

I would like to add my thoughts on the popularity of biathlon, from
the view of an outsider. I have never skied, and never shoot. I am
road and trail runner, who enjoys various new challenges. A summer
vacation to Lake Placid has get me very interest in summer biathlon.
With the growth of extreme sports and the increase popularity in
trail running, I see a big opportunity for summer biathlon to grow.
Unfortunately I also see some problems.

That trip I was speaking - was last Sept!!! The only place I have
found a summer event is roughly 3 hours away. So to recap - I've
waited roughly 9 months and I'm going to have to drive 3 hours for a
5k ran. I don't see many people sticking with it under those
conditions. Tough to attach new particpates under those condtions.

On the postive side, I would place an emphases on the cross-country
and/or trail running aspect. I would also make the events a little
longer. I guess there are 8k events, but the one closeest to me is a
5k.

Also on a very positive note, all the event web sites I have reviewed
make it very clear that first times are welcome. They seem very open
to newcomers. That a big first step to get roads and trail runners
to try the sport.

I would envision a spectator friendly venue, with an established xc
course that has shooting range capabilities. On Tuesday night run xc
races. On Thrusday night have biathlon events. This way the venue
could serve multiple purpose.

One other thing on the gun factor. I dislike hunting and I often
disagree with the NRA political views. However, I picture biathlon
as a target shooting sport, not a "gun" sport. I believe mainstream
America sees a big difference between shooting a deer for "sport" and
target shooting.

Just by two cents. Looking forward to my first event in June, in
Vernon, NJ.

Biathlon more popular in the United States. The two most important
issues being inconsistent snowfall and anti-gun attitudes in the U.S.

As for the first issue: imagine Biathlon parks scattered across the
U.S. (including the South) with paved, lighted roller skiing lanes,
and lighted shooting range. The parks would be relatively close to
populated areas. The parks at latitudes that allow snow making in the
Winter would do so but only after placing snow mats over the pavement.

I have not been able to resolve the second issue. What will happen to
America's attitude toward guns after the war with Iran? It may get
worse, in the 1950's people tried to introduce Biathlon into the
Winter Olympics but anti-gun sentiment after WWII delayed it's
introduction until 1960.

Any other ideas out there? This is not a business proposition to
start Biathlon parks across the U.S. It is an attempt to kickstart
the acceptance of Biathlon in the U.S. and increase relations with
parts of Europe in the future. We (as a nation) excel at social
isolation and Biathlon could be used the reverse that trend.

I ordered an Izhmash through my local gun shop, he is not a dealer
for Izhmash but he has a supplier who can get them.

Thanks for the reminder, the last time I contacted Saratoga was
fourteen years ago. Where do you intend on purchasing you rifle? The
only dealer I know for Anschutz in CT is Blue Trails.

I live in SE Connecticut and I am interested in getting into
recreational biathlon. I am in the process of purchasing a rifle and

Thanks for you help/input guys. I"ll continue to save my pennies and
search around. Let me know if you hear of anyone unloading anything
left handed.

Cheers,

The model I ordered was using the part number from the Anschutz web site.

It has a 1.5Kg two stage trigger, no perceptible creep for the second stage.

Length of pull from butt to middle of trigger guard is 12.5"

I think that most stocks are way to long. It's so much easier to shoot a
stock that too short than too long. The length of this stock is fine for my
5'8" frame in standing, but my head does get a bit close to the sights in
prone.

The only reason I added the spacers is that I'm going to use this rifle for
3 position target shooting as well.

On nealjguns.com a Anschutz 64R Biathlon Rifle Left is being
advertised for under $700. I do not know too much about this model, I
believe it is a inexpensive trainer.

Finnbiathlon rifles had a straight pull action back in the days when
Anschutz Biathlon Rifles used the Match 64 Action. The Fortner action
may have been based on the Finnbiathlon rifle. The origional importer
of Finnbiathlon rifles was located in Bozeman, Montana (I believe).

Thanks for the tips Ed. Would be an awfully small club don't you
think.

What type of Action does the Finnbiathlon rifle have? I've not seen
one. Thanks

Finn Biathlon manufactured left handed biathlon rifles but are not
imported into this country any more. Place a add in the USBA
newsletter to find something that exotic.

I am left handed, so I know how you feel. No, my left handed Anschutz
is not for sale.

We should start a left handed Biathlon Club!

Kevin, I've been looking into these rifles. Can you tell me more
about it. Does it have a great trigger, etc.. Did you get a "youth"
version is that why its so short. Do you know the LOP (Length of pull
in inches)? Three inches of spacers does seem extreme.

I'm looking for a used left-handed biathlon rifle. Does anyone even
make one besides Anschutz (currently out of my price range)?

I'm new to Biathlon and new to this group so any help/info would be
greatly apprecaited.

I am a new member to this group. In the late 1980's I started
training for biathlon but did not get a chance to ski a lot due to
the snow droughts of 1988,89,90,91, &92.

Currently, I am interested in becoming a Biathlon Official as well as
recreational Biathlon.

I live in Connecticut and know of one other person interested in the
sport. Is anyone else interested in Biathlon in Southern New England
(including Southern Vermont & Southwestern New Hampshire)? Is anyone
interested in starting a club in this area?
