As I was watching some of the biathlon competitions recently televised on Fox
Sports, I
noticed some athletes rifles had some sort of ring around the barrel. I'm
assuming this is
some kind of weight? Would this be in place of the weight under the front sight
or in
addition to? Does this serve as any kind of performance aid or might it be there
just to get
a lighter rifle up to the minimum required weight?
