Hi Ron,
USBA has gone through some growing pains, change of leadership, move of
headquarters, etc. I am happy to say they are doing a much better job of
reaching out to the club level programs, while continuing the necessary business
of developing the top end athletes. Like any under-funded organization, it is
tough to do all and be all. While I have heard some of the same stuff you have,
I think it is no longer the case, which is great. I'm not sure if USBA is
directly behind the organization of the club championships, but it doesn't
really matter. There are a finite number of people involved in the sport and
everyone who is jazzed about it pitches in and does something. Washington
State's program has grown dramatically over the last few years as a result of
just that kind of attitude. Basically, we all just want to race and do
biathlon. It would be great if you got involved in your area, helping with
events and organization. It is a great way to learn about the sport and you
will meet a ton of really great people.
I hope you are able to get out and do some local or regional races this
winter. Keep us all posted on your progress!

more fun to know where people are, eh?)

This really sounds great. Is this an "official" USBA championship, or
something devised by
the club? I am new to biathlon, but have heard a number of negative comments
about the
USBA and their attitude towards club and non-national caliber athletes. This
seems like it
would be a great place to start rebuilding the grassroots club system.
