(Times are Eastern Time, I believe)
2/9/2006 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm Oestersund, SWE: Women’s 10km Pursuit
The biathlon world cup season begins in northern Sweden with the women’s 10km
pursuit. Veteran Uschi Disl once again starts the season in top form and it is
now up to the rest of the field to chase. With Torino looming large on the
horizon, the women test their early season form, head-to-head in Sweden.
2/16/2006 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm Oestersund, SWE: Men’s 12.5km Pursuit
The men take the stage as biathlon world cup action continues in northern Sweden
with the men’s 12.5km Pursuit. Norway is on top again, but it’s not Ole Einar
Bjoerndalen. Stian Eckhoff topped everyone in the opening 10km sprint. He will
be chased today by the flying Frenchman, Raphael Poiree and Bjoerndalen lurks 30
seconds back in 4th position. It’s going to be a big battle. Four shooting
stages, 12.5km of head-to-head skiing, first to the line is the winner!
2/23/2006 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm Hochfilzen, AUT: Women’s 7.5km Sprint
Week three of the biathlon world cup stops just down the road from Kitzbuehl, in
Hochfilzen, Austria, for the women’s 7.5km sprint. It takes fast skiing to
succeed in the sprint, and everyone will be taking chances to shoot clean and
fast. In the first weeks of competition, Germany and Russia have dominated, with
veteran, Uschi Turbo Disl lighting up the tracks, but she’ll need accuracy on
the shooting range to take top honors. Lung-burning high altitude, steep, long
climbs, and tricky descents make Hochfilzen one of the toughest places to win.
3/2/2006 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm Oberhof, GER: Men’s 15km Mass Start
World Cup stop #4 takes you to the biathlon mecca of Germany—Oberhof. Tune in
with the tens of thousands on hand as the top 30 men in the world rankings take
the start toe-toe, with the bang of a gun getting things underway. It’s
head-to-head, topsy-turvy action on the trails, with pressure-cooker shooting
stages. The roar of the crowd lets you know it’s Oberhof. The tight competition
tells you it’s the mass start!
3/9/2006 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm Ruhpolding, GER: Men’s 12.5km Pursuit
Weisswurst, Weiss Beer, and Biathlon—Bavarian favorites to the core, as the
biathlon world cup takes you to Ruhpolding, GER, and the Men’s 12.5km pursuit.
Ruhpoling is one of the oldest and most beloved centers for biathlon in the
world. Tucked away in a pocket of the German alps, this little spa town comes
alive every January as biathlon’s elite do battle. Today, it’s the men’s 12.5km
pursuit. Norway’s Frode Andresen has found his top form from three years ago and
leads the charge, but he’s being chased by the Flying Frenchman, Raphael Poiree,
and the new young German sensation, Michael Roesch.
3/15/2006 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm Antholz, ITA: Men’s 12.5km Pursuit
As the world prepares its focus on Torino, the best biathletes in the world will
sharpen up for the big show in another Italian village—Antholz. High altitude
burns the lungs and tests the athletes’ mettle on the shooting range. Norway’s
Frode Andresen is again in the driver’s seat but it remains to be seen if he can
hold his steady on the shooting range to win the pursuit. Germany’s Ricco Gross
started the season slowly, but is not breathing down the back of Andresen. The
Men’s 12.5km is one of the final preparation races before the big days ahead in
Torino.
