As most of you know, I take pictures. We have Tour De Lincoln Saturday and I would like to get a group photo. I can't get a hold of Karen Wright by email so I don't know when the sign in is; however, most of us seem to be ready to ride between 7 and 8. Can we meet up and get a group photo at 7:30 AM. If some of you plan on leaving at 7 AM, please let me know and maybe we can change the time to 7. I also want to get photos of us starting the ride together.
For those that are doing The Wine Country and John Findley ride please take some pictures for the club.
Olympic medalist/Tour de France podium finisher/Team CSC member, Bobby Julich, will be doing video Question/Answer format with www.athleteinyou.com during the Tour de France beginning in July/07. Membership fees are $25/annually to participate. Please forward to your club members that may be interested in participating. We will have a special forum section created where members can begin posting questions for Bobby J that relate to the Tour right now.
All the while T--- Tim will be singing "Tiptoe Thru the Tulips."

I've told this story many times, but I bought my first
pair of cycling shorts at The Rest Stop, from Larry!
I returned to the store after Greg bought it and
introduced myself as a Bike Hiker. I talked to Greg
about speaking at one of our club meetings. He wasn't
the least bit enthused or interested. I felt that way
everytime I shopped there and after awhile, I quit
going (unless I needed another mirror). The Rest Stop
as we all knew it, became extinct when Larry and
Yvonne sold it.

I agree. I think one of the reason's I fell in love with cycling to begin with was the feeling I got from members of the cycling community. Larry and Yvonne always seemed to be ahead of that group.

I think he lost return customers due to his alienation of clubs like the bike hikers and wheelman. I know when I'd go there in the past for club items I'd buy store items as well. Maybe the lack of club members coming in cost him some money. On top of that the whole idea of removing the club items was to free up space for merchandise. Merchandise that now had fewer people walking into the store to see. This on top of other poor decisions (in my opinion) most likely contributed to this situation. It's a shame if you ask me. If I had the money I'd buy the rights to the store and continue it. However, I'd put a full maintenance area in the shop as money from labor is just produced from sweat. Not product less overhead.

I'm curious as to the feelings and thoughts of this entire membership as to WHY.
Why is The Rest Stop going out of business??
Yes, change in ownership and management would come into this discussion. Was it because a lack of support of the shop to carry both Wheelpeople and BikeHikers gear? Did that piss off the "membership" at large?
Did the departure of Larry & Yvonne, et. al. contribute? Many employees stayed on, you know. I count those folks as fellow cyclists, brothers-in-arms, as it were. I trust in their expertise to advise me (or dissuade me) to a purchase.
Was it the changing
landscape of bicycling today? Other shops opening, offering "better" deals? Slicker marketing? Bike repair as a service?
Or was it spite that drove members and others to avoid The Rest Stop? Did Greg have anything to do with that decision? This guy put his career, his financial status and future on the line to step into Larry's shoes. Mighty big, and intimidating, I'd be the first to admit.
Folks, I'm not looking for anything but serious intro- and retro-spective into this issue. A Bike Shop is closing, going out of business, which affects us ALL. And I live in Stockton, for Peet's sake (sorry, again couldn't resist the easy plug). And I travel to The Rest Stop to purchase most, but not ALL, of my bicycle products.
So why is The Rest Stop is going out of business?
Please, let's open a discussion, without getting nasty, into why this shop is
closing. An open dialogue can benefit us all.

I agree with the above. I did give the Rest Stop a couple of trys after Larry and Yvonne sold it but I wasn't impressed with Greg. I wasn't treated very well which left a sour taste in my mouth. When he kicked the Bike Hiker and Wheelmen gear out of his store I decided not to set foot in there again. I'm sure many others decided the same. Not nice to kick 1000-1500 customer base bye bye. Larry and Yvonne did a lot for the cycling community and cyclists at large when they had the store. If Greg had continued that to some degree he might not be closing the store now.
I do not agree with Tim that buying the store now would be a good idea. The time to have bought it was when Larry and Yvonne was selling it. Now that the customer base has dwindled and the reputation tarnished it would be better to start fresh.
IMHO, Larry & Yvonne were The Rest Stop. Greg didn't do anything to integrate himself into the cycling community like they did. Plus the 'hip' places to go now are the Bicycle Kitchen and the Bicycle Chef. And the club clothing is available at the Bicycle Chef.

No, that's the answer you get from someone who feels safe enough with who they are to express themselves freely.
I can see this group as being more of a community forum where we can ask off topic questions. Ask for opinions without fear of being cut off by the moderators etc... I'm not saying the moderators overstepped their boundaries as they didn't they had a job and they did it the best they could at the time.
With that being said though, I think the fact that this is a looser e-group will help use to learn more about fellow club members. I realize this club is about cycling but something that is ingrained in our sport is the social aspect. This group will be great to further foster that.
