Subject: [bhforum] Davis Double advice, words of wisdom yatta yatta yatta

With the Davis Double coming up this weekend I thought I'd give some thoughts on this ride.  I hope some of you find the information useful.  I know I wish I had a mentor when I first doing doubles.  As a result I feel sort of obliged to offer thoughts and encouragement based on my 17 years of riding this particular event.

The ride is 200 miles long.  Don't forget this.  If you go balls out from the get go you won't be going balls out at the end.  This is certified fact.  Trust me here, it took me 3 years before I realized this but I'm both stubborn and a slow learner.

The early morning pace lines are a blast but beware of those being towed by three or four tandems.  They will travel in excess of 25 mph and you will get tired even in that group.

There are tons of rest stops on this event.  I believe about 12 or so.  You do not need to stop at all of them.  If you plan on skipping stops I'd recommend the first one if you can.  It always has the longest lines for the bathrooms etc.  You can use the Markley Cove's store restroom depending on the time.  It's just after climbing up the dam near Berryessa and before Cardiac.

The climbs on the course are in this order.  The climb to the Dam, Cardiac, Gold Hill, Cobb Mt and Resurrection.  All are pretty shaded with one exception, Resurrection.  This climb is not tough but since it will be over 90 degrees this Saturday and you will get there with 100 miles on your legs and most of the climbing behind you, you will not like it.  Also, take note that the climb comes after lunch.  If you over eat, then head out up this grade in the heat your stomach will not like you.

Overall this is the best supported double in the state.  No other double compares.  It is also very doable course for the beginner and a great course for seasoned double riders.  I wish all the riders this Saturday the best of luck.

Tim
