Forgive the error on my part. The 17th would just miss Bike to Work
Week. The actual date of the class is Saturday, May 10th!!
Just in time for Bike to Work Week!
Save time, save money, keep fit, and have fun! Ride your bicycle to work!
How do I equip the bike? How do I keep my bike safe at work? What do
I wear? How do I deal with sweat & helmet hair? What if I need to
wear nice clothes at work? What if I live too far? Learn the
answers to these and more at the bicycle commuting class.
This is a one-time three-hour course. Start time is 6:30 PM.
Road I is a prerequisite to this class.
This class will include a after dark ride, so all bikes must be
equipped with a headlight (does not need to be fancy) and a rear
reflector. Helmets are also required.
If you're interested please fill it out attached registration form
and return it to me or bring it with you to class. If you are going
to bring it to class please email me to let me know your intention to
attend. The mailing address (and the class meeting place) is:

The next Advanced Bike for Life (Road II) Course will be starting on
Saturday, April 12th. The course will run 4 consecutive Saturdays,
April 12th, 19th, 26th and May 3rd from 9:00am to noon. Just in time
for the May 16th Bike to Work Day! The classes are held in the
Clairemont area of San Diego (Just west of I-805 & Clairemont Mesa
Blvd.). Each class size will be limited to no more than 10
students. If you have been wanting to take Road II now is the time!
- What will you learn in Road II?
Road II will allow you to further practice and enhance the road
riding skills you learned in Road I. We'll review the basics and
augment your knowledge by further discussion in the class and
on-the-road practice of more challenging situations.
Road II will also increase your knowledge about basic bike
maintenance. You'll learn how to adjust your derailers and brakes
for smooth shifting and effective braking; how to replace brake pads,
brake & shifting cables and cable housings; how to clean drivetrain
components and assess their condition; and how to rebuild & adjust
all those pesky bearings.
In addition, we will cover many other assorted aspects of bicycling
that can lead to safer, more efficient and more enjoyable
cycling. Sessions include both classroom discussion and on-bike practice.
Successful completion of Road I is a requirement for taking this course.
- How much is this going to cost?
It's FREE! Normally Road II is $60, but due to a grant to the City
of San Diego, the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC) is
offering free classes. So take advantage of it now!

Bike for Life (Road I) Class Starting Saturday, March 8th
There will be a 4-week Bike for Life (Road I) class on starting next
Saturday, March 8th. Road I is normally 3 weeks, but I'm including
the extra week to allow time to better cover some areas that usually
receive less attention than deserved.
This Road I class will also be directly followed by the advanced
(Road II) class. So if you would like to get the entire course (Road
I & II) in a continuous flow, here's your chance! If you're not able
to take Road II now, no problem, just sign up for Road I. Your Road
I certificate of completion is your ticket into any future Road II course.
Here's the answers to some Frequently Asked Questions:
- What will I learn in the Road I Bike for Life class?
Road I will concentrate on how to operate a bicycle legally and
safely on the streets. You will learn how to shift a multi-speed
bicycle properly and effectively, how to perform a bicycle safety
check and how to fix a flat tire. You will also learn emergency
bicycle handling skills and crash avoidance techniques. But mostly,
you will learn the techniques of riding on city streets in a proper,
safe manner, without being "scared to death" by traffic. Sessions
include both classroom discussion and on-bike practice.
- Whose crazy idea was this course anyway?
The program curriculum was developed by the League of American
Bicyclists (LAB), the oldest nationwide organization promoting
bicycling and bicyclist's rights. The League was founded in 1880 as
the League of American Wheelmen. Further information on LAB can be
found at <www.bikeleague.org>. All instructors undergo special
training and are certified through LAB as a League Cycling Instructor (LCI).
- Who should take this course?
Anyone who already knows how to ride a bicycle, but is interested in
how to operate a bicycle legally and safely on the streets without
being constantly "scared to death".
- But I already know how to ride a bicycle!
Simply knowing how to ride a bike is not the same as knowing how to
operate a bike safely and legally. You will emerge from this class a
better, skilled rider by learning the proper techniques to avoid
dangerous situations before they develop.
- What if I don't think I need the first part and just want the second?
Sorry, Road I is a prerequisite to taking Road II, no exceptions. So
if you are interested in Road II sign up now for Road I.
- How much is this going to cost?
It's FREE! Normally the first section (Road I) is $50 and the second
section (Road II) $60 ($110 for the complete course), but due to a
grant to the City of San Diego, the San Diego County Bicycle
Coalition (SDCBC) is offering these classes free. So take advantage of it now!
- Interested?
Meeting dates are Saturdays, March 8th, 15th, & 29th (no class Easter
weekend), and April 5th. Each class is 3 hours, from 9:00am to
noon. They are held in the Clairemont area of San Diego (Just west
of I-805 & Clairemont Mesa Blvd.). Class size is limited to no more
than 10 people so sign up early.

A note to all my former and prospective Bike for Life students.
I wanted to let you know I will be starting a 4-week Bike for Life
class on June 2nd. The extra week will allow more road time and to
better cover some areas that usually receive less attention than
deserved. In addition, this class will be directly followed by the
advanced (Road II) class starting June 30th. So if you would like to
get the entire course (Road I & II) in a continuous flow, here's your chance!
If you have already had Road I and want to take Road II, no
problem. Sign up for the Road II course only. I you cannot commit
to an 8-week schedule, or for some reason you do not wish to take
Road II, also no problem. Just sign up for Road I. Your Road I
certificate of completion is your ticket into any future Road II course.

there are. I want you to know when they are being held so you can

A note to all my former and prospective Bike for Life (Street Smarts) students.
There's a special Bike for Life class starting next week, August
12th. It's special in that I will be combining all the materials from both
the usual first & second classes into a single 7 week class. This should
allow smoother coverage of the material, and allow you, the student, more
time to absorb the material.
- What will I learn in the Bike for Life class?
The first section (Road I) will concentrate on how to operate a bicycle
legally and safely on the streets. You will learn how to shift a
multi-speed bicycle properly and effectively, how to perform a bicycle
safety check and how to fix a flat tire. You will also learn emergency
bicycle handling skills and crash avoidance techniques.
The second section (Road II) will allow you to further practice your road
riding skills. We'll review the basics and augment your knowledge by
further discussion in the class and practice on the streets.
The second part will also increase your knowledge about basic bike
maintenance. You'll learn how to recognize worn drivetrain parts and
maladjusted, worn or dirty bearings, how change brake pads, brake and
shifter cables and other components as well as adjusting shifting and
braking systems.
In addition, we will cover many other assorted aspects of bicycling that
can lead to safer, more efficient and more enjoyable cycling. Both
sections include both classroom discussion and on-bike practice.
- Who had the crazy idea for this course?
The program curriculum was developed by the League of American Bicyclists
(LAB), the oldest nationwide organization promoting bicycling and
bicyclist's rights. The League was founded in 1880 as the League of
American Wheelmen. Further information on LAB can be found at

certified through LAB as a League Cycling Instructor (LCI).
- Who should take this course?
Anyone who knows how to ride a bicycle, but is interested in how to operate
a bicycle legally and safely on the streets without being constantly
"scared to death". You can even benefit from this course if you "already
know how to ride a bicycle" by learning the proper techniques to avoid
dangerous situations before they develop.
All classes are held Saturdays from 9:00am to noon. There will be seven
meetings, from August 12th through September30th. The first section will
be August 12th, 19th & 26th. We will then take the Labor Day weekend off
and begin the second session September 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th. They are
held in the Clairemont area of San Diego (Just west of I-805 & Clairemont
Mesa Blvd., directions at the end of this email). Class size will be
limited to no more than 10 people.
- How much does this cost?
It's FREE! Normally the first section is $50 and the second section $60
($110 for the complete course), but last year, due to a grant to the City
of San Diego, the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC) started
offering free classes. The city is no longer footing the bill, but SDCBC
feels that cyclist instruction is so important that we are continuing to
offer free classes; at least as long as we can afford to. So take
advantage of it now!

Attached to this email are two registration forms in PDF file format. One

place. The mailing address (and the class meeting place) is:

- What if I don't have time to take all 7 weeks?
For students that want to attend, but cannot do the entire seven weeks, we
will have an extra class (time to be worked out with the students) that
will allow those students to complete the first section and earn their Road
I certificate. This certificate will allow them to complete the second
section sometime in the future.
- What if I have already had the first part?
Students that have previously completed the Road I section, either through
me or any other LAB certified instructor, may join the class, room
permitting, at the beginning of the second section (on September
9th). With special permission of the instructor, these students may also
"drop-in" to parts of first section for review. This will be a
"space-permitting" arrangement, students signing up for the complete course
have first priority. If there is enough demand we can always hold another
Road II class.
- What if I don't think I need the first part and just want the second?
Sorry, but having the first part (Road I) is a prerequisite to taking the
second part. No exceptions.
If you have any questions about the Bike for Life course content, or are
wondering if you could benefit from the course, please feel free to contact
me by email or telephone.

Hi Sharon,
It's great to hear from you. It sounds like you've been having a lot of
troubles! I hope you are doing better. just take it easy and don't overdo
it.
BTW, Peggy is starting to ride again. It will take her a while to build
back up to her previous levels though. She actually took the initial and
advanced riding classes from me. She already knew quite a bit just from
association, but she tells me that she learned a lot anyway. Now at least
she knows what I'm doing out there all those Saturday's. :-)

station for electrical impulses) and pacemaker put in during January
intersession...I felt a whole lot better after that! But I still need
to get some sleep and start exercising again in June once I have some
time away from the frenetic, unpredictable pace of life at a
university...you wouldn't think it would be that way, would you? But
it is...
Hope you are well...and that Peggy gets back into riding too.

Fellow San Diego Area Bike Friday Riders.....
It's May, and if you remember my message the first part of the year I
should be through with my instructor duties (I have been teaching advanced
bicycling through the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC) "Bike for
Life" program). Well, the City extended the program through August, so I'm
not off the hook yet!
We still could use some volunteers to lead Bike Friday rides, because my
Saturdays are going to be tied up through August.
The good news is if you haven't been able to take advantage of this City of
San Diego sponsored training there's still time.
Some background for the unknowing and the forgetful---The San Diego County
Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC) has won a $30,000 contract with the City of San
Diego to provide bicycle safety training. The funds were provided through
a the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) grant. As a result
SDCBC is greatly expanding their bicycling training program with a variety
of programs. One of those programs is a continuing series of "Bike for
Life" or "Street Skills" cycling courses be presented by---- yours truly.
You are all invited to take advantage of these SDCBC programs! And it's free!
The next Bike for Life course starts May 7th. It will be held on three
consecutive Saturdays, May 7thth, 14nd and 21st. The classes in June are
the 11th, 18th, and 25th. July and August dates are not finalized
yet. The classes are 9:00 am - noon and will be held in the Clairemont
area of San Diego (Just west of I-805 & Clairemont Mesa Blvd.). Class size
will be limited to no more than 10 people. As those of you who may have
seen my class notices before know, the fee for the nine-hours of
instruction is usually $50, but thanks to the SANDAG grant, it's FREE! If
you ever considered taking the class this is a great time to do it!
What will you learn in Bike for Life? How to operate a bicycle legally and
safely on the streets without being constantly "scared to death". How to
shift a multi-speed bicycle properly and effectively, how to perform a
bicycle safety check and how to fix a flat tire. You will also learn
emergency bicycle handling skills and crash avoidance techniques. The

Fellow San Diego Area Bike Friday Riders.....
Happy Soggy New Year!
If we are going to have rides the first part of 2005 I am going to need
some help because I am going to be tied up. As many of you know I am a
member of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC) and also am a
League of American Bicyclists (LAB) certified cycling instructor. Well
these two things have ganged up on me.
The bicycle coalition has won a $30,000 contract with the City of San Diego
to provide bicycle safety training. The funds were provided through a the
San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) grant. As a result SDCBC is
greatly expanding their bicycling training program with a variety of
programs. One of those programs is a continuing series of "Bike for Life"
or "Street Skills" cycling courses be presented by..... yours
truly. Teaching these classes is going to be a full-time weekend job and
will prevent me from leading any Bike Friday Rides until at least May or June.
Now before you despair there is some good news. You are all invited to
take advantage of these SDCBC programs! And it's free!
My first Bike for Life course is starting January 15th. It will be held on
three consecutive Saturdays, January 15th, 22nd and 29th. The classes are
9:00 am - noon and will be held in the Clairemont area of San Diego (Just
west of I-805 & Clairemont Mesa Blvd.). Class size will be limited to no
more than 10 people. As those of you who may have seen my class notices
before know, the fee for the nine-hours of instruction is usually $50, but
thanks to the SANDAG grant, it's FREE! If you ever considered taking the
class this is a great time to do it!
If you can't make the January class, we're doing it again in
February! And, although not yet scheduled, we are also planning classes
for March and April, although one of those classes may be an "Advanced
Street Skills" class that the "Bike for Life" class is a prerequisite for.
The
class includes both classroom discussion and on-bike practice. You can
even benefit from this course if you "already know how to ride a bicycle"
by learning proper techniques to avoid dangerous situations before they
develop.

It's fall, and all the tourists have gone home! Let's reclaim Mission Bay
with a ride around it this Saturday, October 9th.
This is the quarterly ride for those of you that may be timid (or out of
shape). It is approximately 15 miles, flat and slow paced. Mission Bay
is a great ride with lots of sights, pleasant atmosphere and most of the
ride on multi-use paths (very little traffic).
If you know of someone who is interested in Bike Fridays but may be
intimidated by some of our other rides, invite them to come to this
one. And for all you regulars, come on out and enjoy an easy ride and the
company of fellow Bike Friday aficionados.
No Bike Friday? All you need is an interest! You don't need a Bike Friday
to ride, any kind of bike is welcome.
We will meet at Mission Bay Park in the parking lot directly North of the
Tourist Information Center (enter Mission Bay Park from Clairemont Drive
and turn right, then left into the parking lot.). Plan to depart at 9:00 a.m.
BTW, sorry about the late notice, but my weekend was up in the air until today.

Now that the last of the tourists have left and we have our beaches back,
by popular demand we will be doing the Coastal/Beach Loop for for September.
We'll be riding north to UCSD then down into Sorrento Valley and along the
Sorrento Creek slough preserve. Then out to the coast and south through
Torrey Pines Park (Bring your low gears!). We'll continue on south through
the scenic coast hugging neighborhoods of La Jolla and Pacific Beach before
returning to our starting point. We can get lunch along the way if the
group wants to. Great scenery and cool ocean breezes. 30 - 35
miles. It's one of my favorite rides. Plan to be there.
No Bike Friday? All you need is a Bike Friday interest! Any kind of bike
is welcome.

I got a kick out of your letter. We have a 20 year old daughter who
still thinks she'd the center of the milky way.
Who ever gave her THAT idea?
Yes, we (now my husband more than me) try to schedule a bike Friday ride
the 2nd Saturday of the month, sometimes the lst Saturday. He
is trying to be faithful to it and if he can't, he asks for
volunteers. This Saturday would have been a good easy ride, some
are more miles, but always fun I hear. I tend to go on the
under 16 mile ones.
Please give me your regular email and we'll put you on the regular
list. We welcome you and your daughter too, if you can get her to
come. I'm laughting at your email. Once my
husband went to pick up our daughter when she was about 17 on the tandum
and she tried to disguise herself incase her friends saw her. OMG
soooo embarrassing. Another time they had to walk home because she
wasn't going to be caught on a bicycle. And I though I
raised her as a tomboy. dang.
See you next time. Send me your email. And again,
welcome.

Rich,
Sorry about your conflict, but be prepared to deal with it a couple of
years more. My daughter just turned 20 and still has the same
attitude! :-) I do see some improvement lately (since she move out
on her own). My daughter has the same attitude about riding a
bicycle too, although she did mention just recently that she intends to
collect her bike one of these days.
Anyway, yes our rides are normally scheduled for the second Saturday of
the month. Also, the ride at the beginning of each quarter (Jan,
April, July & Oct.) are easy rides (normally around Mission Bay) to
encourage beginners to come out. The other months may contain
longer/hillier rides for those Bike Friday owners that want more of a
challenge.
And lastly, we don't care if your Bike Friday is new or used, or even if
you don't own one yet! As long as you are interested in Bike
Fridays you are welcome to join us. Come on out when you get the
chance. I try to post ride notices about 10 days before the event,
but as you can see this month, I don't always succeed! :-)

Greetings fellow San Diego Bike Friday enthusiasts!
The June ride is coming up June 12th, but I am not going to be able to lead
the ride since I will be teaching a "Street Smarts" bicycling class that
Saturday (See below). If any one of you would like to lead a ride here is
your chance. Let me know if you would be willing to read the June
ride. If no one can do it, the June ride will have to be canceled.
Now for a public service (or commercial) announcement.
As some of you may already know I am a League of American Bicyclists (LAB)
certified cycling instructor. I will be holding the LAB developed "Street
Skills" (Road I) cycling course this June. It will be held on three
consecutive Saturdays, June 5, 12 and 19th. The classes are 9:00 am - noon
and will be held in the Clairemont area of San Diego (Just west of I-805 &
Clairemont Mesa Blvd.). If you, or someone you know, is interested in
learning how to operate a bicycle legally and safely on the streets
(without being constantly "scared to death"), and learn more about your
bicycle this is the course for you. You can even benefit from this course
if you "already know how to ride a bicycle" by learning proper techniques
to avoid dangerous situations before they develop.
Class size will be limited to no more than 10 people. The fee for the
class is $50.
If you have any questions about the course content, or are wondering if you

This is the "Street Skills" (Road I) course description from the LAB website:
This basic 9 hour course is perfect as a primer for those cyclists who wish
to gain a full understanding of how to safely operate a bicycle in a
variety of situations. The 9 hour class includes learning how to perform a
bicycle safety check, fixing a flat, interactive discussion, on-bike skills
practice and student manual. Students will gain confidence knowing that
they are riding legally and safely. Crash avoidance techniques and crash
types will be discussed. Recommended for adults and children above 14.

Let's celebrate the newest link in the Bayshore Bikeway by taking a ride
around San Diego Bay! This link is the opening of the new bicycle bridge
over the Sweetwater River The opening ceremonies for the bridge were
April 17th and yours truly was there to check it out. This bridge
eliminates one of the worst sections of the San Diego Bay ride. No longer
do we have to cut inland and ride on Chula Vista's notorious
Broadway. Instead we can now amble along Tidelands Avenue to Pepper Park,
cross the river just west of the I-5 Freeway, and continue south on quiet
Bay Boulevard after crossing the river.
The views are great, the scenery varied and, if you don't like hills, the
path is flat. Total mileage is about 30 easy miles. Much, but not all,
will be on multi-use paths (MUP), Class 1 bike paths or quiet
streets. With great views of San Diego Bay, multiple wildlife preserves,
the Western Salt plant, a ride on one of the longest continuous Bike Paths
in San Diego and a scenic ferry ride across San Diego Bay to finish it off
it's easy to see why this is one of my favorite rides. I'm sure it will
become one of yours too.
The ride will start at the Harbor Island Park, on Harbor Island. To get to
Harbor Island, head towards the San Diego International Airport (Lindbergh
Field). When you reach Harbor Drive take it to Harbor Island (across from
the airport). Go onto Harbor Island then go west (right) at the island "T"
onto Harbor Island Drive. When you reach the end (Tom Ham's Lighthouse
Restaurant) turn around, then turn into the first right (the park) as you
head back east. Bring money and ID for the ferry ride (~ $2 each & $0.50
for the bike). Plan to depart at 9:00 a.m. Rain cancels.

This will be an easy ride around Mission Bay, just the thing after the
holidays inactivity. If you know of someone (or you) who is
interested in Bike Fridays but may be intimidated by some of our other
rides, invite them to come to this ride! It is approximately 15
miles, flat and slow paced. Mission Bay is a great ride with lots of
sights and pleasant atmosphere with most of the ride on multi-use paths.
So all you people interested in Bike Fridays come on out. You don't
need a Bike Friday to ride, any kind of bike is welcome.
And for all you regulars, come on out and enjoy an easy ride and the
company of fellow Bike Friday aficionados.
We will meet at Mission Bay Park in the parking lot directly North of
the Tourist Information Center (enter Mission Bay Park from Clairemont
Drive and turn right, then left into the parking lot.). The ride
starts at 9:00 am.
While I have your attention ....
I need help with rides. If you have ride suggestions, l want to hear
them. If anyone is interested in leading a ride, I would appreciate
the break. Let me know what you want to do as a Bike Friday group and
we will see if we can accommodate it.
Call or email me.
