Let's celebrate the newest link in the Bayshore Bikeway by taking a ride
around San Diego Bay! This link is the opening of the new bicycle bridge
over the Sweetwater River The opening ceremonies for the bridge were
April 17th and yours truly was there to check it out. This bridge
eliminates one of the worst sections of the San Diego Bay ride. No longer
do we have to cut inland and ride on Chula Vista's notorious
Broadway. Instead we can now amble along Tidelands Avenue to Pepper Park,
cross the river just west of the I-5 Freeway, and continue south on quiet
Bay Boulevard after crossing the river.
The views are great, the scenery varied and, if you don't like hills, the
path is flat. Total mileage is about 30 easy miles. Much, but not all,
will be on multi-use paths (MUP), Class 1 bike paths or quiet
streets. With great views of San Diego Bay, multiple wildlife preserves,
the Western Salt plant, a ride on one of the longest continuous Bike Paths
in San Diego and a scenic ferry ride across San Diego Bay to finish it off
it's easy to see why this is one of my favorite rides. I'm sure it will
become one of yours too.
The ride will start at the Harbor Island Park, on Harbor Island. To get to
Harbor Island, head towards the San Diego International Airport (Lindbergh
Field). When you reach Harbor Drive take it to Harbor Island (across from
the airport). Go onto Harbor Island then go west (right) at the island "T"
onto Harbor Island Drive. When you reach the end (Tom Ham's Lighthouse
Restaurant) turn around, then turn into the first right (the park) as you
head back east. Bring money and ID for the ferry ride (~ $2 each & $0.50
for the bike). Plan to depart at 9:00 a.m. Rain cancels.
No Bike Friday? All you need is an interest! You don't need a Bike Friday
to ride, any kind of bike is welcome.
